Either Sunday, Monday or Tuesday EVERYONE must go back and re-read their Original Stated Goals written in this thread two months ago. Reflect on what you've written and write a quick post on how you've positively moved in the direction of accomplishing said goals. If due to injury, illness, or 'life in general' you were not able to move toward your goals, then post how you plan to do so for the Month of March. Hey everyone! Well I knew Jan & Feb would be a challenge with hubby gone. Getting sick didn't help either but I still think that I can follow through on my original goals: 2011 Goals: Focus on cycling this year with the goal of completing a century ride in June. I also want to give the oly another try and see if I've improved. Current Training: I have uploaded the bike portion of a beginner ironman plan to start on January 22. I was thinking of following a 1/2 iron plan for my oly in August (starting in March) so that I am more than prepared. I'm behind on the cycling but will put in the time on the trainer when I get back and hopefully it's not such that I can't still meet my goals. Oly training doesn't start til the end of March and well... I have no clue what my weight is and it's not likely good considering the food I've been eating while touring but I'll fix all that when I get back and start moving!! I'm thinking the Frito pie isn't 'clean eating'!! Yikes! |

If due to injury, illness, or 'life in general' you were not able to move toward your goals, then post how you plan to do so for the Month of March. I look at March as the BIGGEST building block month of the Year. It's a longe Month, the weather turns in our favor! , and it is one of the most important footings of our foundation that we can lay down, ensuring a good 2011 Race Season. Typically January and February are sketchy, especially this winter!! But a consistent, good March is a MUST!! I'll repaste and post this Sunday. Reminder Please, everyone active in this thread, let's do this! It is for your benefit. I am, however, exempting kairous1 FOR ME, my goal set in January was A.) To lose weight. Jan 1st I weighed 182.6 pounds. This morning I weighed 172.8 pounds. So in two months I lost around 10 lbs. I fell off the wagon lots, but each time I got back on. The biggest helpers for me in losing weight were 1.) NO EATING AFTER 7PM 2.) Cutting out lots of processed food 3.) Including my H2O intake 4.) Limiting my desserts. My other goal was to race less, and I am still sticking to that. I passed up signing up for a few races and I am focused on my A Races - Quassy & Lake Placid. It's funny how January 1st seems like yesterday -- yet it is actually 2 months past. By consistently keeping my goals in the forefront of my brain and visualizing them, slowly but surely the conditions in my life align for me to accomplish them. HOW ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE??? |

Oh, and I'd like to see 195# on the scale in October when I run the HM. So, how did January and February help me achieve my goals? I would say that for the first time since I played intramural sports almost everyday in college, that I am physically fit March 1st. I've never been really out of shape or anything, but I think I could go out and finish an Olympic-distance triathlon right now. January was basically treading water (almost literally with my swimming prowess ) and fighting through Round 2 of bronchitis. February was easily the best non-summer training month of my life. For swimming: got T-pace down to 2:06, did a 2600y session and 1500y non-stop for the first time For biking: going 90 minutes at 250 average watts (on a upright trainer), bought a real bike For running: working very hard on speeding up my LSD pace to the low 9s instead of high 9s/low 10s For strength training: "experienced" Bikram Yoga, consistently got some other ST sessions in March should be great. I approach a 10-hour tri-session week at the end of the month, plus I have a taper week full of fun fitness/threshold tests: 1000y TT for swimming, and 40k TT for biking, and a 5k road race (not all in the same day ). And I'm on vacation that week, too. And I've avoided the 10 lb. winter weight creep that always seems to hit me. I haven't lost any weight (right at 204) but I haven't gained any through the "Eating Season". Looking forward to it warming up outside for sure! |

About 1.5x January across the board, except for ST and snow shoveling. I'd like March to read 250/70/25K plus 6-8 hours of ST. |

Because I don't have time on some days to do the double workouts I usually run 30 minutes on my day off. I look at it as a recovery run. I have been consistent in my workouts.
My challenges thus far have been the: 1. The healing/recovery of my plantar fascia 2. Fatigue caused by the workout volume 3. Keeping up with the home duties (bills, chores etc) 4. Family time Overall I am very happy how everything is going. My body is adapting to the training, the family has been “working with me” and “understanding” of my schedule and I am optimistic going forward. February seems to have gone by really fast! Bobby, thanks for being so considerate. appreciate that but I need the accountability or a least continue to think I can continue to train in this season. My 2011 goal: compete in at least two Olympic distance and to kill in the swim portion. This would lead to 2012 of competing in HIM Update: My 2011 goals are not that detail but as I've trained this yr, it's more specific now. i already signed up for the LA Tri Olympic distance and I'm looking for another OT in my area. I signed up for a half marathon in May. I have been swimming during lunch, usually average 1600yds per workout. But the past couple of weeks, I have been trying to work on my technique using drills from the "swimming for beginners" section in BT. While swimming I'm focus on my catch as well my glide. kinda like learning how to walk again. I also learned about the importance of exhaling during my strokes which has been such a revelation!!! But what I need now if to get some experience in open water swimming. So that leads me to my next upcoming goal is to join a local Triathalon club. Also for this month, I need to figure out my schedule and find best time to run or bike. I'm too inconsistent in those two areas right now. I find it more difficult now to split family time vs my own time. |

