Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by fifthcircle A PBR counts as two warm Coors Life's. I don't understand why hipsters drink that crap??? Did you just call me a hipster? That is not okay. You can make it up to me by shipping some of those fruit beers for me to try My love of PBR is more tied to my love of my 20s which were spent kayaking anywhere I could find running water. A campfire and a PBR after a day on the river is about as good as life can get :-) Heck I even met my husband drinking PBR. It may be swill but every time I crack one open it brings back so many great memories! And no Thor, I did not plop down in the rec center hot tub next to the creepy guy who spends too much time there (you all know the type I'm talking about) and crack open a beer. After years of balancing chemicals at public hot tubs I'm not a big fan. I do love the one in our back yard. Especially when there is snow for snow angels next to it :-) |

I think I had better brew up my Black Currant Saison, and Raspberry Wheat. I'll ship everyone that wants one a bottle of each in time for summer (N.America). Sound good? :D Love to share some home brew! Both sound delicious! |

I just got back from an hour long ride. Temp was 8. Windchill was close to 0. If I can do it - so can you! 3/4 so far, i am coming down with the plague apparently, but I figure Ive got at least one more workout in me by Saturday. Thank the lord. You're day of radio silence filled me with dread. I just couldn't bear the thought of having to suck down Coors Lite! Glad you're 3/4 but bummed youre getting sick. Thats no fun. Just got back from another late night bike ride... 4/4 and 10 days of 21. Thanks for the motivation! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by sandishr I've got a bit of catching up to do but life has thrown me a bit of a curveball. Woke up over the weekend with a pain behind one eye. By Sunday I thought I had a spot in that eye, by Monday my vision was clearly impaired. I've seen specialists, have been diagnosed with uveitis, am on massive quantities of prednisone, and now (Thursday) it has progressed to severe vision loss. Still hoping for improvement but it's not happening yet. I'm just counting my blessings and keeping fingers crossed it stays in one eye. Fortunately I am still able to exercise, otherwise I suspect I would probably go crazy. Running and walking a LOT...I will need to get comfortable with the bike I think, but my goal is to get there over the next few days. I may need some encouragement over the next few days...especially in about a month when the prednisone starts to taper off and I crash a bit. At least now I've got a bit of 'roid energy. Sandi Holy cow! I just looked Uveitis up - what's your prognoses? You are so hard core to still be working out. I'd be freaking out. Let us know what you need - we'll be there to support you. Dave |

