Well, I can walk without a limp today but am still quite sore high up on the quad and down on the inside of both knees. My first thought was to just bag the race tonight but once I got up and around I felt a lot better.

I'm thinking that the places I am sore are more relevant to up and down and some lateral motion, not forward which of course is why I am sore in the first place (I did something extremely difficult without proper training) but maybe why it might not affect my running? I am not sure of this but I am hoping for it to be true.

In the small amount of running I have done the past few days, once I get moving I don't notice the pain but of course that is at a jogging rate, not a fachmie pace.

If this was just a random 3000 I would have no problem just jumping in and doing the best that I can but these things are extremely competitive (as in Pros race them.) So, obviously I am a bit on the fence.

This ain't gonna be the last 3000 you'll ever be able to do in your life.

Bag it.

You need to save your legs for the long run, literally and figuratively.

JMHO. YMMV. Fachmie.

This is F****** Bull**** You really think I should call it?

I am so annoyed.  I think I might call quits on this whole Rainier summit thing anyhoo. It's getting in the way of my life!

I also don't know what YMMV means.

Snerk.

I really might have been her mother, too, had things worked out between Sven and I and between his daughter and Salty ...

Salts. That's just my knee-jerk reaction to your jerky knees. Knees are precarious things and it's easy to do damage to their structures that are permanent or require permanent solutions regardless of how young you are.

Or you can race, and the second you feel anything funny pulling, you STOP (I said that before). In any case, if you're gonna do it, you'll need to do some fast pick-ups while warming up, and you can re-assess then. If you do decide to toe the line, I would not try to keep up with your friend.

Yeah but it's not like I have an injury. I straight up have DOMS.

I'm definitely not trying to argue, I am just trying to understand/make a good, educated decision

Muscle soreness is the symptom of injury. Much of training is a controlled injury; we plan and hope that our physiological response and repair results in improvement (basically, that we build back stronger/better).

The problem with soreness--and unfortunately with hiking it would be more directly related to running than with, say, even cycling--is that your other soft tissues, in addition to being subject to an increased stress (racing, and at a new distance/effort) are going to have to compensate for the extra load other damaged structures may not be able to bear. What will happen to the already-damaged, currently-repairing tissues? I don't know. Are your other undamaged/less damaged structures going to be able deal well with that extra stress? I don't know.

Well, Someone has to use it!

I've also e-mailed my coach but I have a sneaking suspicion he will say something very similar.

Frown too.  Sounds like you have already made your decision, but the muscle soreness/DOMS thing was described to me thusly:

Think of a building (muscles) that was damaged in an earthquake (the effort/exercise/hike/race).  The city starts rebuilding/repairing the structure.  What happens if another earthquake happens?  That building is going to be even less able to deal with the damaging effects during the rebuilding/repair stage.

Sorry you are disappointed.

I officially have NO willpower.

There's "tenant appreciation day" happening at our building right now with a carnival theme.  I've now had popcorn & cotton candy for lunch.

And, my tongue is blue.

Too cool Kate Those frogs are in Iowa City, Iowa at the Fossil Gorge. I have a text in to my husband to see if he knows, but he's probably 80 ft under the earth's surface cat herding--aka leading camp--in guanno right now.

Okay, I will see what I can find! Yup---I am excited to do some froggy-sleuthing.....hm. maybe I kind of DO need to get a life maybe.... Laughing  Oh well, I may be  boring, but at least I enjoy it.

I've learned that if I go to bed hungry, I'm not going to die.

Even if I do a following morning workout (and I nearly always do) without breakfast.

I have not liked learning this.

Perhaps it was just the post-run-strength-workout talking, but that was the BEST cherry-spinach-mint smoothie EVER! And now its time to be off to the shower.

Oh my, rough one, eh, Darren?!  Gotta say that picture is making me laugh out loud (well, doing all I can to stifle laughter since I'm at work)

Edit:   Just had to add one of my favourite passages from Abbey.

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.”

I like this, a lot.  Thanks, MadMath!

I officially have NO willpower.

There's "tenant appreciation day" happening at our building right now with a carnival theme.  I've now had popcorn & cotton candy for lunch.

And, my tongue is blue.

Awesome!
