last year the "live" tracking reliably provided times at T1 and T2, and the turnaround mats on the run. The later gave close enough time for my support to be ready for the end, although it didn't take into account my meltdown after I passed the mat.  ;-)

If myathlete depends on cell towers for signal, it won't work well for the bike.

Thanks for that. It does use cell towers. The t1 and t2 with a run turnaround may be plenty. My last 10k won't exactly be like lightning either.

no carpet, just cold cement and asphalt.  After the swim and its cold out it will hurt even more. Stage a pair of extra shoes at the swim exit. You'll thank yourself later for it.

I think this depends a little on your feet. It was COLD in 2010 (like 46 at swim start I think) when I did B2B and I didn't have any trouble with the concrete, but I spend a lot of time barefoot so I think my feet are tougher than some. could also be that my feet were already frozen! The walk to the swim start was painful though, across cold, cold sand. I am thinking of taking some flip flops or even just socks for that bit.

Both years I did it I wore thin neoprene socks during the swim and the run to T1, and was glad I did, both because of cold feet and the running surface. But be sure to try it ahead of race time--if the socks don't fit well they could fill up with water and create drag.

How is the morning sun with the swim?  I primarily breath to the right so should I be worried about being blinded by the sun rising?  Clear or tinted goggles???

Breathing to the right you will be staring directly east for the first half of the course, until you take the left turn. With the later start, that could make sun an issue, but remember you'll be sighting north.

Few questions bout the swim for the full. Is there buoys they whole way or just at the left turn? About that turn, does the swim take us all the way to it or is it more like a S around the island? I guess what I mean is, it does go straight then a left turn or does it actually and just start heading around the island. I have see a few pics and it looks like people are all over the place later into the swim and spread out all over the place

I don't remember buoy locations, but once you are in the middle of the channel from the start, it is a straight shot to the left turn, and then a straight shot to the finish--no s swimming around the island. Regarding the finish, there is a tall building (I think white but not sure) that you can sight on. It really is best to get out and swim the course from the half start to orient yourself.

TriBee has it about right. You have to keep the boat on your left at the left hand turn ie go around it. Other than that you can swim wherever you want.

Is there any sort of practice swim, official or not?  Would be nice to get out there and just see how conditions are.  Someone suggested swimming from the half or so?

Got a room at the Hilton Riverside today, using Hilton Honors points.  Seems people may be cancelling reservations at the last minute which might open spots closer to the Finish.  If anyone is looking for a room, might want to search your preferred hotel again.

I'm at wrightsville holiday inn. How far is this from swim start and how far from finish? I was thinking of getting a taxi to the swim start. Thanks. Also, if I want to head straight to swim start in the morning can I body mark myself? How do I go about doing this (what do I put on each arm and legs)? I assume I would use a permanent marker and not a washable.

Sunspree is a mile from swim start. Sunspree normally offers a shuttle service to T1 on the morning.

Your hotel is about 7or 8mi from the finish.

You can self mark and go straight to the swim start, but do you not want to check your bike, tires, put nutrition on bike, set up T1 etc etc?

I'm staying at the Sunspree as well. Last time I did this (in 2010) they had a shuttle. I imagine they will do the same this year but will check when I get there. If you see a guy looking overwhelmed with 3 young kids, that probably me! Come say hi.

I did this race in 2010 and I recall someone in advance posting a map of the swim with suggested routing based on current flows.  Does anyone have this old map?  I looked in the 2010 B2B thread last night and couldn't find it.

The current will be the strongest to the mainland side of the channel close to the inlet.

Does anyone know how many splits the live timing will record on the bike and run?

I thought I read the answer to my question somewhere in an email or on the website but I can't locate it now.

I think it is this: End of swim, end of T1, end of bike, end of T2 turnaround of the run, end of run/race.

Thanks.  I was hoping for more on the bike course so my family/friends could estimate better where to watch me roll by.  So exciting for them ;-)

is there any parking around the swim start?   and then around T1?

I too am trying to figure out the best way to get family (wife and 2 yr old) around to see the race.  Was thinking I could drive to t1 and drop off stuff, then drive down to the start and park.  They could get out and see swim start and then drive back to T1 to see me off on the bike.

Thoughts?

I have never done this race nor been to Wilmington, but from the website it is NOT possible for spectators to drive to the swim start. They may walk or bike but there is no parking.  It does seem like parking around T1 will be possible.

Again, my thoughts are based solely on reading the website info.

Also, my brain isn't functioning at full capacity. This is my first 140.6 and I'm freaking out a bit!

Very little parking at the swim start.  Would not encourage trying to drive to it.  It's basicly a deadend road with houses lining the road that will probably be taken by B2B staff.  Might be 10-15 parking places at the end of the road.  Your family might be best off parking on the west side of T1 (towards the downtown area) and watching you come in to T1.  Just my 2cents.

Yeah, looking at the satellite map today, it looks extremely tight down that way.  Just wanted to confirm what I thought I was seeing.

Do not plan on family seeing you off at swim start unless they are willing to walk half mile or more to get there. Although there is parking at T1, and great places to watch the entry/exit at T1, spectators cannot watch you come out of the water, climbing onto the dock, as spectators are not allowed in that area.

The half start and the bridge before t1 are good places to watch swimmers go by in the water.
