scottgreenstone - 2010-06-07 11:02 AM Okay people - with less than 7 weeks to go I am starting to over analyze things and freak out. Is the altitude difference in LP going to effect my performance more than my lack of ability?
Altitude will have zero effect. Zero.

Only if you live at the Dead Sea. then maybe

I'm with you in the starting to freak out mode!  I raced yesterday and was AWESOME in the water and run, but fell apart on the bike with major brake rubbing issues....all I kept thinking was...please dont let this happen for LP!!  Of course, now I am internalizing it all and wondering if Im strong enough for this race....need to bolster mental toughness!!!

Had a GREAT confidence builder this weekend... completed a 2.4 mile swim, it was an organized race and I completed it, damn that was awesome to complete!!!  As I am a Newbie and nervous as hell about the water, then I will worry about the bike, then the run.... yupp worry about that then....  I am going out to have a BLAST have fun, and remind myself that 2 1/2 years ago I weighed almost 400 lbs... now down to 200lbs I am happy, all you fast guys, dont worry I wont catch ya!!!  But I wil say hello!!!  Lets alll have some fun!!!!!

This was my thoughts about it being 7 weeks away...  Happy Training!!!

Great job - both on the swim and the weight, Two huge accomplishments. I too completed my first 2.4 mile swim this weekend, in the freakin' pool. Had zero desire to even think about a bike after that, let alone get on one. The last 3 or 4 laps I was able to raise my arms out of the pool, but they sort of just fell back into the water to continue the stroke. Finished in a very satisfying 1:26.

DC:  Great visor!!

Everyone else:  Now is the time to take your bike in for a complete tune up or even overhaul.  All of those little things that you've been living with, time to fix them.  In my case, my gears have been shifting oddly so I am having them re-cable my bike before this weekend.  You want to get things fixed so that you have time to make sure it's all good.  With all the money and time we are spending on our IM, don't skimp on the important stuff.

Tip:  Let your bike shop know ahead of time you'll be bringing your bike in.  That way they can get it in and out quickly.

Like I said earlier, I am starting to sweat the stupid stuff. From the IMLP websit FAQ:

What items do I receive for my registration?
  • Athletes will receive their sling bag at athlete check-in and their finisher hat, t-shirt and medal after crossing the finish line.
What if I am too wiped out to carry the t-shirt and medal?

I don't think I chimed in on my opinion of the Powerbar drink, but FWIW I used it on a 70+ mile ride this weekend and I liked it.

I have been loyal to Gatorade since I started triathlon, but I didn't notice this to be a salty drink at all (maybe I was hallucinating that it wasn't salty??) which is why I prefer it over Gatorade.  I also tend to avoid citruis-y drinks, but I enjoyed the lime-y stuff.

There will be a body catcher to drag you and your medal to the med tent.

Wow....what a fantastic job and story. I can only imagine the dramatic change in your power to weight ratio!! You definately have the right attitude. We are blessed to be doing this and if you're not having fun, then you are in it for all the wrong reasons. The video for one of the Ironman NBC presentations one year opens up with my favorite quote. "There are basically two types of people in the world, those who wake up in the morning and say 'I can't' and those who wake up in the morning and say 'I can'."

Just a little information I got from a freind who has a house in Jay and gave me a little inside info on the construction:

" I think the project is moving along nicely. I heard that the concrete abutments are complete, and all the steel is in place for the bridge.  It looks like they were ready to put the decking on the steel after Memorial Day Weekend so they can lay the surface (I assume concrete). It seems reasonable that they will be done by IM."

He also beleives that if they modify the course it would be to turn right on Bonneview and head towards Hazelton that way which would make the course pretty much the same as it is today.

Again...it will be the same for everyone so no worries!

I have to be honest, after riding the Bonneview turn, to me it wouldn't be close to the current out and back. We will all live, but when you go out to Hazelton, you basically go down a bit, then up a bit on the out and then back.  If you go out Bonneview - and I assume turn around in the same place, - it connects about 2/3 of the way you to the turn around, you would go UP a bit, then down a BIG bit.  I think it woudl be harder, but again, we'll all survive.  Again, this would make me plenty nervous.

Edit: ask your friend to keep us updated- HOURLY

I used three bottles of Powerbar perform on the Bike at Rev3 on Sunday and I had zero issues.  Worked fine.

Here is my day from LP. I was VERY slow, on the 2nd loop, but here are my to recordings of my garmin.  This was NOT a good day for me on the ride.. the one with Bonnieville is the longer one. I also dily-dallied a few times, mad a few calls, stopped to talk tot he wife.

For what it's worth, I also am pretty happy with the PowerBar drink. I was really worried because I feel like I'm super tuned into how I make my watered-down GE drinks, but I did the same with this one (split a bottle up and added water) and I have to say, I LIKE that it's more tart than GE. I think I get a little overwhelmed with all the sweetness I take in on the bike, and this has a nice little kick to it.

So. Whew.

Recently, I'm starting to feel a little more bad-azz than I used to. 2 mile swim on Friday, 72 mile bike + 5k run immediately following on Saturday. 2.2 mile swim today. I feel like an endurance machine! This weekend, WittyCityGirl and I are heading up to LP to do some training, and I seriously can't wait. I'm SO psyched about IMLP. Hope everyone is feeling great and positive! Every one of you is amazing that you're doing this--and not just the race, I mean--that you get out there every day and train. You should all be proud of yourselves.

OK. Whew. I'm all hyped up about my swim today. Lots of positive energy.

That is all.

Totally agree this is mildly annoying, but you know what will make you feel better? Before you recycle the bottle, re-use it several times in public places and take sips from it when other people are watching. It has an IRONMAN logo on it!

Cool

I read on ST that the detour issue is still in flux.

Nobody knows the exact detour and officially IMUSA says the bridge will be fixed in time.

Just providing an update

Thanks Fred....as I posted earlier, the locals beleive it will be done in time and business as usual.
