So, I changed my saddle back on my bike, and did a 40 mile ride yesterday (longest ever yay!), and my knee was fine for that.  Then like 5 hours later, weird enough, we went grocery shopping and my knee was really sore the rest of the day.  Interesting...  I'm contemplating an *attempted* run today, just to see how it feels, though it probably wouldn't be more than a couple miles.  My plan only says 5 miles anyway.

It's hard to miss any runs for me, NOT because I'm crazy about making every single workout no matter what, but because you should see the way my dog looks at me when I DON'T run with her.  She's breaking my heart right now...

Congrats, Julia!  Is there an rr anywhere?  How the heck do you guys get this info?!?!

Thanks for finding/posting the info about Dan....one less person to be worrying about.

Just put a big ole turkey in the oven, and am heading out for 12+ mile run.  Hope to beat the rain.....

Then I will come home at gaze at my bike.  My youngest called it 'white lightning'; as in Mom thinks she's white lightning on that thing.  LOL

Love the name......that one is gonna stick.  What time is turkey dinner?  One of my favorites right before the obligatory nap!!  Enjoy the run.

Julia, nice work.  Also waiting for the RR

And finally, and most importantly, good to hear Dan and family are ok.

Have a good Sunday peeps.

HUGE FIND!!!  AWESOME!!!!

edit.. just got your email about the link.  have a safe trip!    HERE is the direct link from julia's post about dan

WOW!!! You are good, Julia!! I was wondering if there would be any way to google around and find him, and look what you did! All while podiuming in races, packing for trips, and getting kiddos on an early flight to the Cascadia Fault Zone.

Yeah, been watching some news in bed this morning (darn rest day... too bad I wasn't up and at 'em blasting Foo Fighters in my ears, huh?!)... statistically, things are grim for the PNW given the recent earthqakes in 3 of the 4 quadrants of the Ring of Fire (Chile, NZ, Japan). Ahhhh well, it is what it is. Duck and cover and all that. What will be will be, and until then I'll just smile and enjoy the rain.

It;s a nice name. But I'd go with "Ghost." As in "so fast you can't see me." Whiuch seems fitting for you, as maybe this will help you stave off all the police officers that happen to follow you around.

man.  I am thinking about wheels.  My bike fit guy suggested 404 for the front and 808 for the back.  He said that even for a smaller rider, the new firecrest 808s are good - and not a problem in the wind.  Everything I've read indicatesa rider weight of less than 130 lbs is a cutoff for going bigger than a 404, so this surprised me.  Any thoughts from the MG?  Not sure I can swing a purchase - yikes, more $$ than the bike.....maybe a race-day rental, or used on Ebay?

Next question....the bike came with a double, and all advice to me (including the bike fitter) has been that I need a compact double.  Apparently I can sell the double on Ebay and buy a compact with not too much of a net loss.  Any thoughts on this?  Not an Ebay user, no clue as to how to go about this.

Would you buy race wheels on Ebay?  What are pros/cons?

Thanks for posting the pic....I think!  Someday I'll figure it out.  The 808 on the wall was a tubular.  I want a clincher. Wink

What is the gearing on the current bike, Linda?I think the Zipps look fab, but wonder if a rental might be better for race day, especially with all hills and wind spring and summer in these parts, maybe you wouldn't be able to appreciate their performance on training rides, but dang, they would look hawt on white lightning!

Thanks, Kim!

I think I've got an Ultegra double 53/39, with a 12/27 on the back.   I think I need an Ultegra Compact 50/34.  Once again, peanut gallery......thoughts?

As for the wheels, I was thinking the same thing about the wind around here, but I wouldn't be training on them...right?

First, the bike looks sweeeeet.  And your smile has got to be worth at least 3-5 more watts.

If it were me, I'd stay away from certain race wheels from eBay... with a carbon rim like a Zipp, you have potential problem areas around the spokes, stress cracks around the brake track, etc.  There are lots of things that would only be obvious under close inspection.  I'd try to buy a used set locally where you can inspect it (or have it inspected by a local shop) to make sure they are structurally sound.

However, if you're looking at wheels which have a carbon fairing, like the Mavic Carbones or the HED Jet, you have a bit more leniency because the carbon is simply bonded to an aluminum rim; small imperfections in the carbon would be more cosmetic.