Super consistent. And, yeah, don't beat yourself up over missing a workout on a double day. You have a full life. And don't be afraid to take an entire Recovery Day. You are being very smart and mature with handling your PF. Running races are much harder on our bodies and feet than regular everyday training. Just a damn-smart move passing up the half to make sure the foot stays healthy and you keep focused toward your A Race. And trust me, I know how much it sucks to pass up a race. Tremendous consistent job. |

Also for this month, I need to figure out my schedule and find best time to run or bike. I'm too inconsistent in those two areas right now. I find it more difficult now to split family time vs my own time. Hey Jeff. I never intended to leave you behind! I just know the demands of a newborn. Dude, you are really on the right track with your thinking in many ways. A.) Two Olympics this year will prepare you nicely for a HIM in 2012. B.) Swimming is very technique-based. For me, once I got some decent technique accomplished it came down to just logging lots of hours in the pool and developing my 'swim lungs' and 'swim specific muscles'. Keep a close tab on your swim times for different distances (100's, 400's, etc...) and as you spend more consistent time in the pool, every few months your times should get progressively better if you're doing your technique drills correctly. For me, I've found following Swim Plans works best as opposed to drawing it up and figuring it out myself. C.) Joining a Tri Group is AN EXCELLENT IDEA!!! You will find other guys and girls in the same boat as you!! Other triathletes who have babies and young kids who are willing to meet up and train at crazy early hours; other triathletes who are swimming/biking or running just a level above from you and who can help pull you up to that level. For you Jeff, with the newborn, I'm guessing a schedule like lunchtime swims and then an early weekend BRICK with a tri-team may work for you. Consistency is key; however, if due to life demands you cannot be consistent with Running and Biking, than the Long Bike and Long Run are going to be the bread and butter of your training. Give the wife 'her time' with here girlfriends and watch the kids, and then once a week (preferably early on a weekend) meet up with a tri team and get 'you time' with a Long Bike or Run. Teaming up with other triathletes is the ONLY THING that has gotten me up out of bed 4:30AM on a Saturday or Sunday. But when I make that commitment to meet other people, I do it. I get up. I train and have a BLAST! And by 10 AM I am home with the family and have logged some serious Tri time and feel satisfied the rest of the day. You mentioned 'accountability' - hooking up with other tri-athletes for workouts will give you that accountability. You will come to rely on them, as much as they will come to rely on you. Despite what some people think, this is NOT and individual sport. This Group itself is proof of that. Enough rambling outta me. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED tntexpres - 2011-02-24 5:28 PM Well - looking back at this week I am disappointed. I started off the weekend strong then got bit by a stomach bug that kept me in the bed all day Tues & so weak on Wed that any training was not possible. I do feel better and am headed to the gym tonite for CrossFit. Looking at the larger picture, I am pleased with my progress towards my stated goals earlier in this thread. I may have had some obstacles and not gotten in every planned workout but I did get in a large majority of them. As for March - this is usually the time when previously I have let life get in the way and training starts to fizzle....I AM NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN THIS YEAR!!!!! Thanks to all of your for your support and inspires - they have been helpful That being said - I am challenging myself to do better at the giving part of this group. I haven't done so well at giving as I have at taking - I want to do better for March. John, I can really identify with you and that internal battle (war even!) being waged inside you. As long as you keep fighting, no question you will win. You are determined and unquestionably headed in the right direction!! The crossfit has motivated you and provided a nice base of fitness. I think everyone in this group is pulling for you and we can't wait to see you achieve success this year!!! |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Good to see folks making some great progress. Great stuff. As for me, I went back and realized that I was not real specific with my goal setting so let me provide a few more details. Here is what I said back in January. 2011 Races If all goes well, I hope to do a marathon, two 70.3's, an Oly and IMUSA this year. You can see some of the specific races on by training blog. Weight Control My achilles heel is my weight (I am 6'4" - 240 currently). I think I would perform best down at about 200 pounds. However, I have never raced below 215. The goal again this year is to get down to 200 for IMUSA. Specifically here are my goals for the year: 1. Sub 1:50 half mary in April 2. Sub 4:00 marathon in May 3. Sub 6:00 70.3 in June 4. A. Race IMUSA at 200 pounds, B. PR IMUSA, C. Sub 13:00 at IMUSA (finish w/ a smile) 5. Complete Lake George (OLY), Timberman (70.3) and Leaf Peeper (half mary) and enjoy every moment of these races. These are all beautiful, well done races. Now, how am I coming along versus my goals, well, just okay. I lost 7.6 pounds in February. This is a big step in the right direction. I got to the pool, not often, but I got there. I have been known to not swim until around March. Further, I feel pretty comfortable in the pool right now. More swim time will allow me to feel faster. I had another solid month of biking, and my running is in an okay place. I do not mind the inside biking, but the inside running kills me. If I can pick it up in March, I think all will be heading in the right direction. Totals for Feb. are below. All are up slightly from Jan. February's totals: Bike: 17h 30m - 309 Mi Run: 6h 53m 26s - 40.05 Mi Swim: 1h 59m 20s - 5100 Yd Strength: 2h 30m Snow Shoveling: 3h 05m Edited by gatjr33 2011-03-01 9:53 AM |

