So I am probably going to get expelled from the Manatee pod for this Cry but here goes.....

I am canning my OD in April. I feel really bad about this like I have failed.

Work has just sucked for the last month and the last week in particular and the next 3 weeks aren't going to get any better. There is no way that I can get in the required training to ensure that I am able to finish at all let alone in under 4 hours. I have been thinking about it for a few days since I hurt my back again and lost more run days.

Then last night DH said that he is planning on racing the night before so that means pit crewing for me so lots of heavy lifting and a very late night (he hasn't raced for so long that I don't want to say that I can't help him out). So that kind of made the decision final.

So my new plan is to change to a full sprint on 7th April and call that the last tri for the season, and then spend some time focusing on my run over the winter and do the 12k run for a reason at the end of May, and the HM at the city to surf at the end of August. Then I will have 12 weeks to work on swim before the Mandurah HIM with the boys and I will have a great base behind me for next tri season.

Now to make the plan work around work and other stuff.

DOOOO EEEEEET also applies to stuff like being prepared, life balance, etc.

Discretion is the better part of valour!

StaceyK - 2013-03-13 8:10 AM I have ordered a couple of Jeff Galloway books because many running people that I have talked to have told me that is where they started and I totally suck, seriously still struggle to run 1k without stopping

Good idea to order the books. Jeff does comprehensive running programs and it's really important to view them as a whole. They're very effective as a whole but, like any other comprehensive programs, can cause you some hurt if taken out of context.

Considering that especially his longer-distance programs (half marathon, marathon) are low-mileage programs, it is extremely important to follow them as a program. They are very good for getting you running and getting a pattern established, but they are not meant to get you faster and if you're paying attention, Jeff actually points this out over and over. They are meant to get you running and finishing a goal race such as a 10K, half or mary.

amd723 - 2013-03-11 6:55 PM Gotta tell a story on myself. I taught this afternoon at the local college. Before heading out I stopped by my house for lunch. As I was on the interstate heading to the school I realized I was wearing flip flops! Completely forgot to put my real shoes back on and then didn't have time to go back home to make the switch. So I taught wearing a suit and flip flops . I think I totally rocked that look and may try it for my next court appearance

I snorted out loud!  Way to rock the flops, girl!

Flipflops (or thongs, or the Kiwi say jandals) go with EVERYTHING. Proof!

It's all a matter of balance -- work and life and training -- and I don't think that any Manatee would say, "DOOOO EEEEEET" about an event that you were unable to prepare for.  I think revising your plan in this way makes sense.  Now DOOOO EEEEEET!

While we are on the fueling topic, I am considering just drinking water/taking gels in Boston. If I skip the sports drink I think at most it will be like 10 calories (and like 1g of carbs) per station x 26, so 260 calories (and that is a high estimate) and 26g of carbs. And that is assuming I took it at every station. I feel like IF it were an issue, I could just take an additional gel or two.

Does anyone see any flaws in my thoughts?

I did the HM with only water and 2 gels and it was no problem at all.

Obviously I have no experience, but I'm trying to figure nutrition out for my Oly, which may take me longer than your marathon, but that's another topic . . .

Just remember that you can't replace calories as fast as you can burn them.  Most people can process 250-300 calories per hour.

My new buddy, Cobalt, the Blue Tree Monitor!

He's so cool!!  I had a lizard. I miss him.

Oooh Kate! I like him!

I took this picture just for you, and to prove I'm taking teeny tiny steps to sort of patter frantically around my phobia before running screaming from it again. But at least I'm trying.

P.S. The picture actually ooks me out more than sitting on it did (although that was pretty bad too, I didn't have to *look* at it).

P.P.S. Okay, the fact that I'm wearing an IM shirt with its motto, "Anything is Possible" is really funny.

