"What I have learned is the variety of the workouts and the group I have found keep me looking forward to each and every workout."

"Vanity, fear, peer pressure….call it what you want – it works to keep me focused on pushing myself to the limit."

"According to CrossFit, their training helps endurance athletes expand their aerobic capacities while building their muscles to help them muscle thru longer distances."

"So I guess the goal at this point for me is just to build consistency…a habit…a lifestyle."

"I am finding a passion for this lifestyle – hope to share!"

John, AWESOME POST!!!  I went onto you tube and searched "Crossfit" .... my body hurts just watching the videos!!  I picked out some of my favorite sentiments from your post.

As Mike pointed out, there are triathlon philosophies that incorporate strength first and then introduce endurance.  I personally am starting to believe, there are many philosophies that work for this sport (there are many ways to skin a cat, right )  but the key is to 'stick with' one philosophy, AND find one that you 'believe in'. It certainly seems the case here with you, John.  My prediction is that is you use the strenght, stamina, coordination and range of motion skills you learned in crossfit, and apply them to the specific repeated technique training of SBR, you will be graduation from BOP'er to MOP'er in a hurry!!

Thanks for sharing your insight with us!!  Good stuff

X2, great post John! I have heard some great things about Crossfit from you and from some of my local friends.

great looking forward to these. We just added a baby to our flock, our third so I'm trying to figure out what to do in terms of training, especially running and biking.

anyone can share what have been successful training schedule or regiment with a newborn.  my other two kids are little older so it's easier.

Hey Jeff.  I'll be perfectly honest, when I had newborns (twice )  my training was limited to just a couple of 20 to 40 minute runs a week.  Newborns are priority, of course.  DO NOT beat yourself up about training or even worry about it.  When the small windows of time open get in a quick run or trainer ride; more for the mental break and 'you' time more than anything.

When my son was 2 years old I decided to train for the NYC Marathon (my first marathon) and only 2nd year running.  I bought a baby jogger and ran with my son every other day.  Most times he would fall asleep and I'd put the the top part over him completely to shade him.  Now, over 3 years later, people in my neighborhood still tell me how they remember seeing me run everyday with the baby jogger.  And my son, ironically, is a pretty good runner now.

GRB1 - 2011-02-16 9:44 PM Each one of these would be great topics to discuss as we move forward:

- Nutrition/hydration

- Pacing

- Transition

- Execution

Many more but a great starting point.
Absolutely. Nutrition alone is a huge issue. There are so many products on the market. You ask 10 different racers their nutrition plan in training and in competition and you get 8 different answers. You also get comments like...my nutrition plan worked great in training, but.... Good topics to explore for tri peeps at any level.

Hey Boys!  Well MY nutrition has been AMAZING since I arrived!  Not exactly on the tri diet  Schnitzel, frikadellens, potatoes, dumplings and don't forget the beer!!!  It's only day 2, feeling a little bit jet legged but antsy to do SOMETHING as our days are spent sampling the local fare and touring.  Tomorrow morning I will go for a run while my familia tours the BMW museum.  I have no clue what to expect from this as I haven't been running since Christmas and am sporting an extra 5 pounds.  Slow and easy is the goal. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend - a long weekend in Canada as it's Family Day.  Not sure if you get that day in the US.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend - sunny and 80 degrees here in north Florida - beautiful day!  Managed to get a brick in today...12mile ride - 2mile run.

Feeling great - except for my right shoulder. Ever since Tuesday nites workout I feel like someone has a hot poker stabbed into my shoulder. It has eased as the days pass but it still feels like bruised bone or...not sure but it is sore. Not so bad that I am gimped up...its just an annoyance at this point. Hopefully it will clear itself up soon.

Nutrition hasn't been all that great for me but is stil better than it was 3 months ago. It is really hard to keep from reverting to old habits - I have a terrible sweet tooth and it becomes insatiable around 8pm every nite. My greatest weakness is PeanutButter - I eat it on anything but favorite iwas cookie dough ice cream with pnut butter, maple syrup and what ever cereal in a bowl of milk.....I know...sounds like it would send anyone into a diabetic coma! But I haven't had one in awhile....I have replaced it with an almond milk, bannana, blueberry smoothie - it works fairly well.

I have found the more active I am the more my body craves the fruits, veggies and other good foods. I don't crave the crap junk food that I did when I was more of a couch potatoe. Still my weak time of day is from 8pm till bed time. I sit on the couch doing paperwork in between surfing the web & TV. There is only so much fruit, veggies, nuts I can take in a short period and they just don't hit the spot for me at that time of day. Anyone have suggestions? Other than HTFU? Guess this is where the discipline should come in, huh?