Extreme Veteran 592 Long Island | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED So, here's what I put down as my goals at the start of the year: Goal: Be much more consistent and drop 15lbs(with the focus on consistency). Race goal is the Suffolk county Half marathon at the end of March. Ran the 5k there last year and I'd like to increase the distance this time. Just started a 12 week plan. Well, starting with consistency, it's a mixed bag. My overall consistency the last couple of weeks has been poor but I've stuck to my running plan and I'm on track for the the Half Marathon at the end of the month. Overall I need to improve on this in March. As far as weight loss, it's a mixed bag as well. Stated goal was 15 lbs and so far I've dropped 7 so at face value, it seems like I'm on track . To be fair, this isn't the result of any real effort on my part or change in diet so it's a bit of a hollow victory but progress nonetheless. Now my yearly distance goals stated in my blog are: Run: 750 Miles Bike 2500 Miles Swim 75,000 Meters My actuals through 2 months are:
So, my current pace is: Bike ~ 1864 miles (700 short of yearly goal) Run ~ 736 miles (14 miles short of goal) Swim ~ 34776 yards(40k short of goal) Although I expected this for the first couple of months this year. I'm a glass half full kinda guy, so I'm looking at this is a good base for the rest of the year and on the whole, I'm happy with it and know where I need to improve. I'm going to re-evaluate my racing goals at the end of the month based on where I am. I will either begin a 20 week HIM or Olympic plan, fortunately the last race I have scheduled this season offers both distances. great assignment Bobby, very useful to take a step back and evaluate where we are. |

Something tells me you cut down your caloric intake, upped your training and (perhaps) subconsciously are making healthier food decisions. Give yourself some credit. C.) You absolutely cannot project January and February numbers out 12 months because the Spring/Summer/early Fall Months are more often considerably higher volume months due to the amount of SBR we can do outside. D.) Suffolk County is an excellent race to 'step up' to the half marathon distance. It's mostly flat, and a straightforward out & back that allows you the ability to more easily pace. E.) Did I mention what a cool avatar you have? FIRE!!!! |

February's totals: Bike: 17h 30m - 309 Mi Run: 6h 53m 26s - 40.05 Mi Swim: 1h 59m 20s - 5100 Yd Strength: 2h 30m Snow Shoveling: 3h 05m Solid Month George!! You are an Ironman Veteran and I'm so glad to have you in this group. Kudos for getting to the pool in February. Just to help you clarify your goal (as I want you to accomplish a wicked PR at LP, and getting down to 200lbs even will very well help you accomplish that. You need to lose 8 pounds per month. YOU CAN DO IT GEORGE!! |

Did I mention what a cool avatar you have? FIRE!!!! Hahaa, thanks. That was right down the road at Cedar Beach last summer, I was channeling my inner Beavis. To be fair, I should have said I haven't done anything different from pre holiday eating/drinking. That was all holiday OVER consumption that was lost. Hope I didn't come across as diminishing anyone's weight loss. I thought the same thing about Suffolk 13.1 as a first time half, thanks for the vaildation. I know I told you I couldn't do the KP 15k cause it's on a Saturday(which is true) but, as a former Northport resident, I'm secretly scared of the hills! |

Expert 640 Sun Prairie, WI | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED February was what I would consider a pretty good month, with a few to many days off, but all in all I can't complain. I have not been paying to much attention to the scale as I have tailored my training a bit. I have been doing more strength training than in the past and I feel as though I have added some good muscle mass, thankfully it replaced some winter "insulation" I would caution others on this as well, in that sometimes it is better not to pay to much attention to the scale and probably more attention to how your clothes are fitting. Meaning you may actually be maintaining the same weight with added lean muscle replacing fat. That is a good thing in that the fat/weight will come off in the long run. Back to my goals. My main goal is to maintain consistent training. This is hard for me in that my big race is still 7 1/2 months away. It is a balance between building volume without getting burned out. I have been trying to mix is up a bit with the added strength training. Here are my monthly totals. Not as much run volume as I would have liked but I will pick this up over the next month. Looking forward to running outside again!.
