enginerd - 2009-05-19 8:03 AM new QOTD: how often do you weigh yourself?

DH did want a fancy Tanita scale with BF% along with weight so I step on it a few times a week since it is in the closet and very visible. I generally don't pay too much attention to it as I am not out to lose any weight. It also fluctuates depending on time of day that I think to step on and how hydrated I am.

I have typically paid closer attention post marathon as I am still used to eating like I am training but without the training, so it is a good reminder to manage my portion sizes. I can only imagine post IM that I will have to reign it in.

I hate the scale and stay away from it as much as possible... guess that is what happens when you have some weight to drop and nothing is making it come off.

enginerd - 2009-05-19 10:03 AM new QOTD: how often do you weigh yourself?

I don't weigh myself all that often.  I don't own a scale and don't have too much of an interest in getting one.  I tend to stay in the same 3-4 pound range.  Actually though, the other weekend when I was visiting my parents I thought it would be fun to weigh myself before and after my long run to see how much (if any) I'd lose from sweating...almost 2 lbs.

My son got tied of buckling his younger brother into his car seat so he tried to um cheat by adjusting our scale so that the younger son met the weight requirement to not need the carseat and broke it.  On the scale I now weigh 90 pounds for a one day weight loss of 50 pounds.  I think it is the scale Smile because I don' t really feel 50 pounds lighter in one day.  Short story long,  I am not weighing myself at all at the moment.  Now that I have a reason to, I might buy one of those fancy counterballence scales, they are the only scales that remain accurate over time.  All the others need adjusting and can go false high or low depending on their adjustment and slippage.

I weigh myself almost every morning. I do have one of those body fat scales, although I take it all with a grain of salt (more useful for telling me when I'm dehydrated since it relies on body conductivity).  Sometimes can see weight gain from   Also let's me know over the winter how much weight I pick up and when I've lost it again.  But overall, my weight is pretty stable within a 5lb. range.

That's hilarious - your son gets points for creativity!

I weigh myself most days.

Whenever I come across a scale... which is weird because my weight never changes much. I'm always between 155-160.

Ditto.

I always wonder how much of a difference there is before & after a workout (what's lost in sweating versus gained in drinking fluids). Hmm...

Doh 3 weeks to my HIM sigh and my denial system was working so well.  Like I wasn't even thinking about my 90 mile bike 5mile brick this Saturday either, er um hrm nm I'm just screwed.

The weather has warmed up nicely, well kind of.  We went from mid 50s to low to mid 80's in like 1 day, soon to be mid 90's.  So I packed up all my cold weather gear and put it away.

It is odd, I live at 4500 ft above sea level, was down in San Jose for like 4 days and managed to aclimate enough to feel it when I came back up to elevation.  Hopefully I reaclimate faster than when I am down for 2 weeks at Christmas, that takes 10-11 days to get back up to speed.

I'm posting this both here and the main forum because I'm so thrilled! -

I AM SO EXCITED! I just had a major breakthrough today! I just started learning how to swim last month, I couldn't even put my head underwater, couldn't do 25y without choking on water and stopping halfway, and even if I did do 25y I had to stop for 2 minutes to catch my breath. Thankfully the masters coaches were very patient with me in April. This month I've been swimming on my own at a different facility, just trying to get more comfortable in the water and work on my bi-lateral breathing. My breaks every 25y were getting shorter, but I felt like my progress was very slow, I could maybe throw in a 50y once in a while. This week I decided I was going to do nothing shorter than 50y, my last two training sessions I completed that goal and also swam a 150 Tuesday and a 200 yesterday. My goal was to add 50y to my longest distance each swim session, so my goal for today was 250y. I decided after 10 laps to start my 250y goal, tried to relax as much as possible and take it slow... I got to the 250 and I was surprised that I didn't feel like I was going to drown, so I kept going, another and another... I set a new goal of 500y, and then I thought "My race is going to be 700y, I feel like I can do some more!" I ended up doing 750y!!!! Shattered my old record and my goal for the day, and now I know I can do the race!

What an amazing feeling, I finally felt like I found a sustainable pace and my breathing is finally starting to come together! I don't know what clicked today, but for the first time my arms are sore from being able to go nonstop! Wooooo!

Now... if only I can figure out this ITBS problem I can't seem to shake.

Yes don't get a scale... ever since I owned a scale a couple years ago I weigh myself 3-4 times a day. When I wake up, after I use the bathroom, after I eat breakfast. Before I go to bed. I even sometimes try to guess my weight before I jump on. Its a disease.

But seriously since last weekend when I died on my run in the heat, I weighed myself and noticed I lost 2 lbs. Now I'm reading more about hydration strategies since my IM race is supposedly in the 90's. And I already know I sweat like a pig. I ordered some S-Caps. We'll see how they fare compared to my usual Endurolytes.

Synon, great job. One day you'll be swimming a mile like it was nothing. Then you'll sit back and reflect on your swim beginnings and smile.

This is precisely why I don't plan to get a scale.  I know that I'd fall into the same habit!!  More than anything else for me, it would be to see how my weight fluctuates during training.

WTG on the swim it will come along.  I couldn't swim 25 yards freestyle, well and breath at the same time last year this time.  This morning was a lovely relaxing 4800 yard OWS before work.  In one year you can make huge growth on swim endurance.  Now swim speed, that is a horse of another color.

The main reason for getting a good scale for me is to identify weight loss on those 80 + mile bike rides and 15+ mile runs in 90+ F temps to help determine race hydration rates.  My IM should be 95 F or so.  Gona need to get them fluids at the appropriate rate.

Yes it has occurred to me that the Vineman heat will kill me. Last weekend's run I had 4+ bottles of fluids and still I died. Need to think about hydration a bit more.

Talking about hydration, I know that I do not take in enough when I am cycling. How much is everyone drinking, how often and how do you remind yourself?

Sigh...no trail race today. Ankle is still sore- it was feeling a tad better after a treatment on Wednesday so I went on a 9mi hike with the school. Turned out not to be a great idea. I am just sooooooo frustrated of not being able to be outside and on my feet!

First ever 100 mile bike ride today, 80 miles of 10-20 mph cross wind, 10 head, 10 tail, 5k + feet climbing, bricked with a 5 mile run. I am sooo tired.  So one really can do a marathon after the bike or is that just a theory.  Bed here I come, I'll check in tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

Had a great mental training ride today as I was out on my Tour de Cure course previewing the ride and in the middle of nowhere got a flat.  I have changed them before on the driveway at home, it was more like a weird leak, but never in the middle of a ride.  It took me a long time, but it was good practice.

I'm worried about my biking.  The idea of doing a hundred mile ride is daunting.  I know my distances need to be closer to 60 right now, but I am just having trouble adding to it.  Does anyone have any hints?

Well, riding distance on the bike = riding often and long.  So you go 55 this week for long, next week 60, week after 65, just keep upping your long ride by 5 miles and you will get there.  Keep the shorter rides more intense and get in 4 rides a week and you will build.  Now getting your seat used to  your bike's seat, must take more time than I have been putting in.  Suggestions on lubricants?

WoW! Way to ride- bet you had some sweeeeet dreams.

I just did my longest ride of 54miles- also battled some head and cross winds. I laughed when I turned and ended up riding faster up a hill than I had on the flats. It was also a good confidence boost riding without DH as he inevitably does some pulling for me when the winds are strong. Still a looooong way to go but I am building slowly but surely.