If you find a solution for this, let me know. I have similar issues. This is a tough time for me. I tend to lean towards the salty snacks though. All I can say is that if we really want it, we need to be more disciplined. Period! Why does it have to be so hard though?

Hi Guys.  I drink lots of water, try no to eat anything after 7PM.  I've also been giving myself only ONE DESSERT a week.  For me, once I eat a piece of junk food then I crave more.  If I don't eat that first pretzel, that first piece of chocolate, then it's 100% easy not to eat the second and third piece.  I resigned myself to knowing that the first few weeks of entering this lifestyle is going to be brutal.  I've made it over that hump now and this morning my scale read 6 pounds down from when this group started!  Such an amazing feeling.  It's worth the sacrifice.

Oh, and apples, raisins and bananas seem to 'tame' my sweet tooth.  And I have an evil, evil sweet tooth!!

I wanna give big PROPS to Marcia (kimmax) who called me out on my cycling commitment while she was on vacation!!  And wasn't her really calling me out, she was simply reminding me of a commitment I made to myself.  And it worked.  And it truly motivated me!  Thanks Marcia.

No worries!  You had a great ride at that!

I am an idiot!  Two days ago I donned my running clothes and the second I was outside I felt so free - exhilarating - I haven't been running since Christmas and was SO looking forward to it that I took off at a great pace and then my legs seized up about 1/4 mile in and I had to dial it waaaaay back.  I ran around Munich but got lost TWICE and what was supposed to be an ease-back-in-to-it 30 minute run turned in to a 50 minute run with no clue where I was going.  Woke up the next day with tight hammies bruised quads but we had a big day planned - so lots of hiking and climbing yesterday in a 'little' Alp and today I am moving slower than a snail - oof!  Very disappointed in myself.

Anyway - having a great time.  Beautiful country although very gray and bleek weather-wise.  Longing for a salad and some veggies.  A sprig of lettuce with a slice of tomato is their idea of a veggy side (unless potatoes count).

Hope everyone has a great week.  I *may* try for a run tomorrow but depends on whether I can move my legs or not LOL - this one WILL be easy.  Hard to believe you can get so out of it in only 2 months!!!

Oh John (tntexpress) - I have a yummy smoothie I make with peanut butter - The oatmeal gives it that filling chewy texture and because it's frozen - it might be a good substitute for your ice cream snack.  It makes two servings - 330 calories each and fills me up til lunchtime.   I think this is the recipe but can double check when I get back.

-one scoop of protein powder,
-2/3 c oatmeal
-1 frozen banana
-2/3 c milk (or 1/3? can't remember)
-1 T wheat germ
-1 T peanut butter
-1 T flax oil
-2 T unsweetened applesauce
-handful of ice cubes

Cheers!

February 28th/ March 1st Assignment.  Okay group.  Either Sunday, Monday or Tuesday EVERYONE must go back and re-read their Original Stated Goals written in this thread two months ago.  Reflect on what you've written and write a quick post on how you've positively moved in the direction of accomplishing said goals.  If due to injury, illness, or 'life in general' you were not able to move toward your goals, then post how you plan to do so for the Month of March.

I look at March as the BIGGEST building block month of the Year.  It's a longe Month, the weather turns in our favor! , and it is one of the most important footings of our foundation that we can lay down, ensuring a good 2011 Race Season.  Typically January and February are sketchy, especially this winter!! But a consistent, good March is a MUST!!  I'll repaste and post this Sunday.

And by all means necessary...please don't EVER eat this:

WHAT IS THAT!!??  LOL!!!

Frito Pie (that would be about a 7 oz. bag of Fritos, covered in chili and cheddar cheese, and baked.  It's really good, but I wouldn't recommend eating too much of it.

tntexpres - 2011-02-19 3:15 PM Hope everyone is having a great weekend - sunny and 80 degrees here in north Florida - beautiful day!

Well - looking back at this week I am disappointed. I started off the weekend strong then got bit by a stomach bug that kept me in the bed all day Tues & so weak on Wed that any training was not possible. I do feel better and am headed to the gym tonite for CrossFit.

Looking at the larger picture, I am pleased with my progress towards my stated goals earlier in this thread. I may have had some obstacles and not gotten in every planned workout but I did get in a large majority of them.

As for March - this is usually the time when previously I have let life get in the way and training starts to fizzle....I AM NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN THIS YEAR!!!!!

Thanks to all of your for your support and inspires - they have been helpful That being said - I am challenging myself to do better at the giving part of this group. I haven't done so well at giving as I have at taking - I want to do better for March.
