GMAN 19030 - 2010-09-17 8:12 AM This weather sucks.  I landed yesterday and it was 58 and rainy.  It's still 95 in Houston.  I might wear a full Gore-tex suit on Sunday. ;-)

Dude, it could totally be worse! We could be racing in BINGHAMTON! UGH!

I went for physical therapy at 7am yesterday and it was 45* outside... can you imagine how cold it'll be on Sunday for body marking?!

RESERVATIONS FOR DINNER

Josh

Josh- you da man! Thanks! Sara and Jon (myself and arrogant bastard) will be there.  Probably Jo (cator), we'll be representing the Binghamton crew! I think Kelley2010 is coming as well.  I hope all four of us have posted that we're really into spaghetti the night before the race and would love to hang out with BT folks!

Anyone who is interested in a swim betwen 2 and 4pm tomorrow please PM me your cell number and I'll PM you mine.

More than likely, I'll be running around with a Broome County Triathlon Club shirt until race day when I'll switch into BT gear.

A note to racers... be kind out there and cheer on everyone you can from volunteers to fellow racers.  Triathletes are the best group of athletes out there and lets show 'em all just why that's so!!  When I was getting passed by literally THOUSANDS of athletes during IMLP it stung a little less when people took the time to look at the name on my bib number and say "Nice job Sara!" as they passed me.

Good luck everyone!

food cutoff is incorrect.

it was a miss-print.

all is well in the world.

dry clothes bag as well that will be transported to finish.

I spoke to the race director.  They will have it next year, but planning on August vs September for the race.  He said the temperatures were the main reason.  Water temp today was 63.

OMG. We bought super hero t-shirts at Walmart....!!!!  They didn't have Power Puff Girls, though, so I had to go with a macho shirt instead. =(

Muhhhhhh! I'm sooooo nervous, it's Friday night and I just got into town from NC... what a long drive. It's a little bit cooler than I expected, so I'm gonna do the practice swim tomorrow just to get a feel for what the water is going to be like. I think the cooler weather will be much nicer than training down in the hot humid NC.

But the HILLS! I was here about 2 months ago and drove the bike course, and that's what scares me the most. I'm not super concerned about the swim since I'll be fresh, although I'm def not fast. I've done 13.1's but the bike is the only thing I haven't really done before. 56 miles of hills... and the first 12 is killer uphill. I'm not looking to win, this will be my first HIM so I'll PR regardless... I just want to finish! Any words of encouragement or last minute advice??? I know it's going to be a mental game for me.

PinoGuy... When I did my first HIM last year I kept saying in my head "I am not a wallflower!". LOL. I followed the BT plan and that was the "coaches" pep talk at the end of the training plan. =)  You'll do great, and if you don't do great, you'll do fine.  Very, very few athletes will DNF.  On the hills take them nice and easy.  On the run, if you get tired just lean forward and let gravity do the work for you. Stop at every aid station even if you don't think you need to.  Put fresh clothes in your dry clothes bag to pick up at the end of the race... some people may want stuff to take a bird bath with before you have to go back and get your bike.  Don't forget chamois butter/aquaphor!  When all else fails on the bike keep your cadence at the pace that you want to run at, hopefully that will help you keep it easy.

Thank the volunteers... they have a lot of athletes to keep hydrated, fed and safe!

HYDRATE..  Stretch and stay off your feet tomorrow.(short stuff if you have to do something, 20 mins type stuff)  It will be a great race, so my theory is relax and negative the last half of the run.  I was told "race the way you should and not the way you could"  So that's the plan, stay within myself early, don't get caught up in the excitement, replinish well during the course and if I can, race the last half of the run.
Oh yeah - one more.. I was told to spin the hills, not hammer, and then hit the flats and downhills.  While everyone else rests you'll have some in the tank since you didn't blow up on the climbs.

Good luck! Your first HIM, SO exciting! I'm pretty stinky on the bike, too. My favorite "I suck on the bike" pep talk for myself:

"It's not a race to T2, it's a race to the finish line" -- don't try to race anyone on the bike. Save your legs for the run. There is no such thing as a bad run after a good bike. Finishing 7 minutes faster on the bike doesn't mean squat when you have to walk a half hour during the run. Stay seated on the hills if you can, use a granny cadence if you must, no shame in that--it'll save your run muscles. Big time. (I say this from experience during an IM--MANY folks standing up on their bikes, climbing those hills, leaving me in their dust, but I passed a TON of those people on the run later).

Don't work so hard that you don't feel like eating. Drink every 10-15 minutes, don't forget to take your nutrition, etc. I agree with Sara--stop at those aid stations. It sounds silly, but in the heat of the race, you can sometimes "forget" to eat, or just be concentrating too hard on pedaling.

So, don't stress the bike. Think how much better you'll feel RUNNING across the finish line (as opposed to walking). Take it easy on the bike and have a GREAT run. Don't pay any attention to people passing you on the bike, say hi to them, say great job (they'll probably say the same to you!), but just race your own race.

You're gonna do great--congratulations, you've already made it to the start line!

Have a great race!

I noticed this too, before I left the expo, so I asked.  Apparently, we're supposed to get them on race morning.  I'm going to get there a little earlier than I originally had planned on to make sure I do this with minimal issues.

The hills are the least of my concern right now.  Staying warm is the concern.  I came in from Houston where it's still 95 degrees.  I did a 15 mile ride and 3 mile run yesterday and froze my butt off.

Given that I trained for my first few HIMs in this area and then did races with temps in the 90's, you'll get no sympathy from me.

The weather is actually looking to be great for racing. Cool, overcast with low winds. As long as the rain holds off we should be good.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. Besides the usual prep stuff, I got my watch timer set to go off every 10 min to help remind me to hydrate/nutrition up, got all the race numbers on, gonna go do a practice swim in about an hour, and got to meet tons of other people. Apparently there's a good ton of people who haven't done anything like this before... so I feel much better being in the same boat. If you happen to pass #528 and I look like I'm struggling, feel free to pass on some auditory motivation My pre-race de-stressing plan for tonight: Carb-load, relax, watch "The Hangover", and bed early I plan to keep a positive attitude the entire race, say hi and great job to everyone that passes/or I pass, and try to enjoy the scenery. If I don't see you all at the practice swim, then see you bright and early tomorrow! Good luck everyone!
