JoshKaptur - 2010-09-07 4:45 PM Stoked, and definitely tapered.

I'm going to go on record and say I'm going sub 5:30. My last time a SM I did 6:56:21 (1st place clyde).  I'm tempted to try to gain 25 pounds in the next 2 weeks because I think I can go close to 6:00 at 200

You are a confident dude aren't you?

I predicted my IMLP time within 6 minutes, despite all the naysayers Cool

Oh and Kyle - I eat pain for breakfast!

are you trying to tell us that you're a thoroughbred in a donkey race?

My wife has convinced me to race age group and not gain the 25 pounds (something about not touching it if she has to lift anything out of the way), so it should be a fair fight.  So I'll actually be the bigger-than-most guy racing against the 140 pounders on SM climbs.  SM is one race where being small framed really does pay off.

All of this, of course, assuming he doesn't flat twice during the ride.

That's just a low blow man... I almost crashed on that second flat.  And it cost me a $13 latex tube (and cost you a CO2 cartridge).  Hopefully Kyle's sweepers will get all the staples off the road...

By the way - did you order your new cassette yet?

Looking on the web it seems you don't patch latex with butyl patches...I'm guessing they stretch at different rates...one dude uses latex patches he cuts from old tubes and uses the rubber cement that comes with a standard patch kit...too much for me, I'm using butyl unless I need the psychological edge. Besides, there's no bling with latex....just saying...BTW, I last weighed 140 in 7th grade....hate you polka dot types....

I'm hoping somewhere between 6 and 6:15...  This is definitely not an "A" race for me, so my main goal is to just have fun.

hahaha  I'm only 5'10 so I'll admit that I should be lighter but I don't recall ever weighing in at 140.  I remember wrestling in the 189 lb weight class in 9th grade and cutting weight to compete in powerlifting meets at 181.  I will have a full 6 pack once I hit 185lbs again.  Oh, I can only dream of doing this event 25lbs lighter.

I will say that my legs feel better than when they did I tried this course the first time.  Less fatigue, my brakes are no longer rubbing and the gearing change will make this hopefully more tolerable.

Skazi - 2010-09-08 3:08 PM 2 more days and then the 10 day forecast pops up on Weather.com giving us something else to worry about Surprised
Right now it's showing showers on the 17th......

I'm now more worried about the temperature than the hills. I rode the course; I know I can do it but I have no idea how chilly it will be that morning. I got some arm warmers and may go with road shoes and socks, and bike gloves.  I am also obsessing about the Garmin quick release strap. Not sure how quick it is if a) my wet suit gets snagged on it, b) my arm warmers get snagged on it, c) I take time to put it on in T2.

I was very cocky last October and predicted an AG win. I still think it's possible based on previous finish times but you never know who (or what) shows up on race day. Maybe the fast "old" guys will stay home and the weather will be excellent. Is Dave racing as Elite? At least he's doing AquaVelo

I would plan to bundle up and utilize the clothing drop in Westernport.  JoshKaptur can tell stories of that first year when it was cold in the am and there was no clothing drop.  Lots of very frigid people in Westernport.  (You warm up quickly going over the mountain, though).

Don't fear cold.  Fear rain.  We don't want rain.

Yeah, I was reading about that in the Athlete Guide. I'm considering it, but really don't want to stop. I'll keep an eye on the weather.

Clothing drop?  You mean I can ride up the wall naked?  Does that option get you a cement block instead of a brick if you make it?

as a courtesy to the spectators and those riding behind you, you may not stand up out of the saddle to do the climb.

That makes sense... good news is now I have an "old" tube.

And Tim - I don't make any decisions based on bling... I do it based on speed.

Rockin my al-u-min-i-um P2SL with non-dimpled (heaven forbid) SRAM S80 wheels for half the price of zipp 808s.  But latex tubes and low crr tires is cheap speed.

Thanks for the signage inspiration.  Keep an eye out on Maynardier Ridge for:

"How are those butyl tubes and low CRR tires treating you now?"

Brad, you'll be going 5-6 miles per hour about 10 seconds after the clothing drop anyway, and 2mph about a quarter mile after that, and then averaging less than 10 mph for the next 5 miles after that.  30 seconds to throw a jacket in a bag is no biggie.

I plan to just HTFU myself, however, unless it is really cold.  I did (and will again) take time to towel off in T1 the year we scraped frost.

Agree with Kyle on the rain - one of the only courses where I could consider a DNS if it rained.  Pride would get the better of me and I'd do the race, but there would be no racing on any of the bike... and I'd be going around the wall without a moment's hesitation.

Wet course = guaranteed bike crashes, and lots of them.

we may have to change your race to UninformedMan... or maybe just BrainFartMan... or maybe just Tried2BFunnyButLookedLikeANoobMan"

Assuming you also have signage for disk wheels?

Regarding the cold descent, I camped next to a 60ish year old dude at IM-CDA this year who has done 64 IMs, including 21 trips to Kona.  For the race, which was in cold water and then chilly start to the bike, he wore a plastic trash bag (with holes cut into it for his head and arms) underneath his tri top and then just rips it away when he no longer needed it.  Evidently is has a lot of thermal qualities to it and keeps him toasty warm during the cold descents.  Thinking of employing this strategy for SM.  Has anyone tried this before?

Pector55 - 2010-09-08 7:57 AM I predict 2MoreMiles wins the Clyde class with a time of 6:18.

I predict my time to be a bit closer to 7.5 hours but I still think there will be 1 or 2 people slower than me or DNF.

ROFLOL...I'm hoping to get in under 7:30...can I have your rear cassette?