First time in a looooooooong time I have actually made it to the pool twice in a week. Convinced 3 co-workers to run this race with me and they joined me in the pool today so the extra motivation helped. Now just have to wait till work is over and happy hour. You're starting out the season so strong, good for you! Don't lose momentum when you've come so far - just maintaining fitness over the winter is hard and look at what you're doing! I am admiring your consistency! What training plan are you using? I'm hoping to do a HIM at the end of August and have started looking at plans. Cheers, Jenn |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Okay, Dave is such a good mentor, he sought me out and beat me with a wet noodle. Yes, I am still here. I have been reading everyone's posts - welcome to all the new folks! There are some really nice and knowledgeable people on here. And beer. I am 1 for something. I haven't been posting as I have been nil on the workout front aside from racking up steps on my fitbit (14,000+ on many days) due to my PT now thinks I have bursitis in my knee. I finally got on my trainer today for an easy 30 minutes - keeping it mainly in Zone 2. (man I love my 920, it's so cool). Tomorrow I hope to get to the pool. I think my goal at this point for the month is to try and get 10 workouts in in the remaining 14 days and that will be pushing it. I am going to ask if I can try pool running as the real thing isn't great on the knee. Whoops, crying child, have to go for a bit. |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Alright - longtime BT lurker hoping he's found his Tri training home for 2015. David you've been so nice to let folks in all along and been so welcoming so fingers crossed there's at least one more stool at the ol bar. NAME: John (firebert is a Homestar Runner reference, a pretty deep one at that, speaking of now defunct web cartoons...) STORY: High school middle distance runner who slowly got more and more out of shape the further I got into my post college years. Rediscovered running with the popularity of 5ks 10 years or so ago (I'm 40 now). I had a long cycle of running injuries, typically shin splint related. Start training in Spring, crank out a 5k or 3, shins hurt bad enough I can't walk, take a training break for weeks, gear back up to get at least a 5k in the Fall, more training, more pain, take the winter off. This happened year after year... Through my wonderful wife I've been introduced to Tris and with it the idea of cross training instead of running all the time Hadn't swam for real a day in my life until a year ago when I started Y classes. Always loved bikes but was never a serious cyclist or even really a bicycle owner since college. FAMILY STATUS: Married to a beautiful experienced triathlete, we have one child (5 yo girl who ran most of a 5k with me in Sept while I pushed an empty stroller!) CURRENT TRAINING: 3-5 hours a week. Y adult intermediate swim (the teacher just gives me workouts and fine tunes strokes at this point- I'm up in the 800-900 yard range); 1 hour a week the wife and I have a 'date' with a personal trainer; started doing 1 hr spin classes right now once/week, had been doing warm yoga 1-2 hrs a week but now I'm off track; run whenever I can - last weekend was 3 miles on a 100yd indoor non-banked (!) track, after my spin class. Tonight I'm going for my 2nd swim workout of the week. TRAINING DIFFICULTIES: 1. I live in MA. It ain't as bad as Minneapolis or Buffalo or anything but we've been in the single digits/teens for weeks now. All of my training is indoors. 2. My wife needs to work out as much as/more than I do, to keep up her Tri schedule (last summer two sprints two Olys), so with the child and two full time jobs we struggle for having enough time for both of us to train. 3. My swim has been absolutely dreadful. It's taken me a year of once a week to build up the endurance/efficiency to be able to do 800 yards in a workout. Just a month or so ago I couldn't do a 50. My workouts were limited by me doing 25 yards then gasping for breath and getting my heart rate down.... 4. The running injuries. The shin thing is always there, I've been managing to keep it under control better than I used to but I can't escape it. Then there's the ankle sprain (Sep 2013) and the MTSS (pre-stress fracture, swollen tib) (May 2014) 2014 RACES: After recovering from 2013's ankle sprain, I got myself trained up for a St. Pats 5k, then my 2nd ever 10k the end of that month, then another 10k 5 weeks later resulting in the MTSS. After the MRI and the Ortho visit, I was on rest for 4 weeks or so and no running/cycling for 8 which turned into 12 after complications (AND included what would have been my first Sprint Tri!!). Then PT, then couch-10k, then my first 5k back from injury Nov 30th which resulted in a PR! RACES PLANNED FOR 15: 5k in March, 10k in April/May, first duathlon May, first sprint tri in July, then who knows BEER PREFERENCE: I'm an IPA guy from way back and currently loving doubles (absolute favorite beer is Founders Devil Dancer) but also big into imp stouts, porters, barleywines, imperial reds...and I'll try anything. Except maybe whalenut beer... WEIGHT LOSS: Any is good. Doc says I need to lose 10, which should be doable. Once I started the cross training a year and a half or so ago to prep for Tri, I dropped 20 lbs over a year or so. I've been plateaued there since so def need the help to drop the lbs WITHOUT GIVING UP THE BEER. WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD BDASer: I'm a relative Tri noob - never a competitor only a spectator a bunch, but I'm a cheerleader from way back and will be very encouraging to all. Better, I'm a beer nerd (jrgiza on Untappd, ~200 distinct check ins last year). Better still, I'm a homebrewer. Iv'e got a spiced winter ale ready to get bottled, and will be braving the elements this weekend to brew none other than the Northern Brewer Two Hearted clone discussed early on. I've read all 14 pages of the thread so far (and lost an afternoon of quality work as a result!) and I'm psyched to be a part. |

Regular 866 Central Coast, CA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Welcome, John! This morning I woke up at 4am for the Star Wars 5k in Disneyland. Tomorrow morning is the 10k, followed by the HM on Sunday. After this crazy weekend I need to back of on my running and take care of the mild case of plantar fasciatus before my podiatrist forces me to hang up the shoes. With my next HM about 14 weeks away it will be a fine balance of bike training to keep my endurance up with a touch of running. |

They are all brewed with Lager yeast which makes them crisp and drinkable - please their hoponius union an IPL is stellar 2) Tonight I'm going to sign up for the Season Opener and I'd love to do it with you. It's in Hopkinton and it's a well run race. Here's the link - it's totally up to you and there is zero pressure but it's always fun racing a BDASer! 3) It's never too cold to get outside... And not that you don't already know, but their Framinghammer is absolutely delicious. Re the season opener in Hopkinton (at the state park right? My wife did the Title 9 there two summers ago). I don't know if my swim will be ready yet. I'd have to rent a wetsuit as I don't own one and it's gonna be wetsuit required for that one. I'm not saying no. I can be talked into anything. But having my first tri be a 1/3 mile lake swim might be asking for trouble. I got my swim in tonight (2nd this week). After an hour of running around in the shallow end playing with my daughter while my wife did her swim, I did mine. I haven't had that hard a time with 600 in months. If the challenge motivates you - then you could do it. The post race brauts are fantastic. The venue is great but the water will be cold. We could do a couple OWS in the weeks prior and you'd be all set for race day. Question - why rent a suit? If you were to race 3x - it would pay for itself. BT has a great sale on wetsuits - just keep your eye out for the Xterra sale. I think I got mine for less than 200. No pressure - just an option. Another option would be to do the Lions Sprint in Marlborough on May 31. |

