Thanks guys for all your support, you are awesome!  I started out the first 3 miles thinking "no way can I run this far today". I thought I might stop at the half point so I could walk to my car.  By mile 6 all my body systems finally felt relaxed and not so stressed, the pace felt very comfortable.  I felt that way for the rest of the race. I am resting now and eating rice: )  I will do a RR soon.

So, was 3:38 for the FULL race?????

I could do 3:38, but that would be only thru 22 miles.

Great race!

The Cadmus Post Trifecta is in play.....

I took this picture w/ my phone on this morning's run.  This is looking south from Galbraith Mountain over Lake Samish, Skagit Valley and the San Juans.   Steve, Ryan and Kyla - if you guys ever want to come up and run or ride on Galbraith, I'd be happy to show you around.

TRAINING QUESTION

So I got my 17.38 miles run in.(or 28k) Just what was in my plan.
The last 5k was super hard on me.

So for all you marathon vets....How do you know if you're running is  improving? Or how do you know when/if you are ready for the distance? And out of curiosity, how many calories an hour do you take in running the distance?

Honestly today, I feel like running is starting to kick my a$$. Volume is really starting to pick up, and I'm starting to get a bit concerned about being ready. I really struggled with it. I really had to push myself through it. I mean I happy getting it in today, but it was super slow. I don't know.  I really thought during the last bit of the run today about dropping down to the 1/2 in Vegas.

Dude

Don't beat yourself up...17 miles is a long frigging way...for one of us "non runner" types.  I really have no real advice for you since that run is about 5 miles longer than anything i have ever done...except pick yourself up by the bootstrap and suck it up a little

Seriously...NICE JOB!

A Milestone for me!

6 mi run in the books!! ABOUT DA.MN TIME too!!

Next week is my Olympic triathlon.  I'm not exactly looking forward to it.  However, If I stick with my plan to just tell my mind to shut up and just finish it and not obsess about the times, I should be fine.  I'm not looking forward to the steep hills that I have to endure for the bike. :-) Frankly, I don't care anymore at this point about having fast splits. I haven't been diligent with my training, (especially the swims), so I'm not expecting a miracle. :-)   Am I putting myself too much? Should I change it to Sprint?

I'm enjoying the runs more because it's finally started to get cooler in the mornings and in the evenings. Still in the 90's during the day, too hot. :-

Trev, I remember feeling the same way last fall training for my marathon...it was anything more than 2.5 hours that really seemed hard.   You did a great job getting through it!  I am hardly a vet, however it is pretty fresh in my mind...running for that long just seemed grueling.  What helped me was to monitor my cadence every 30 minutes or so, make sure my leg turnover wasn't getting lazy or "plodding", I loved hearing my garmin alert me to drink...it broke up the monotony!

At this point in your training (6 weeks out), I don't think you should worry if your running is improving...your endurance most certainly is, if you are building the mileage according to your plan.  Trust in the plan, and don't despair, it is supposed to be hard in training.

As to your question about nutrition, I am a water and gu girl.  My method was two sips of water every 15 minutes, one gu at one hour and a half gu every 30 minutes after that.  That is only about 100 cal/hour, but for my size I think it was enough.

Keep up the awesome work and remember that the power of positive thinking can do wonders!

congrats on the run!  if you think you are going to put yourself or someone else in danger during the swim than i might advise changing over to the sprint.  otherwise,  heck no... go race the oly.  and yeah, don't worry about splits but you better have fun!!!
