Gabe, yes I BQd by 6 min 48 seconds. That makes a difference because a BQ - 5 or better allows you to register early.

Thanks everyone. 2013 Boston closed by the time I got home and to a computer. It was still open this morning, but Chicago was also today and that's a lot of runners between the two big marathons. I am automatically in 2014 and I am psyched. I just didn't want to deal with trying to register from my iphone from the race and I don't regret it.

32' run today as part of local charity 5K with the family.  Wasn't planning to run today that hard but my brother in law's company sponsors a nice charity 5K and we took the whole family.  A long run Saturday and a late night with some adult beverages were all the excuses I needed.  When we got to the race my kids looked at me and said we don't run with you and mom so go ahead.  Oh well - time to race.  Hadn't ever run a timed 5K.  Went out quickly and kept my eyes on the leaders.  A couple of guys went out way fast and I knew I'd never catch 'em.  Ran smart and found the third place OA guy with about .75M left.  Settled in behind him so he knew I was there and the ran stride for stride with him until the last .5M.  I could feel him slowdown and i knew I had him and the took off.  Finish 3rd OA with a 20:22 (ran another 12' to cool down and to pace my kids).  Wanted to go sub 20:00, but I know I can.  My 8yr and 11 yr old girls ran sub 30:00 and each won their AG, the wife finished second in her AG.  Fun day, but I really hate running fast these days.

Well Done to those that raced. Good job in the marathon Chris.

Not much from me this week. Short sprint on Saturday but all under the 30min mark so no points and then rest on Sunday.

Wow, great job out there Chris!  When I said the weather would be nice and cool for a race, I wasn't thinking 28 degrees at the start!  Ouch, that was a tough first mile to get warmed up!  Was your BQ supposed to be a 3:30?  My wife was planning on running with a 3:30 pacer, but they didn't have one because they said everyone's BQ times are either 3:25 or 3:35 so that's what they had pacers for.

I personally had a great race in the 10 mile.  Finished in 1:26:29, 8:39 avg. pace and I was at the 5 mile in 44:37 so a big negative split.  I finished this race last year around 1:34 I think and was just hoping to go under 1:30.  This was a good confidence boost in my ongoing quest to break a 2 hour half marathon.  If I can do 10 in 1:30 I can surely do 3 more 10 minute miles, right?  My only downside to today was I once again had to be treated for post-race hypothermia.  Happened to me last Feb too at a race, it was still quite cold after the race and I was soaked in sweat.  The upside was that I started shivering uncontrollably in the massage tent, so I got a 30 minute post-race massage/rub down to warm me up, and extra hot soup broth!

OK, heart rate question for the group.  I wore my monitor for the 10 mile race today, just for post-race information.  My avg. heart rate was 175 and max was 186.  Here's the garmin file: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/231198526

I still really don't know anything about heart rates.  My MAF heart rate is 143.  What does this mean?  Good or terribly bad?

Andy, it is a race effort. Don't worry, not only you are supposed to go over MAF during the race, you did VERY well at pacing as evidenced by your file.

I have been feeling run down lately, so I decided to skip my work-out on Friday, and did a "short long" ride yesterday (20 miles), and kept my schedule rest day today. Don't feel too guilty as this is my recovery week. Think it was the right decision as I feel much better. Looking forwrad to my long run tomorrow.

chris2533 - 2012-10-07 7:39 PM Great job Andy. How did your wife do? Any word from Barry?

Thanks for asking Chris and a big congratulations on your BQ! Anything can happen during a marathon but I think we all knew you would do well! Congrats Andy and Ernesto and Joe! Ernesto, I hope you've built a nice trophy case. Laughing

So, long story short, I PR'd my marathon today by almost 14 minutes over my best in 2008. The final time was 5:22:50. I appreciate the PR but there are several things in there that I appreciate even more and it is a direct result of the type of training I've done with this group. (because I didn't do a lot of training miles for this; actually less than I did in 2008)

  • I managed my heart rate (first time)
  • I almost ran a negative split. (first time) The first half was 2:40:36, the second half was 2:41:14 and the last 10K was the fastest of the day with the last mile being the fastest of the day.
  • I didn't hit a wall (at all) Definitely the first time (this was my fifth marathon)

Barry that's awesome, might not be a perfect negative split but sounds like a solid effort in your second half and a great job overall.  I was just thinking today about marathons, and how it would be so great to be able to run the whole thing and not hit a "wall" at any point.  Sounds like you did just that!