For rim depth, I'm around 130 lbs at race weight, and I didn't have a problem running a 404/808 combination.  I now run a 404 front with a disc rear and have never had any serious handling issues, even with significant side wind.  It's somewhat counterintuitive, but having a deeper rim wheel (or a disc) in the rear will tend to make your bike easier to handle, especially when you have a differential in rim depth between the front and rear.  You could also try a 303/404 or 303/808 combination as well.

Re: a standard vs. compact... a 53/39 with a 12/27 cassette should give you plenty of spin up some pretty significant grades.  At 60 RPM, the 39/27 combo = 6.8 mph.  You can think about how steep a hill would have to be to grind up it at less than 7 mph...

However, if you wanted to go to a compact, you'd may find yourself wanting a bit more on the top end and switching to a 11/23 or 11/25 cassette.

Yay!  It is always so wonderful to have Ryan pop in for some words of wisdom!

Linda=i have a 50/34 with an 11/28.  Just to give you an idea of the ride we did up old La Honda and Tunitas, on some of those grades I was in 34/28 and we were moving at about 6.0-7.0 mph.  I really use that gear quite a bit on the hills in Woodside and Marin.

However I rarely used that easiest gear at Vineman and I bet you won't need to use it at all at IMAZ.  I like having the 11/28 vs the 12/25 I have on my road bike, cuz I can really push the slight downhills in 50/11.

Don't know much about ebay for cassettes, but I think the quality of the Ultegra compacts are pretty darn good and lightweight, too.  And not too cost prohibitive at all.  Not sure how I would fare with 39/27 on steep hills, but maybe you can test it out first?  At any rate, AWESOME BIKE!  and yes, AWESOME Smile to go with it!

Hi everyone.  Just a quick note to let you know that I am fine and all of my relatives in the area are also fine.   It was interesting to see that Julia found the message I  managed to send to my sister yesterday from my nephew's cell phone.  Our power is back on now and I will probably try to catch up on this thread tomorrow.

One interesting note:  I was on my trainer when the quake hit.  I executed what was surely my fastest ever dismount and crawled under the kitchen counter.   I was wearing my HRM for the first time in a while and have an interesting graph I'll share with you soon.

Many thanks for the messages from everyone.

wow, a few weeks goes by and soo much has happened to me...

First of all, all is okay with me & in Singapore.  SG was unaffected by the earthquake & tsunami.  Some of my colleagues have family near the epicenter and all have been accounted for & safe.  Thank god!

My boss from NY was in town for the last week and I've been crazy busy.  In the midst of a crazy week with work/training/family/etc. & my boss in town, I managed to faint after dinner with my NY Boss & SG Boss only to find myself in the ER last Wed.  Apparently, my blood vessels dilate after I drink (especially prior to eating!) and when I sit down for a prolonged time, a lot of blood accumulates in my legs.  When I stood up, I felt fine after walking around for a minute.  It wasn't until I stood still calling a cab that I dropped like a log.  No one actually saw the fall, but only knew I fainted when they heard the back of my head hitting the cement.  From what I was told, it did not sound good!!!

So over the last few days, I've been to the ER, had a MRI of my brain, a chest x-ray, two EKG tests, a stress test, & been to my sports doctor's office too many times to remember...  Some of these tests were to make sure there wasn't any damage to my brain and the other tests were to give me & my wife a piece of mind that I'm phyiscally able to complete a HIM without incident.  After all these tests, here are my key findings:

- No damage to my brain
- I had low potassium levels, which contributed to the fainting.  I was told this was common with endurance athletes.  I eat tons of bananas & spinach, I swear!!!
- My heart & blood pressure is healthy with no irregularities
- 4 most common causes to death in endurance events:
    1. Heart Attack
    2. Stroke
    3. Irregular Heart Beat
    4. Infection
- My max HR is approx. 183 & VO2 Max is approx 65.  I asked how my max HR is so low relative to my age and was told it's because my resting HR is much lower than average.  These results were from the stress test & isn't the most accurate way to measure this, but certainly better than what I have been using (220-age).  Even so, it seems low to me?? If this is true, I've been training in very high zones, which is odd because I feel like I can sustain 156 bpm forever...
- I am cleared to race March 20
- My long term health is way more important than any race, even if it's my first HIM!

My prayers go out to the everyone in Japan.  I'm looking into how I can help. either by sending money or whatever.. will revert if any of you are interested.. godspeed
