Ok I have a few questions.

First...do you need a person to help you in doing a triathlon?  Someone to pick up your gear and bike?  How does that work?

Sencond...what equipment do you realy need to compete in your first tri?  I have a cheap walmart mountain bike will that work?  I got a good pair of running shoes.  I could use those on both the bike and run portion right?  Swim shorts?  Im too fat for those small speedos, so I found a longer version made my speedo, do you wear those to bike in as well or do you change into a different pair of bike/jogging shorts after the swim?

Third...how do I go about finding others in my area that are into this sport to possibly train with?

Its exciting being new in this sport, I just hope all the dumb questions I have dont affend everyone.

Thanks

Okey

I think for your first one you might want to have a friend or family member there, just to cheer you on. My husband came to mine and while he couldn't be in the transition area, he was just outside the fence and it was great to have him there. There are a number of links on this site that talk about the TRANSITION area. And making sure you have just what you need and not too much! It can be a tight squeeze with everyone's stuff all together and you want to be considerate of others. Don't bring more STUFF than you need. That said, stake out your territory. I have a red matt. Easy to find and just the right size...you can use a bright colored towel also.

Your Mountain bike is just fine. Some races even have a 'fat tire' division! See about that when you sign up.

If you are doing a short race, just get on the bike in your shorts. Padded tri shorts are best, but if your mountain bike seat is comfy and your race is short, you'll be fine.

Finding others. Well, you can check your local bike shop. Be inquisitive, people like to help. They can probably steer you in the right direction. Running stores are good also. Eventually you will find a total nutball addict who will tell you MORE than you wanted to know. Some of these people will follow you...talking talking.... delighted to find someone who actually ASKS about their addiction.

Oakey this is a link to some photos, they are on the LaPore City web site. It's a triathlon held last August. Looks like a good one! LaPorte Indiana is the right town, yes? The YWCA looks like a good resource.

Oh yeah, it's called BEGINNER triathlete... you ask all the questions you want!! we only hope that after you are experienced, you stick around and help others!!

Met a big goal today in my trek back to getting in shape.  I ran 3.5 miles with an average pace of under 12 minute mile,  Actually it was average of 11'35".  and for a mile and a half I averaged an 11'06" minutes per mile.  This is really good for me!  I am tired but happy!

Nice work! You are already faster than me!

Stephsprint:

Yes I am in LaPorte Indiana.  The YMCA Triathlon is the first tri I am doing.  Its I guess what you call a sprint...1/4 mile swim, 12.5 mile bike and a 3.3 run.  Its held on the first saturday of August, hopefully that will give me enough time to train since Im new and going at a pretty slow pace.

Still, who picks up your gear from the transition areas after you move on from that stage?  Do you have to go back to them after the race is over to gather your stuff?

Well, I will look into the transition areas on this site.  Thanks again for the help.

Everything stays in the transition area until the end of the race; then you get it.  The transition area is a controlled area, so only athletes and race officials are allowed.  That way there shouldn't be any issue regarding theft.  Still, I wouldn't leave money out in the open and my garmin is either on my wrist or mounted to my bike (in hopes the mounting will discourage a quick pick up).

stephsprint - 2012-01-29 10:08 PM Finished my 3rd Half Marathon... 10 minutes faster than the other two! Against ALL advice, I wore my Newtons. Voila! I know I'll probably have some sore calves, but the foot was much happier. Miami Beach I go under 3 hours!! Anyway, it was a bunch of fun hanging out after with 25,000 runners and their families. It's nice to have all that naughty food after too! Burger and garlic fries... gelato... 4 hour nap!

Way to Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stephsprint - 2012-01-30 5:14 AM Apparently a runner disintegrated in my bathroom last night!

At least yours disinegrated all in one place.  After a long run you can follow my trail from the front door to the bathroom

Good Morning!

How's the January new me, fitness routine, resolution, general start-again madness going?

I always like to think that by now I've probably screwed up something, so I can start fresh February 1st.

And face it, all those newbies are already starting to give up on the gym routine so the machines will be available again. GET BACK IN THERE!!

Valentines Resolution - 14 days, no beer. I've already got one under my belt!

What's yours?

January 31 in Chicago.....It's 11:30 in the am and 56 degrees!  This morning it was 45 for our run and I wore the wrong clothes so I was stinking hot.  Did speed interval ladder.  1.5 mile easy for a WU, then .25 mile, .50, 1 mile, .50, .25  all as hard as possible.  Then 1.5 mile easy.  Killer, but good.

Mine is ashtrays out of the house again.  I quit for awhile last year and then started back up.  February 1st, no more smoking in the house, which needs to lead to no more smoking.

I failed on my attempt to be 100% paleo for the month of January.  I missed probably 3 or 4 meals out of all of them.  And I had some fruit juice on occasion which is generally not allowed on a very strict paleo diet.

However, even though I FAILED, I was still successful 95% of the time.... not too shabby.  Tomorrow, I'm going to weigh myself.  I started at 163 lb so we'll see if I lost anything.

gmrGirl...you can do it! Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things. Have you tried any prescription meds to help you quit? My husband took chantax , he was done smoking in 2 weeks and hasn't smoked in almost 7 years. I was amazed at how well it worked. I think it also helped that he decided to do it himself, it wasn't me nagging him.
