Master 2158 | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread My wife booked the hotel, but I can't remember which one it is. As far as spectating, I would think that there isn't much place on the run except right near the bridge. Anyone can walk over, and there are TONS of buses and a bus stop that is easy to get to if you are watching people one the steps/bridge area. And of course, there will be OK spectating in NYC once we hit the greenway. For the bike.....not many choices. A car could theoretically pull over in the grassy areas along the palisades, but I am not sure about the legality of that. It also depends on how they are routing the traffic due to the closure of the palisades. Should be interesting. |

Still have a lot of long bike & run miles to go to get to that IM, though.... I'm hoping I can get up to check out the course at some point over the next several weeks. How's everybody feeling?? Nice work Jenny! I did that race as well. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread A couple weekends ago I did a very hilly half. In hindsight, I would have preferred my road bike over the tri bike, as I climb much better in the roadie, plus I'm just more comfortable with it. We had some very looong hills. Couldn't seem to find the right gearing on the tri-bike - i was either mashing or spinning going nowhere. I got a 53/39 with 12-25 on the road bike. On the tri bike, I got a compact crank and 11-26. The race threw me for a loop. So, considering the hills we'll be hitting, I'm wondering if I should go with the road bike. Tell me that's a silly thought, right?? The hills won't be as long nor steep as what I saw in my Half. The tri-bike is definitely the way to go, right? Maybe I ought to just switch out the cassette to an 11-23 ? Thoughts? |

You talking Hunter HITS ? I used my tri bike with a 53-39 and 23-11 and those hills were a bit much for me. For IMNY I'll be switching rear cassette, maybe to a 25-12, or more probably to a 28-11 which will help on the T1 hill. Your compact with a 23-11 or 25-12 will be fine. Most of the Palisades Parkway hills are rolling so should be OK - you can get a good head of steam up downhill that will take you quite a way up the next hill - there are none that I recall that are sustained out of the seat efforts. For what its worth I used 25-12 rear with a standard crank at IMCDA in 2010 and didn't find the hills to be that bad...and i don't think IMNY is any worse that CDA |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread Yeah, Hunter was it. That 10 mile climb was brutal for me. I was ok on that steeper climb that came earlier, but then I just couldn't find my sweet spot for the gears. I didn't know that the climb was going to be that long, so it was tough mentally for me, and I figure now I'm overreacting. Thanks for the recommendations. |

As long as you're capable of staying in aero most of the time, definitely ride your tri bike. The only steep-ish sections are short, and right at the beginning of the race (climb out of transition, exit from park - good idea to walk these the day before the race if you haven't seen them yet). From my experience riding it on computrainer, every other inch of the course can be ridden in aero, no problem, with the possible exception of hill on the southbound legs around miles 40 and 100, where you'll probably want a break anyway. |

Member 127 Orlando | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread I'll be coming into NYC from Florida for this race. Since I do not like to travel with my bike, I will be using TriBike Transport and the accompanying valet program. I'm glad they will have the valet program for after the race to get my bike from T2 back to the Ironman Village. I have a question for the group, though, and hopefully somebody knows something. TriBike's post-up is going to be in the Ironman Village on the NYC side while T1 is on the NJ side. Now transportation in NYC is not the same as most other places. I was not planning on renting car while there. Is there any way that has been discussed for athletes without vehicles to get their bikes from Ironman Village to T1 for check-in? |

I know they said one option is that you can ride the bike up the Greenway and over the GWB (follow the run course) over to T1. I thought there was something about a ferry though..have to re-check. I'm also bringing my bike from the NYC side, and while I seem to have forgotten the specifics, I know I was ok with whatever they suggested. |

The map of the transition area shows that Tri-Bike Transport is also set up there - I'm hoping that folks that are shipping their bikes via TBT from out of town can pick them up and drop them off right there in transition, and not have to deal with picking them up in Manhattan and bringing them across the river. Otherwise, you are allowed to bring your bike on the race ferries Friday and Saturday if you have an athlete wristband, which won't be too bad but would require you to get your bike 15 blocks south along the west side from the expo area to the ferry terminal. |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread More lodging questions..... Looks like I missed out on any of the "host" hotels (no surprise, really....), so I'm looking for another option. On the NY side I found a few hotels that are a couple blocks from the Ferry terminal (a little east of Times Square - 38th/39th street between 8th & 11th Ave). I don't really know the area at all... How will it be to walk to the ferry terminal from one of these hotels @ 4 am to catch the athlete ferry in the morning? I suspect I won't be the only one making that walk, but any insight anyone can give me would be helpful. |

I have a 125 Mile bike and 17 mile run planned for Sat & Sun. Anyone interested in joining me? Do you know of any groups that are going for long rides / runs this weekend? I'm coming into town and was hoping not to tow the line alone the entire time. Would love the company. Send me an email, or let me know about a group ride/run. Much appreciated. It takes approximately 5 mins to jog to the ferry station (after you factor in the traffic lights). You don't even need a cab to get there. Edited by wholeydiver 2012-06-29 10:31 AM |

So, I'm having faith that while race day will be tough, it won't be brutal. But you're right...anything is possible. |

I believe that is where we are running - the Port Authority web-site says the North Pedestrian path is "normally closed". Not that it probably makes that much difference... If you photographed the south side pedestrian path, we may be climbing different stairs, but I imagine they're all pretty similar..... I'm hoping to go do a little course recon within the next few weeks, too.... |
