I hope Cav is OK. He hasn't logged into the site in over a month and a half.

I think we can officially declare ourselves an orphan group.

crying face

I wonder if we should go looking for an adoptive parent somewhere in the land of BT. This obviously isn't really working out.

I think the main problem is that the mentor groups are only meant to run until the end of March aren't they?

Edit: Having checked, it says the groups run until the end of March/April so maybe it is worth finding someone willing to step in

I gotta give it to you guys/gals...still going with no boss/mentor since Mid January!  Most of these threads would have died, but you have kept going!

Congratulations on your persistence!!!  I can definitely say you are not quitters!!!

If I knew enough, I'd adopt us (we did adopt our daughter a couple years ago)!!!

It seems like some of the other, already in the past tri groups do continue, so why not us if we feel like it?

I do need more hill work.  When I did my two mile run, I had the hardest time on the hills- even the long gradual one...running in the muddy hills was definitely fun as well!

ferretracer - 2010-03-13 3:09 PM Alright...for the virtual 5k for anyone interested, how about next weekend?  Any day either Sat or Sun the 20th or 21st of March (or before or after if need be).  The list I have so far is:

Rowdypaint (Pattie)
RogerWilco (Burak)
Sicone (Stav)
Wax_On (Chris)
me (ferretracer-Erik)
TTucker (Tammy)

I'll be doing mine on the 21st.  i have a 6k, but am going to note my 5k time and use that.  I did a 5k a couple weeks ago and a 6.6k a couple days ago and they were at about the same pace.  I guess to note times, copy and past the list above and put your time next to it!  If you want to join in and aren't on the list, copy and paste it and then add yourself to the list!  Good luck!

Sadly, I'm out.  My foot is still not right, so I'm going to be smart and not start running yet.  I have an appt at the PT place on Monday.  Still swimming and biking, but no running.

Hey guys!  Seems like I haven't been over here in forever.  Probably 'cause that's the truth.  Glad to see you all are still at it.  I've had some stupid injuries that have been troubling me, both mentally and physically.  Basically, I'm panicing since I've dropped $$$ on race entries and am not running.  Yes, the swim and bike are fine, but it's a TRIathlon.  That means three things, not just two.  I hope that I'll be getting some answers at the PT place on Monday.  I guess, worst case, I'll be doing swim-bike-walk.  That HIM in July is looking like a loooooonnng day.

To be an orphan isn't such a bad thing!! We have enough "brothers and sisters" in this group with various types of strengths/weaknesses etc that we can coach ourselves....in my opinion. Some of you have been participating in this sport for a while longer than others of us and you provide insight as well as anyone else....

I agree with this. I know we will not be getting advice from a coach (which Cav was) or some very experienced triathlete (which some other mentor groups' mentors are) but I think we can support/help each other. I also feel like this is a place for closer set of friends within BT. I do not think we would share much of what we shared if it were not for this group.

Having said that, if any other mentor wants to adopt us, that would be good. Maybe a private message to marmaddady (moderator of mentor groups) would do it. I will do it now and see what he says.

Here is the message I sent, for your info:

"Hi, I am from Cav's mentor group and we declared ourselves officially orphan since Cav has not logged on to the site for 1.5 months. You can check the group's messages and see the situation, if you want.
We wondered if any other mentor would adopt us, or is there any other mechanism for such a thing?

Thanks in advance."

First thing:

Stick together! You have an good group here.

Second thing:

I can be your temporary mentor until we find a permanent one for you. Please understand that with all of my other duties on BT I can't do it permanently, but I'll do what I can.  Ron and I are going to Boston this weekend for the Multisport Expo so I won't be online much between now and Monday. In my case that probably means less than six hours per day.

RogerWilco - 2010-03-16 4:08 AM Wooo-hooo! a sub 30 1500m swim at last. 500, 1000, 1500 m splits were:
8:41
10:03
10:07

Total time: 28:52

I suspect, I miscounted one lap during first 500, but it may be that I went faster since I was fresh. Anyway, even if I missed a lap, my 1500 m would still be under 30 minutes. I still got a long way to go but the training works. Thank you for your inputs about my swimming style, I plan to redo a recording about 2 months later and check my progress (if any!).

AWESOME!!!  Congrats on the goal!!!
Tonight I decided to do a hard run on a usual 2 mile loop.  I was hoping for under 15:00.  After leaving the town area and heading out to the farm fields I felt myself faltering (felt the cold wind, plus gradual up hill for about .7 miles) and was worried I wouldn't make it.  So, after heading back to a main road (and the gradual downhill portion) I booked it.  I even missed a branch in the road that I stepped right on, but luckily didn't hit the ground.  I kept pounding hard and hit the split right at the 2 mile point.  I made myself wait until I got inside after a cool down quarter mile to look at it in case I hit the wrong button.  When I finally did, I saw my time for the 2 mile run: 14:02!!!  I couldn't believe it!  So, I think in the next 6 to 8 weeks I should be able to reach my goal of doing a 5k in under 24 minutes!

Erik,
I am GREEN with envy!! Yell My best time thus far at my 1.5 mile split is 15 minutes!! I like to say that it has to do with that although not a real "hill" it has a gradual upwards slope and the wind seems to barrell down that way without fail.....but those are EXCUSES!! I will have to DO BETTER!! Smile

I have a REAL 5k coming up on 11 April so this will give me an indication of what I can do and what I need to do to improve!! LOVE COMPETITION!!

