runnergirl - 2009-09-16 8:18 AM More like low 70's for the river temp.  I do think the one time I swam it was probably high 60's- that time it had rained the night before and I think they let some COLD water out from the dam.  But that was the only time I swam where I noticed it was REALLY COLD.

I wear a sleeveless when I swim in the river and at first it feels really cold.  But then I'm pretty comfrtable once I get started and I'm fine.  My only problem is when I get out the water and take off my wetsuit- I get goose bumps and get hungry and cold.  But then once I get biking and warmed up I'm ok.

Okay. Doesn't sound too bad. I have a long-sleeved wet suit. Maybe that's why I don't get quite so hungry?

I just saw a segment on NBC Augusta and the Savannah River Keeper has been testing the river water the past couple of weeks and they found a sewer leak.  Good news is they have chlorinated the area and all is supposed to be good for no ecoli in the water. http://www.nbcaugusta.com/news/topstories/59546792.html

7:00 AM works for me.

Andrew, I'm going to ride 2 1/2 hours Saturday after the swim and would like to get another swim in Sunday as well.  If you want we can meet and swim up river and back down Sunday.

Pencil me in for the swim and ride. My workout that day is a 40 minute swim and a 90 minute ride, so a swim up river and down would fit in. Trouble is that I woke up with a head cold yesterday, so if it is still with me Saturday morning, I will skip it and may be there Sunday.
Anyway, meeting at the Boathouse, right?Pencil me in for the swim and ride. My workout that day is a 40 minute swim and a 90 minute ride, so a swim up river and down would fit in. Hopefully the weather holds out on us.  I feel like I am fighting off a cold myself and it sucks being this clsoe to the race.  I asked an employee to please go home because he was sick and I didn't want it but it looks like he may have passed it on to me anyways.

Oh no- I hope you aren't getting sick.  Hit the home remedies hard- green tea, lots of sleep, drink a lot of water, and do some sinus flushes- that combo always seems to help me and decrease the duration of it.  Luckily I caught a cold a few weeks ago so I'm hoping that means I'm exempt for awhile

always seems to work that way...you always get sick before a big event.

x2 on what runnergirl said. load it up on the green tea, get lots of sleep, take some vit. C, and eat some chicken noodle soup...

good luck...

Wow, lots of love going out to csharp about his possible cold and I definitely have one, but no one is sharing the love with me!

As if the e coli sewage trouble is not enough, here is a pic of a gator that hangs around the section of river in which we have been training. It appears to be a 4 or 5 footer and is one of a few that my friends have spotted. I have two friends that live on the river and their houses are the first and second on the left down river one you pass the highway 1 overpass.

Fabulous!

It will be just like open water swimming at home. Gators and snakes.

4 or 5 footer, bah...

at most, he'll only bite off a finger or three, maybe a hand...you don't need fingers/hands for a triathlon.

i hope i see him. i'll grab his tail and let him pull me along!

For sure, but it spooks easy. We tried to approach it one evening and it was quick to get in the river before we got close. It would be nice to get a tow from it, though.

Ha Ha, if you get a call with a message about the Augusta 70.3 that is the company that I work for delivering a message for the race organizer.  Great to see they are using our service.

a gator is like a dog or horse...show fear and you're toast.

punch it in the nose once or twice, and it'll leave you alone.

hope you both start to feel better!  nothing like the feeling of panic in the week before the race when something like that pops up.

i'm currently freaking out since a recently healed stress fracture in my foot has started hurting big time this week...can't really walk or run without pain.  Yell oh well, ice and rest for the next week...

I know the weather, alligators, fecal coliform are important ....lol.....but how about a run down of the good places to eat in Augusta. Any of you locals have any secret spots? Any BT get togethers?

Rusty Ironman - 2009-08-06 10:59 AM No, wasn't serious. lol

BTW

The ASL masters swim and some triathletes are meeting at the row house at 6:20 this Saturday to swim the river course with two escort boats from the Augusta Rowing Club.  I plan on riding all or part of tri bike course afterwards, so I will have my bike stuff with me.  Some of us are getting ride up to the 5th street marina start from row house and plan on swimming by 6:40.  I think Tom Crute and his gang were already doing the course, probably with same boat escorts.  If anyone interested let me know or just show up; either at start or row house.  Others more than welcome to bike with me and or others.  Let me know if you can bike with me after. Thanks.

PS. Donations for the Rowing Club would probably be appreciated for their efforts.

Arnold

Sounds good- I'll probably meet ya'll at the swim start.  I'm rouding up a few other of my training partners as well

A good friend of mine, Arnold Barrett aka Rusty Ironman ([email protected]) wishes everyone a good race in Augusta.  He hopes that most of his posts (all of which were his) were helpful to some beginner triathletes.    As a friend, I am relaying this message.
