Hello ladies - I took a rest day today.  I am going on a 40 mile ride tomorrow and a 20k run on Sunday.  Should be a good exercise weekend.  I'm really looking forward to it.

QUESTION:  Here is my latest thing.  My brother in law wants us to join a tri club.  I'm unsure about it.  I don't think I'm quite ready for that.  He says it is a great way to change up up our training a bit and have people to ask questions.  (I've got you gals to ask my questions.)  We'll see.  I'd love your input when you have time.

TRAINING PLAN:  I'm going to go to the BT Silver Plan and see what kind of plans I can find.  Right now I like the plan I posted a while a go, but I don't really know what is good.  My goal is to figure it out soon and do a test week.

Leah - No problem about the race in November.  This is the race to work on my OWS.   I'm going to investigate the rides at Camp P.  Some of the guys mentioned riding there if you go early enough.  I need to look into it more.

Have a great weekend ladies!!

Kate - I'll get back to you on the tri-club question... I'm up way too late (it's already nearly 3am) and I still haven't packed my bag for swimming. I think as it is I'm going to end up going with little to no sleep, and I'm expected to be at a friends house after that.

Going to be a LONG day.

Still freaking out about the exposed saggy legs in front of athletic co-ed people. I think if I hadn't already tossed my Tri-suits for falling apart due to chlorine I would wuss out and wear that.

Hope everyone is doing good.

Debb - I know how you are feeling.  I so didn't want to go out in public in my tri suit around all those fit folks.  Just remember this is about you getting healthy!  Have a great swim.

I think a tri club is a good idea as long as you can make it to enough workouts, that the workouts work for you at your level and that the coach is someone you like and respect their general theories and enjoy the other team members and the team ideals.

I have worked out with two clubs in my area. I am not really ready to join one yet because I not ready yet to do group rides and I really can't run with these groups either unless it's a track workout where I can adjust to my own level as I am too slow.

I have been doing the cycling class with Team Lipstick in NYC, they also have a tri team and after the class we have a month of team membership. The issue for me is it is very hard to travel to NYC with my bike either by train (which has to be non rush hour) about 45 minutes or by car (over an hour) plus parking, tolls, meters, train tickets etc.

Through the class my cycling has been improving, we ride 90-95 cadence I just have to slow a bit on big hills but I can mostly keep it over 72 cadence on hills. The class is all women which is good, the women are almost all in their mid 20's-early 30's. I am 51 and quite big but I can keep up with all but 4 or 5 of the girls on the hills, I can usually catch them on the downhills and straight aways. We have been learning pacelining and today we did double pacelines.

There is another closer co-ed team that works out about 20 minutes from my home and I have gone to their meetings and a few workouts but like I said above I nervous and unsure about group rides but after the cycling class I will feel more comfortable trying.

My bootcamp coach also has a tri team I may also consider.

No, no, no.  It wasn't like that at all.  It was a girl thing.  Girls possibly training for a half ironman when it was totally and completely irrational.  No competition with Team Skinny at all.  We still love you Saling.  We need you.  We need Team Skinny.

Okay,  I will leave you ladies alone to ponder the irrationality of a HIM (wonder if there is a HER for me to irrationally ponder?).

I finally got on my trainer.  Fifteen minutes.  It was pretty hard.  I am not sure if I had the resistance right, but I think it was too hard.  I was in the small ring and it wasn't as easy as being in the small ring usually is (when the terrain is flat).  Any insight into trainer use would be appreciated.  How do you know how much resistance to have?

The wheel should move fairly easily if you are in a small gear. I had mine set up last week but this week it's in the car so I can't say exactly but the higher gears should give more resistance than the trainer roller. Are you going to do JorgeM's winter cycling power plan?

I saw Jorge's plan, but since I just started with my bike coach, I think I will just stick with that.

I was surprised that my trainer didn't come with a front wheel holder thingy.  I had bought two stackable ones so that I could alter the incline, so I had one (or two).  But don't trainers usually come with them?  The ones I bought are pretty big so that even with only one, the front of my bike is at an incline.  Oh well.  I think it will all take some getting used to.

I don't think they come with climbing blocks unless you get a kit. Which trainer did you get? I have a cyclops fluid2 and I got an extra wheel (had an extra cassette) and put a continental trainer tire on it so I don't wear out my regular tire as it can get very hot.

What type of workouts does your bike coach have you do?

I got a Blackburn Trakstand Mag 3.  So far the bike workouts are supposed to be very easy, keeping my heart rate in zone 1 or 2.  Today I am doing a time trial to set my heart rate zones.  I was supposed to do this last Wednesday, but it was raining.  I think he is just keeping me in base-building until he gets back from his cross-country tour.

I had heard of putting a different back tire on for when it is in the trainer, but since I am going to be going back and forth from the trainer to the road with some frequency, I don't want the extra nuisance.  I may come to regret that, but that's how I am going now.  I know myself and if something is a lot of bother, I won't do it.  Besides, for right now I am just going easy in the trainer and that shouldn't tear up my tire too much.  At least, that's what I am hoping.

Is the mag trainer loud? I am setting up my bike trainer in the basement today. I set it up in the living room in front of the big Plasma TV last week as a trial but I didn't put a mat under it and I got bike grease on the carpet ....oooppps and it took 45 minutes to clean up. My new mat arrived yesterday. I'll bring a laptop down there for now to entertain myself and watch training videos.