Thanks Tammy!  I went to run last night and had a good run, but my calves were aching and tight!  I stopped at one point for a 10-15 second stretch and it helped out.  I was going to swim tonight, but I passed.  A girl who I had 10 years ago in first grade had her mom pass away unexpectedly and the viewing was tonight and now I just want to be with my kids and wife tonight.  I also realized last night while running that this was the third girl from that class that has lost a parent.  So sad!

I was telling my wife about the 5K we are doing this weekend, and she was like, 'Wait I'm doing a real 5k on Saturday why don't you do it with me?'

Awesome!

She's pregnant and has pretty much stopped running, but she and her other pregnant friend are gonna walk it. I'm gonna run it. Goal is not a time, but heart rate, to stay in Zone II which is something like 150 BPM. Which will probably translate to an 11 minute mile

Erik, congrats for your run! Seems like the same, go by feel effect which happened to me in my last 10k race.

I am planning to do my 5k today at lunch break, but I have a problem with my left foot arch. It aches somewhat on the runs, because of a bad shoe which I stopped wearing as of last week. I hope I can run it. If I do not have any problems, I am going to run it as my tempo run (Zone 4) and see what the result will be

Okay, one more message But it deserves its own.

This morning I did my swim session and I tried pulling the water with my fingers slightly apart. It felt better and faster. So I decided to do a test. I swam a 100 m with fingers closed (which was what I was doing) and finished at 1:55. I rested for 1 minute to be sure and did another 100 m with finger slightly kept apart during the pull, at same RPE. The time was 1:50. After doing my usual drills (catch-up, fist) I decided to test the issue further. I repeated the same workout  I did on Wednesday morning, which was a descending ladder workout (1x500m, 1x400m, 1x300m, 1x200m, 1x100m). Here are the results from Wednesday and today. See the difference for yourself. Only thing I changed was keeping my fingers slightly apart during the pull. Looks like I got tired for the last 2 sets but all others are faster.

Wednesday:
1x500 m 9:55, leave at 10:25
1x400 m 7:55, leave at 8:20
1x300 m 5:55, leave at 6:20
1x200 m 3:50, leave at 4:15
1x100 m 1:50

today:
1x500 m 9:31, leave at 10:10
1x400 m 7:48, leave at 8:20
1x300 m 5:51, leave at 6:20
1x200 m 3:55, leave at 4:10
1x100 m 1:55

Where did I get the idea? I watched this video . I plan on watching it again (and again) for other aspects.

Here is the first virtual 5K result:
20:21

I chose (or rather I had to choose) a hilly course. Half of the way steadily climbing, turn and descend. I measured the distance using Google Earth, so it may be plus or minus 200 m off. But the time is consistent with my last 10K run. So I think, the distance was correct.

Now I'm waiting for other racers at our virtual finish line for a party Laughing. I know the wait may be two or more days long but no problem since waiting is also virtual, Smile

By the way, my left foot did not feel OK for the first 500 m of my warm-up, then it eased up and let me run. I think, I should take a day or two off from running.

A note on bilateral breathing. While I do it in my pool swims, the second I start to get out of breath in my races I switch to one-side swimming. The benefits of bilateral breathing are outweighed by the benefits of getting enough oxygen. I like Marty Gaal's article on this:
http://osbmultisport.com/articles/onesidebreathing.html

Money quote:
Would you tell a race car driver to reduce his fuel consumption by 50%? He would say you are crazy. But that is essentially what coaches do when advocating a bilateral breathing pattern over a one-side breathing pattern to distance swimmers.

Burak- Darn dude!  You're fast!  Excellent run.

Maybe I can join in on the next virtual 5k.  The foot feels better, but I'm still keeping my PT appt on Monday.  They have a special laser treatment that I'm interested in.  I'm going to try another bike ride on Sunday as long as it's not too windy.  The high is only forecasted for 45 but Wednesday's ride makes me want to get out again.  Tonight I'm back at the gym (for the second time today) and tomorrow we're going to a 90 min cycle class and get in a tiny swim.  If I ride Sunday, it will be bonus time since I'll meet my minute goal for the week on Saturday.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Eric, Pattie thanks. If we make use of age group concept every one of us may be a winner in this race of ours

Eric, with regard to bilateral swim I completely agree. I have been swimming bilaterally for 20 years now, breathing every 3rd stroke. After starting to train seriously this year I found out that it is way too little oxygen for me. Now I breathe every 2nd stroke whenever I'm doing fast (for me of course) work. Bilateral breathing ability comes in handy too, since I may breathe from left one lap, from right the other, though I tend to prefer my right.

Pattie, I'm also waiting for Sunday to get a good long ride. The rainy weather obliterated my biking very much so far. I hesitate to ride with my roadie friends. I should ride some more before meeting with them again. Some of them rides 400-600 km per week, yes WEEK.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Planned to do my 5k today but it seems the 2 loops in my local park (one is 3k the other 2k) haven't been measured to well as they only total 4.74k. If I use my average pace for that I'd get a 5k time of 27:27.
Is that close enough to use or should we wait til next sunday when I can make sure I do the full 5k?

I had a 26:04 at the 5k point in my 6k!  I was so happy!  I was hoping for a 10 minute mile pace.  The race ended up being 3.5 instead of 3.7 something because of a gate that the organizers were not allowed to open.  I did the last .4 miles in over 4 minutes including the last quarter mile up hill- serious uphill.  I heard so many people say (including myself) "I was hoping to catch the guy/girl in front of me, but then hit the hill and I had nothing left".  That hill was 'hurl'iffic!