Yes, there's a plan. There's always a plan! Coach thinks I will have a somewhat unique ability to kick the downhills azz because of my overall toughness (as demonstrated by high mileage, staying injury free) but also my gait. I run pretty low to the ground (don't bring me knees up like some do) so it minimizes the pounding. The uphills will be taken easy. Getting up as quickly as I can without expending unnecessary amounts of energy.

I will say though, my concern is that I've gotten faster since the marathon I was seeded with so I will be starting in a slower coral. Not sure if that will be good as it will hold me back early or if it will just slow me down in a negative way.

Please don't feel like you failed or we'll be disappointed in you.  Doing what is best for you and being smart about your training is a good thing!!

You and me both!  I pulled the plug on IM yesterday and finally got a good night's sleep!  I'm doing the swim.  I'm gonna swim with my friend - it's her weakest leg so I thought I'd swim ahead of her give her a draft!

I think I need to really be ready to do this distance.  When I did my HIM last year I was well prepared, I did all the planned training and I enjoyed it all and the race itself.

So next scheduled tri is September 15th HIM.

A few HM's before that no doubt!

Phew relieved!

That sounds great!!  I'm glad you are feeling better about it.  I'm sure your friend will appreciate the help.

Here's me being drawn out of the envelope to win the racing kit....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9bV3_2aFMM&feature=player_embedded

I am so glad you are smack in the middle of Macca's radar Laughing

Good call on Melbourne. You'll have a blast on the swim! Also remember whatever you decide to do there is no pressure--swim, no swim, start the bike for experience, don't ... your job is to HAVE FUN and CHEER!

P.S. Lovelovelove the new avvie!

I am known as a superfan on his site!  I will get on to him shortly re- Cairns.  By hook or by crook....

I'm sick - I have a head cold, like my body said - oh great she's not racing, let's have a rest - no more fighting these germs....we are done.

Madam Artemis now wants to do another tri - April 7th.  The reason she's so keen for this one....is because it's sponsored by Jelly Belly Beans.....

Cute!  I do love Jelly Belly.  There's a factory near my parents' house.  I really need to take the tour.

Pool are fine. You have to wear something on the deck and in the shower (ick!!). I hate them at work, or when you go out to dinner, especially when people don't take care of their feet.  Mostly I don't like feet.

Just got a call from our coach. He is more excited about my race than I am! I guess, I didn't really realize what a breakthrough it was. He told me his new marathon prediction and I can't even believe it. Of course, Boston is another beast. He prefers me to run Boston strong, not 'fast' which is kind of what I was thinking. I don't know that it is a marathon to showcase speed so much, with the hills (up and down.)

I am supposed to run everything like recovery this week to allow for the adaptions to take place. And basically . not eff anything up now. Which makes sense. 5 weeks to Boston!

Indeed, but the net downhill can certainly be used to your advantage.

Any particular plan for how to run the hills? I think we discussed this before with Felicia, not that there's a catch-all hills policy, but ease/patter up and barrel down seems to be a good idea. You're not going to waste your quads any more doing that than you would any other method, and it seems fastest for the hills.

Yep, exactly it.

"low to the ground" I'm thinking Speedy Gonzales little legs are just a big blur on the ground.

A lot of things will have changed for a lot of people re. seeding. Also, even at Boston, everybody goes out too fast, so that should be just about right for you Just race your own race, maybe get behind someone who seems to be around your pace and let them do the ploughing through if need be.

Another 70.3 question...

I have never had chafing issues from my wetsuit, but my longest swim has been my Oly. Where are problem areas that I should apply body glide? Also, I went a few weeks on my old Solomons without blisters, then they started to wear out and the blisters came back so I switched to my new Solomons (same style/gen) and the blisters are still there. So, althought I'm still testing socks, I think I should plan on using body glide on my feet in T2 as well. I guess this means I need two bars of body glide, no?

Be sure to the back of your neck.  Well, really all around your neck.  I assume that your suit is sleeved, right?

You might also want to consider TriSlide around your ankles to ease removal.