I've got a few ideas percolating but nothing set in stone. I'm looking to find races to do in Spetember or October? Any suggestions Jennifer or John? One that I was eyeing was the Smuttynose Half Marathon? It's on October 4 in Hampton, New Hampshire. Any interest? Nothing like an IPA to get you to the finish line. |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I'm a Tri-Newbie I hope you have room for me too...reading the comments makes it feel like home. NAME: Snewo (Dave is a little too busy of a name in here ;-) STORY: High school swim team, though I stunk. Grade school track. Rode my bike everywhere as a kid. As I was midway through college my lack of activity caught up to me. Beer and laziness made me the man I am. I lost about 40 around 2009, but as I stopped the workouts and went back to eating too much, it all shockingly returned. I started to dream of doing the Steelman Tri (Sprint) in 2011 when I learned that Tris had shorter distances. It felt doable. I didn't have the time in 2011 to train properly, so I created my own 5K and invited my friends over for the Beerman 5K. I made shirts and put them on CafePress (I was the only one that bought one). This was the first "organized" race that entered since the Penn Relays in grade school. The race continues to this day and is now also a beer tasting event. Beer has driven my training, so I feel kindred spirits here in BDAS. I ran a 10K in a kilt just because you get free beer tickets in a kilt. Twice. Then followed those races up by running another 6 miles (or more...it's kinda hazy) with the local Hash House Harriers LVH3 on the same day. My reward to myself last year for doing the half? 12 pack of 12 different beers. On a more personal front, I want my kids to remember me being active and trying to be healthy instead of eating Doritos on the couch. I hope it helps them be healthier when they get older. FAMILY STATUS: Married to an awesome woman for 16 years. That's obvious since she puts up with me. I have 3 kids (14, 12, & 10) CURRENT TRAINING: 3 runs a week. 2 are 5K and the weekend is the long one. I'm in training for the local half marathon (April 26), so running is my focus. This will ramp up significantly now. Joined the YMCA in Oct and have been swimming once a week 1600 each time in two 800 groups 25 mins per group. I'm in the process of slowly changing the swim laps from breast stroke to freestyle. I have lumped some swims on the same day as runs. The "new as of September" bike is in the garage until it warms up. TRAINING DIFFICULTIES: The family is busy so the schedule is tight. I tend to end up using my treadmill later at night. I need more daylight please. 2014 RACES: 10 miler in March, Half Marathon in April, misc 5Ks, 10K in September, half marathon in November. RACES PLANNED for 15: 10 miler in March, Half in April again, maybe some 5Ks, practice Sprint in June, Sprint or Oly in August, 10K September, BEER PREFERENCE: I like most styles that aren't IPAs, Stouts, or Porters. One is about all I can handle out of those styles. I think wheats are my favorite, no fruit needed in the pint. Dunkelweizen is quite tasty. The only beer with 5 beer caps in my Untappd App is Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier. HOBBY: Complaining about both the cold weather and waking up early. Glad to see there is at least one night owl in here. WEIGHT LOSS: I need to lose my November and December weight. I took 2 months off after my last half. Boy can I put on weight really well. In a perfect world I'd be approaching the Clydes minimum weight come race day. WHY IS BDAS FOR ME? Other than the multiple beer references in my story, I'm also a homebrewer, though I only do about 1 or 2 batches a year. I have the ingredients for an Octoberfest still hanging around downstairs waiting for me to get off my butt. I'll post a pic or two if I get moving on it. Edited by Snewo 2015-01-16 10:56 PM |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by fifthcircle Can we talk nutrition for a bit? I'm curious what works for those that are concentrating on weight loss. I'm totally guilty of "cheating" lately. I just need to plan my meals better. I'm all ears for some good recipe outlets! -5th One summer I used the Jorge Cruise 3 hour diet to jump start my weight loss. For me it worked and I lost weight and have not gained it back. It helped to get more veggies into my diet. I still need to lose about 20 pounds and have moved to a flexible diet (IIFYM) but I have not stuck with measuring and logging my nutrition. |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Saturday check-in/update: First off, Sandi, prayers sent your way. Hope everything is going well and you have a speedy recovery. The week got off to a slow start as our group ride was cancelled because of rain and I got called for emergency coverage at another school on the same night. Sitting in a cold (by Florida standards) rain for several hours took it's toll on the rest of the week. Did get in a very good interval run Thursday night as well as 2 other shorter easy runs. Refereed another of my oldest's basketball games. Hit the pool for 1600 yards again after my youngest's basketball game today. Throw in exam week for the high school and finalizing grades and starting one of my online Ed. Specialists classes this week and no wonder I'm tired. Even managed to sneak in a date night with the wife, went to our local microbrewery, Motorworks, and had a coffee porter before catching Taken 3. Looking forward to tomorrow's NFL games followed by a 9 mile run. Alex - I know where you're coming from on the lack of motivation, spent all last year going through that. Hope you find the spark that gets you going again. Colleen - good luck on that indoor tri. Make sure you do a race report when you're done. They are great to go back through to see your progress as well as being a great tool for others that are considering signing up for that race. 5th - that offer sounds as good as the beer, count me in please. Gretchen - love the count. What did you use to come up with the 400 total workouts for the year? Better yet, can I steal the idea? Dave - a list of screen names and real names would be great. Thanks for heading this up and keeping it rolling. And welcome to the new members. Hope everyone has a good weekend and doesn't incur any CLPs. Chris |