I could hear it, but I didn't think it was TOO loud.  I thought I ordered a mat, but I guess I didn't.  I now have and it should arrive tomorrow.  I put a towel underneath for my one time so far of using it.  My mat should be here tomorrow.  I plan just to watch DVDs.  I did get some Aero Base Building Spinerval DVDs.  I watched part of two of them and am not sure that they will make it all that much more interesting.  We will see.

I enjoyed the trainer talk.  I need to think about getting one in case I miss my morning ride.

Leah - I saw you did a time trial.  Was that for your bike coach?  Tell us more.
Losta - What is going on with your knee?  Is it feeling better?
Debb - How was the swim class.  OK with the swim suit?
Joblin - Ready for Vacation?  Looks like your runs are going well.
Kiri - Did you survive the wedding?

I had a good weekend but I ate and drank too much.  My friends had a dinner party in honor of my birthday (BDay was during all the funerals and flu) and toasted me with one too many martinis.  I was going to get up and try to do a 20k with my bro-in-law but I couldn't get out of bed.  He did it and I was very proud of him.  I then ate a whopper to celebrate his success!  It tasted awesome though.

I got some great presents.  I received a big gift card for a new pair of running shoes and running gear and a swim lap counter that will give you your time, the fastest lap, slowest lap, average lap.  I also got a new Pandora bracelet.  Love it!

This week I'm going to do a Splash N Dash.  There is a 500 and a 1000 meter distance.  It will be my first wetsuit swim so I think I'll start with the 500 to try to build my confidence.  Wish me luck!

Happy Belated Birthday Kate!

Knee is still sore yet it's not really in my knee it's behind and underneath. I'm thinking of visiting the Doc about it this week but I'm scared he will say no exercise. It doesn't hurt cycling or swimming. Though last night I was doing a spinnervals DVD and the knee hurt a bit standing on the bike and doing 1 legged drills on the left side.

If you are considering a trainer I'd look at Cycleops Fluid 2 or Kurt Kinetic.
I found a good deal on an amazon package yesterday:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000WOILD2/ref=ord_ca...

Good luck in the splash & dash! Sounds like fun!

Yes, happy belated birthday.  Your gifts show that your family is behind you in this silly triathlon thing you are doing.

My time trial.  The hardest bike ride of my life.  I was supposed to go two times easy around the Rose Bowl (each circuit is 3 miles and is a very popular running, roller blading, biking, walking, pushing kids in strollers, scootering, whatever, route.  So, two times around and then the third time as hard as I can go, then spend ten minutes cooling down in the essentially deserted parking lots and then go again for another circuit as hard as I could.  Then I biked back to my car.  I only got my heart rate up to 162, which is nowhere near my max so I don't know how I can say that it was "hard."  I get my heart rate up lots higher than that running.  Anyway, my coach was satisfied and says we will do it again in four weeks.  Something to look forward to.

I overslept and missed Crossfit, but I am hoping to get to the 6pm class.  Plus I have a run to get in.  I would prefer to do one workout thing in the morning and the other in the evening - not both in the evening.  Besides, doing two in the evening takes enough time that it makes the man cranky.   I do try to avoid that, particularly since I leave Wednesday night for a meeting in Northern California on Thursday (and then I get to stay up there for the weekend and see my grandbabies).

Lisa - Go to the doc!  It would be better to find out what's up now v. a month before a big race.  This is the time to take care of health issues.  Proceed with caution!  thanks for the info on the trainer!  I'll check it out.

I took the day off.  My legs are tired.  I want to go for a run in the morning so I can rack up more miles for the Pumpkins.  I am failing miserably at the RUN MORE EAT LESS plan.  I am so darn hungry!!  I think pumping up my training again has really increased my appetite.  I have to get it under control.

I'll catch you all later.  Have a good night.

I did get in both the run and Crossfit, but it was a shorter run than it was supposed to be, which doesn't help my Pumpkins number.  I am still a little behind in that.  I will be gone this weekend and running is about the only thing I will be able to do, so I should be able to catch up.

As for the coach telling me what to do, I haven't gotten into the rhythm of that yet.  I am too used to checking the time of day, the weather, how I feel, etc., and THEN deciding what I am going to do.  I have promised my coach that I will work harder at doing the workout on the day it was scheduled.  We will see.  Today is supposed to be a two-hour bike ride day.  I have a meeting in Orange County (that I need to be leaving for) and should have the better part of the afternoon in which to get my ride in.

Lisa - Don't take any chances with your knee.  You have time to get it looked at and fixed.  A lot of doctors these days aren't telling people "no exercise."  If they can, they will keep you exercising, but just tell you which ones to avoid.

Let's have a great day of run more and eat less.

Hi guys I need to get caught up on the thread been a couple of busy days for me so I'm behind! Sorry!

Had a fairly good run yesterday another 5mph for an hour. I'm happy I can run that fast for that long... it's been sorta annoying to keep my speed down to do the longer runs. I'm wondering If I'm doing the long slow runs too far in advance and if I should be doing more of these short/fast runs to help work on speed? After the 15k I'll re-examine that.

I'm off to the pool and I'm planning on doing a really short and easy run tonight while I watch the biggest loser. I don't normally like to do several days in a row, but I want to make sure I'm slightly ahead on the running pumpkin runs. I won't be able to run the last few days of Oct because of my taper so I can't afford to get behind.

OK I'll try and get caught up tonight! Have a great day!
