One hour hilly bike ride today after maxing out each set on leg day in the gym. Can we count that as my terrible decision for the week?

mtb ride with the local bike club last night. Man! that was tough, I had to fight for my life, well, maybe not for my life but not to be left behind. (they never leave anyone behind but you don't want to be the one everybody has to wait for)

Although some parts were pretty technical and it did feel like I could fly off my bike at anytime.

It was fun though! I will do this again (when there is no hockey that Thursday) but I need a proper mtb. The one I have is a cheap one we bought for our son when he was my size a few years ago.

Shopping time!!!

Ooohhhh!!!! N+1!!!! Exciting!!

I have to admit. I’m afraid of mountain biking. I hate hills and then you add in the risk of death on the descent, and it just doesn’t sound fun.

I see what you mean but road cycling also comes with a risk of death, with all the idiots on the road. Even without the idiots in cars, the idiot on the bike going 35mph downhill on narrow wheels doesn't need any external help to get hurt.

The only safe cycling is indoors on the trainer (although I seem to remember you telling us about falling from the trainer once).

are you talking about moi? :D :D :D

True, there is risk in all of it. I guess I just see the mountain biking as less within my control. Don't know why--it isn't like I can control the divers.

Anyway, life is full of risks...I say as I sit here in my university office with the door closed and locked because of the suspiciously large police presence outside my building. I don't know that anything is going on for sure, but it feels weird here today. Ahhh...education in the US!

I prefer to think of this as spontaneous, not dumb. I signed up for a trail 10k for tomorrow because...you know...I didn't have anything to do, haven't ever run on a trail, and think 10k is a distance I can just fake at this point. Imma gonna be hurting tomorrow, I just know it.

2500yds in the pool this morning. We did a lot of FAST stuff, which hurts in its own special way. Later, I'll risk my life going out for an hour bike, but I'll just do a nice and easy flat course today to save my legs for tomorrow. There are only 24 people signed up for this 10k, and based on the results from the previous years, I actually have a chance at a podium spot! We'll see...

Gretchen, good luck in the trail 10k! It may work a few different muscles than you're used to, but honestly, you're gonna do just fine with all the training under your belt!

Holy Cow!!! I just learned about the Anvil races…between one and 10 140.6 races in a row, 24 hour time limit for each.

I am considering the much saner 10x Aquavelo…24 miles of swimming followed by 1120 miles of cycling in 198 hours (8.25 days). Would be nicer if it were 10xswim/bike each day, but…

It is in Wisconsin in September, so some time to think about it.

I thought the mid-life crisis ag was bad in triathlons. Nine of 31 (29%) registered participants in this morning’s 10k are in my AG.

Good luck today, Gretchen!

I've come down with a nasty cold, not COVID but the lots of sneezing and achy phase.  Took some Nyquil and slept like 9 1/2 hours last night so obviously beat down.  I'll tamper down the workouts a bit for a couple of days so no Masters this morning.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I wouldn’t call it much saner, maybe less crazy but still plenty stupid. But hey, whatever rocks your boat!

Good luck today!

Sorry to hear you are sick Mike, that sucks.

Went for a nice easy mtb ride followed by a dip in the lake. Still warm, very unusual for the season. Glorious sunshine and about 25C. Almost a shame to go where I am going this afternoon but HOCKEY season starts today! Go Lakers!

Mike—sorry to hear you are sick!!

Nat—yay for hockey!

Trail running ain’t no joke my friends! Trail running four days after donating blood maybe wasn’t my brightest idea, but I didn’t remember I donated blood until the ride home, when I was trying to figure out why my HR just would not settle down.

Fun fact: if max HR is 220-age, I’m 23!! I am not 23…that hurt.

Managed to 1.) not die, 2.) not fall, 3.) cruise in right at my flippantly created, not at all data informed goal time, and 4.) pull off a 2nd AG and 8th overall female (in this very small race).

Happy with the results and will be taking at least tomorrow off to recover. That was tough! It was hot (91F) by the end, not much cooler at the beginning. Not sure at all why they started this race at 10am, but it is a bit unseasonably warm here.

Good work Gretchen! Just like you are scared of mtb, I am scared of trail running, I would surely roll an ankle or break a knee or two.

Yeah, I also need at least a week after donating blood before I can race or train properly.

Fun to be back in the hockey arena yesterday despite the glorious weather, especially as we won.

Today, a easy 10k run. Still being careful with my achilles though it’s getting better after 2 weeks off running.

Have a nice Sunday (what’s left of it Andrew)

Hey, all.  Plodding through The Crud now as it's moved into my chest already - that didn't take long.  Went for a long walk and did some core work with The Wife yesterday which went fine, though I get kinda dizzy and weak here and there.  Going to take it real easy again today - go Ravens!! (that won't help keep me calm LOL)

@Gretchen:  sounds like you had a blast - great work!

@Nathalie:  go Lakers!!!  I'm going to adopt your team, as my NHL team hasn't been relevant in 15 years.

Gretchen, if I could add a face palm emoji, I would. You donated blood 4 days before your race?! Oof that must've been rough. But sounds like you still did pretty great!
Also, agree with Nathalie... "much saner" is QUITE relative...

