hughes411 - 2009-01-12 8:42 AM As long as it does not happen every day, I would say it is no big deal. Think of it as a easy/rest day. The only problem would be if you are looking for a reason to stop your workouts short. (ex. stopping because you need to return a dvd to the movie store) It sounds like it was a totally unforseen and inexpected interruption. Sometimes breaks are just as beneficial (sp?) as workouts.

x2   I used to try to "make up" every missed or shortened workout and found it just led to getting more behind as I got overwhelmed and tired.

kkcbelle - 2009-01-11 9:26 PM I have a feeling the PT will be short-term... we'll see. I ran today and it was OK, and I could bike yesterday although the hoods were uncomfortable (no big deal on the trainer). After reading online I have learned that rotator cuff tendonitis is common in the over-40 crowd. Lovely. Anyway, it's also common to have sleep irritate it and I'm a major side-sleeper and had commented earlier to my hubby that sleep was irritating me. I'm convinced the push-ups put me into my immobile state, but I'm fine for the most part at the moment. A little nervous to swim before I talk to the PT person a bit more. Hope to get it under control very quick-like! Thanks for the sympathy!!

My shoulder started bothering me when I was doing the 100 pushup challenge. It is sad that we have the desire to do physical things but that the body does not always cooperate!! My BF keeps telling me that I am asking for it with all this training and that one day I won't be able to do this.  The thought of that makes me sad.

Well thats why it is beneficial to stick to your plans, to stick to easy days when your plan calls for easy, and listen to your body when its telling you it doesnt like what your doing, etc.   When your emotions are involved, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture.   If something is hurting, we think "oh, I cant miss two workout days this week!"  so we push through.  Instead of saying to ourselves "it would be good to rest this knee for 2 days instead of missing 2 months if I injure it"

Where it can get twisted is distinguishing between soreness and pain.  If your working out insensely enough, soreness will happen..    pain still should not.

The fact is, you do any sport long enough, your going to go through peaks and valleys.  One year you may be injury free, then next it may seem you cant do anything without a injury popping up.  Talk to anyone who has done a sport for a long time, professionals included, and they will have war stories, injury stories, etc.  It happens.     It happens to sedentary people to though.    Ask insurance companies and they'll tell you who costs them more... sedentary people, not active individuals (as a whole obviously, there will always be exceptions)

Now if your doing more than your body is prepared to handle, then yeah, your asking for it unless you are so genetically gifted that you can hold up to anything, which is less than 5% of the population!

Well said Kellie! I have watched some close family members who stopped moving and that definitely has not helped their aging process. My Mom is constantly warning me that everything I do will destroy my body as I get older, but she chose to sit and watch TV all day and can barely walk across the room at only 68 years old (it's really very sad). I think I'll keep training and take my chances

New question for Greg or anyone with input on Jorge's program. He scheduled two "break" weeks over the holidays -- there are still workouts, but some are shorter and less intense. I was trying to figure out if I should do the lesser weeks, or just skip those two weeks and jump ahead to week 7 (I'm on week 4 now, 5&6 are the "break" weeks). Thoughts? I am officially starting my HIM training plan on 2/2 and plan to keep up the Jorge workouts as well as they fit into what I have planned out.

I would skip the break weeks also. He scheduled them mainly because of peoples busy holiday schedules, so they aren't essential to the program.

It is official. I mailed the registration and more importantly the check for the sprint tri on March 1st today. (Long story about registration. You could register online but they were not set up to take payments. They mailed your entry information and you had to sign the release form and mail them a check.)
I know that competing and completing should be the goal, but to many years of competitive athletics have ingrained winning into my psyche. (Guess I need to work on that.) I have already looked a past results and determined paces needed to hopefully win it.

Sorry, I'm late.  I am in a sales conference and last night I couldn't get online like tonight.  I agree, skip the break weeks.  Tell me how you enjoy week 7!Smile

I just met with Kellie at the pool she swims at.  She is super sweet and helpful!!  She gave me lots of corrections about my stroke and taught me some drills to do.  I think she is a great mentor!! I am lucky enough to live near her...I really appreciated her help.

My "Y" is having a "sprint tri". But they've set it up differently. It's 15 minutes of each sport, with the winner being the person who does the greatest distance in that time frame. Registration is limited to 100 people.

Has any one done a Tri like this? I'm wondering what the pro's and con's are. Any ideas?

I'm not sure if the bike is on their spin bikes, or an outside course. I also don't know where the run takes place There didnt seem to be much info on the brochure.

You should totally do it, Heidi!! My Y does a tri every year where it's 400 yards in the pool, then 10 miles on the spin bikes, and a 2-ish mile run. The run is outside around a baseball field just outside of the Y. It's a lot of fun and we got to practice transitions too. Yours is a bit different, but it would be a great workout. It'll be like 3 back-to-back LTHR tests! Yowza!!!

Kyla-you convinced me to do the Y Tri. I hadn't thought of it as back to back LTHR tests-that's a great perspective!!

well look at me go!   All this working out again, and it produced a net weight loss of exactly... ZERO    136 still.   Need to start creeping down to 125 quick.   I can feel my body comp changing back some so just waiting for the weight to start falling a bit.  I know it takes some time.

I hope everyone had a good week and accomplished all their workout goals so far!

Your workouts have been amazing!! I love checking out your log daily. Great that you can feel your body changing -- that's a start. I'm sure the weight will creep down soon.

I'm at 132.5 this morning, right in my range. Interestingly enough I had two days in a row where I was 135 this week, plus one day at 135.5 which sent me into a small panic as I usually only see 135 for a day here and there (PMS). I honestly didn't change anything to creep back down (OK, I did skip my afternoon cookie for one day), other than be more conscientous about drinking water. When I don't drink enough water I swear I retain it and weigh more, particularly after intense workouts. I think I am losing a fair amount of water with Jorge's workouts, so if I don't put it back then I retain. Dunno if this is the case or not but after a day of drinking more water I was 2-3lbs. lighter. Go figure!!

Have a great weekend to all. Sorry 'bout the cold temps. Brrrrrrrrr!! We are a balmy 28 this morning!
