McFuzz - 2010-12-31 4:03 PM
ingleshteechur - 2010-12-31 1:07 PM No big plans for us tonight.  We've had such a busy break that I just want to chill out at home...plus my official training starts tomorrow and I will be up and at it early!  Oh, I will indulge in some Ben and Jerry's tonight.  Tomorrow I am on a sugar detox!!!

Here's a 'what would you do' question for everybody:
Sunday I am scheduled to swim and run.  All of my swimming will be done in open water at a natural fed spring called Blue Lake--check it out if you're curious! (http://www.utahdiving.com/bluelake.htm  Anyhow, we are experiencing an unusual cold snap and the high for Sunday will be 22 degrees.  Do I A:  Cowgirl up and go, doing both my swim and run out there (I'll have a friend with me)  I do have a wetsuit, am a little concerned about the transition from the water back into the cold air and having to change into running stuff and still have wet hair, etc.  OR...B. Do my run at home and do and upper body strength workout instead.  Advice?

Any chance of running before you swim?

Absolutely...I didn't even think of that.  One of many d-uh moments to come I'm sure!  That might be best case scenario right there.

It's 22 and you plan to swim outdoors?  You have more moxy than I do.  Hypothermia, illness...cramps...I think I pass under those circumstances. Way too harsh even for the Iceman.

A brand new year has started.  One in which all your dreams and wishes may still yet come true.  No sadness and sorrow has yet touched the year and hope still reigns supreme.  Hope 2011 brings joy and happiness to all. (And of course great race times)

srichards428 - 2010-12-31 4:20 PM Is anybody thinking about doing the HIM in Muncie Indiana July 9th ?  I'am thinking about doing this race but have almost talked myself out of this race.  I want to make sure that I'm ready....and as of now....I'M NOT.  My second and third race of choice would be Agusta,GA or Austin, TX.  These last two races are towards the fall and give me more time to train.

Any Imput on any of these races?

I have several friends that have don the Muncie race.  They say it is pretty flat and fast.  Not too hard for a first race.  As for the idea of being ready by then...  if you want to do it, sign up now and start training, you will be ready.  You may not finish first, but neither will 99.9% of the other people.

Ree and I just signed up for the Racine, WI 70.3 for the week after the Muncie race, and I have not ran a step in 2 months.  That is enough time to train and be ready. You will be fine if you commit now.

I do most of my swimming in the lake (since I live there)  I hate the pool.  For me it matters more what the water temps are than the air temps.  If it is 60 degrees or more, I am not too worried, much less than that, it mostly depends on what you have been doing all along.

Another thing we do early and late in the year when temps are questionable (even if there are multiple swimmers) is have a kayak right next to us the entire swim.  Safety first.

I am so proud of myself!  I installed and set my Kinetic Power Computer on my bike without help from hubby!  It's all working perfectly!  Yay me!

I also did the Sufferfest Spinnerval that came with my KK Road Machine-yeah, I suffered.  Unfortunately I did not have the computer set up and my Garmin heart rate monitor's battery is dead so I did not glean any information from my effort.  All I know is I sweat my butt off!   I loved it!

Awesome effort for you.

I suffered a bit too.  2 hours of VO2 max drills of 4 sets of 30-60-90 seconds...lovely. Was looking for 140% on the short, 125% on the long.  And during the rest periods the sadistic Computrainer put a climb to 100% and back down. Then a brick: 45 mins running with 15 at marathon, 15 at half IM and 15 at Oly pace.  Stretched/yoga followed.  I'm tired.

Didn't get home from our friends house until 2am and during the course of the evening had 2 glasses of wine and 1 glass of champaign (probably more than I've had to drink in the entire year!)  So this morning was feeling rather unperky.

Spent some quality time on the couch and actually got some computer work done in anticipation of going back to work on Monday. By the afternoon was feeling better and feeling guilty. Decided that I needed to do something. Put in a DVD and had a nice 2 hour trainer ride.

It was great to spend time with our friends, but late nights just do me in...I'm getting old

Call me the Gizmo Queen! I now have my Garmin 305 Heart Rate Monitor up and running. I've had my Garmin for three years and never bothered with the monitor.  Gotta celebrate the little victories!Laughing  Can't wait to use it tomorrow on my run and then in conjuction with my power computer on the bike!

Looks like everyone is off to a great start!  I had a nice 7.5 mile run yesterday.  I used my Garmin 305 for the first time.  It was so fun to see my mile splits and get an accurate distance for once, but my heart rate monitor is still in the box.  Maybe I'll get it set up in a few weeks.  Right now I feel overwhelmed with all the new pace and distance data!

I could see that happening to me, too. Smile Part of the problem is that I know nothing about training with heart rate, and I will need to do a little reading and research to get me up to speed.

I use pace on the run more than HR.  I should use it more.  But I know my fat-burning zone for longer runs...harder is tempo pace...  Then fartleks...which are generally so quick the HR meter isn't much help to me... HR for me helps me see if there is drift upward over time -a sign of fatigue and possible over-training. (Who me?)