Nat, that sounds like a lovely day! A ride, a dip, and some hockey!

Mike, GO RAVENS! Looking good so far!
Also, sorry you're sick! You didn't miss much tbh. We did a bunch of 50s at 500 pace, so overall pretty comfortable. I was late and left early, but got about 2400 yds in.

I was also feeling irrationally emotional and left in tears, but mostly out of frustration with all the places that hurt on me. Coach made me get out of the pool with like, 5 50s left (I'd asked if I could finish the set and he insisted) so he could show me a video and adjust my form. He said I'm not rotating enough on the side I am not breathing to which is causing my arm to come too far across my body when it enters the pool, but rotating hurts my shoulder. And I just wanted to keep swimming.
But then it lead me down a hole of, well rotating too far hurts my shoulder and certain kicking hurts my knee, and other kicking hurts my hip, and thanks to vball in the rain Tuesday with a heavy, wet ball, pulling hurts my elbow.

I think one thing I dislike about swimming is how, if I'm in my own head about something, I can't get out of it. I'd rather be able to talk to people and distract myself so I can process later, but in a pool I'm left with my own thoughts. Mostly I'm fine, but if I'm not in a good space I just spiral, like what happened yesterday.

Had a pretty chill weekend after, lots of reading, and I went to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last night...not as good as the original, but I enjoyed it!

Did some PT, core, and yoga this morning. Hoping getting back into the workout routine the way I have been the last week starts to brighten my mood, as I've been feeling a little down the past couple weeks.

That is madness!

I don't know how you would even go about training for something like that. Although I suppose long term consistency and heaps, and heaps of training miles would be key. And we know you can definitely manage that.

Would be an epic challenge to follow if you go through with it.

@Mike, sorry to hear you've been a bit sick... You'll do anything to avoid that FTP test right?

@Gretchen. I've only ever done one, but trail running is hard. It's very humbling to see how much slower than your planned/road paces you can be. Well done on the AG podium. And finding your max heart rate. Whatever you measured is going to be way more accurate than the random number generator that is 220-age.

@Nat. N+1! happy days. I'm pretty sure with my bike handling skills I'd break many bones if I tried mountain biking. Of course that might mean I should go mountain biking to improve said skills... Unfortunately not enough time to do everything. Mountain biking can wait a decade till the kids find us boring. Go lakers! may their season be better than the warriors 2024 efforts.

@Nicole. Being able to see video of yourself swimming has to be a good tool to help you improve. But, I can totally see how you spiral there. It's been a tough year for you injury wise, and there's nothing wrong with just wanting to zone out and move your body. Hopefully once your surgery is done, and the rest and recovery that is going to come with that 2025 Nicole won't have any of those pains swimming. That all said, leaving in tears is not good. Sending you all the love an anonymous stranger from the internet can, and hoping for a better week.

@Me. Really tired last week for some reason. So leant into the 'rest week' concept and did less, rather than forcing more.

Swim, 0
Bike, x2, 2hr, zwift
Run, x3, 2hr 10 min, 16km
S/M, x5, 1hr 10min
Total of 5hr 20, with 2 days totally off.

Also got some building in over the weekend. Got most of the small deck outside the cabin done. Unfortunately messed up my arithmetic and ended up about 2 planks short. But happy with some progress being made.

Week 1 Ironman training starts tonight. Rather than the 60 minute Z2 ride planned, I'm going to do my ramp test (which I skipped on the weekend) and finish it off with some easy spinning to get the time in the saddle.

Yeah Mike! Another Vaxjo Lakers supporter in the US! (we should have some, as we have always had some Americans on the team- 4 this year). I don't think we have any in NZ Andrew, but then again, I may be the only warriors fan in Sweden.

Nicole, sorry to hear you are feeling down, like Andrew say, your injury hell will soon be over.

Andrew, well done listening to your body if you're tired.

a slow 10k yesterday (not extremely slow), I had to stop at 9.5 as I started to feel my achilles. It's much better but I am not taking any risks.

a nice swim after that. Have a great week BDAS!

Ravens didn't look too bad yesterday! Although I did think for a minute the Cowboys might pull off the comeback.

Of course...the Chiefs looked amazing and I totally know that even though I slept through 3/4 of the game. Dang Sunday night games!!

2500yd swim this morning, followed immediately by an hour of strength work. Swim felt good. Lifting felt like I had no oomp...

Ironman '25 training has officially commenced

FTP ramp test, followed by 30 minutes easy spinning last night. My FTP is 21W down from my last test in January. But, with my run focus and low cycling volume for most of this year a drop was expected. Actually, it's dropped a bit less than I was expecting. Although seeing numbers go down is not good, I'm happy with where I'm at, and hopefully my perceived effort and power zones will match a bit better now.

An hour easy run this morning with the dog. Easy jog, nothing special to report.

Tonight I've got a physio appointment for my knee. Like I said, it's better than it was, but not 100% clear so interested to see how the rehab plan will change. And of course hoping for clearance to up my long run again over the next few weeks.
