Originally posted by glfprncs After yesterday's easy 30 minute spin on the bike and 20 minutes on the elliptical, my knee is THROBBING today (but not SWOLL!!! LOL). It's time to really listen, back off, and wait for my appointment to roll around. So...I had to do what my body would let me today and did a 60 minute upper body weight workout and followed it up with a 20 minute core workout. My arms will be busted tomorrow. They're calling for temperatures in the single digits tomorrow night. Everybody and their sister was at the grocery store today buying up all the bread and milk just in case we're covered in snow for the next 30 days and 30 nights. Coming from Ohio, it cracks me up when they call for cold weather in the South. Vacation is over...back to the 8th graders tomorrow. 90 more days, not that I'm counting!

Nancy-hope the knee gets better. Today was my first "real" run since mine started acting up 2 weeks ago. Felt great to be running.

Finished up the big swim week. I usually swim at a pool near my office during the week and it I swim on the weekend the rec center pool is only a mile from my house. Nice, rarely crowded but they always keep the water too warm. Today when they opened up at Noon the temp in the building was 84 and the pool temp was 86! I'm not crazy about swimming in a cold pool but it beats the hot pool anyday. I felt like I was melting toward the end of the workout. Even took my swim cap off during the last few intervals to try to cool down. Wonder if a hot pool causes slower times like hot weather does for running? I definitely backed off the intensity toward the end of the workout.

Just got back from 2 days skiing in Southern VT. Yep, the temps were NEGATIVE with the wind chill but it was weird. We skied Christmas day and it felt colder then (although the temps were a little higher). Of course part of it is just being dressed for the occasion but there must be something to do with the relative humidity or maybe Xmas day was windier and I don't remember. Anyway, we had a great time and now my legs are shot.

We are headed to CO at the end of the month to ski for a week so I best get my ski legs back.

Looks like you all had a low key weekend. Hope it was fun. Back to work tomorrow!

Thanks Mike, and Rene, and others who keep reminding my stubborn brain to take my time. I really am trying to stick to the plan and not get ahead of myself. I may only have a window of time to achieve some of these triathlon goals, based on the state of my ever deteriorating knee, so I figure I better try to do it all the right way for a change. That can be easier said tahn done in my case.

Randy

Glad you were able to get in a decent run. These knees are funny things. I sure took it for granted many years ago when I could stack 50-80 mile weeks back to back for months at a time with little to no issue. One more week and I can start running again as well...although only 5 minutes at a time to start, nut I'll take it.

Rested today. The outside of my left foot is paying for running in shoes that don't work. I went for the Brooks Pure Cadence 2 and they didn't agree from the get-go, but I kept hoping I just needed to stretch them out. Nope. Now I have the God awful pain that makes putting my full weight on it girl-scream inducing. Did go and get my beloved Adrenalines, so shouldn't have that problem anymore.

Looking back at photos of myself this time last year I realize I'm not nearly as fit as I was then. Bummer! I have a lot of work to do before Xterra Guam in March.

Happy New Week!

Well my beloved Packers lost, but my super awesome Badger Basketball team won (15-0!) so I'm happy!!!  I much prefer college basketball to football, it moves so much faster.

It's a recovery week for me so a short run is all that's on tap today!

My run mileage is finally starting to get back to normal. Ran 65 minutes this morning with a few pickups. It was 65 when I started running this morning. Temperature is supposed to be in the low 20's tomorrow night. Crazy Texas weather!

Here's a newspaper article that those of you in the Northern states might appreciate. Fast and easy way to get rid of the snow in your yard. My favorite part is what the guy said about the snow. lol..

Fargo Man Arrested For Clearing Snow With Flamethrower

Nick Hirchert on February 18, 2013 - 1:35 pm in Local, News
Maximizing time and efficiency!

Maximizing time and efficiency!

Fargo, ND – Local resident Todd Fox has been detained for “reckless endangerment” and “illegal use of high-powered fire-breathing weaponry” for attacking snow with his flamethrower. Fox reportedly became so fed up with the week-long blowing snow epidemic in his area that he decided to KILL IT WITH FIRE.

The neighborhood was treated with quite a show last night as Fox unleashed an inferno upon the mountainous snow palace that was his front yard. Neighbors to his immediate right and left noticed a bright orange cloud and could hear what they thought was “puff the magic dragon spewing mayhem all over hell,” which prompted one of them to notify police.

Fox stated that he was simply “fed up with battling the elements” and that he did not possess the willpower necessary to move “four billion tons of white bull shi%t .”

Police say that Fox surrendered his efforts immediately upon their arrival and that his front yard “looked like a hydrogen bomb had gone off.” They think he was just happy to be done with snow removal, even if it did mean a trip to jail.

That article is hilarious...that's how I felt back in 2010 when we had the snowmaggedon here on the East Coast.

My first run race isn't at least until the middle of February, so I'm taking it easy with the chest cold.  It's just about gone now.

Good morning all! Looks like we are in for a cold start of the week. Training is pretty light today and tomorrow which is good since work is really busy early this week.  Strength workout and an easy run this evening. Stay warm and be safe folks!

The temps around here are just insane. -10 the other day when I woke up, 48 when I woke up today. You know, just a 60 degree temperature swing in 3 days, no big deal. I finally got some of those Yak Trax so I can run outside in the ice and snow. Went for a 3 mile run yesterday and it was great. I was still slow and hesitant (more for any cars anywhere near me than anything) but it was so nice to get out and run. Looks like it's going to get cold again the next few days so if I can tough out another run in the next 3 days I'd be psyched.

So treadmill for me today after 2 days of skiing.

24 degrees outside today. I took a look at the weather yesterday and basically decided that outdoor anything was banned until at least Thursday. WAY too cold, especially for the gear I got. Wednesday would work, but I'll be in class from 2-5 and It won't be out of freezing until then.

Bryan's rule #1 is cloned from a friend of mine because it's a good one: No outdoor biking when it's 32 or below. I have to modify that for 40 and below for now because I don't have the cycling gear to make it not suck right now.

Anyways, I just got back from the campus gym after an easy 5 mile ride on the stationary bike. First two miles sucked, last three were great! Cycling shorts made it tolerable, but I'm still getting a trainer later this month!

Hope you all are braving the cold pretty well. I gotta go log my split times, eat, then head to class. They didn't cancel here today and almost everyone is livid about it. Not as bad as one of my friend's schools in Nashville though; livid would be speaking of the situation mildly.

Oh, they finally fixed the treadmill after it had been out of order for FOUR months! I'm excited for once in my life about a treadmill LOL!

Stay warm ya'll!

Man I'm jealous of all these temps everyone is talking about (except you Suzy...). We are at -15 windchill right now and headed down from there over the next couple days. One of our companies is a Landscape/Snow removal company and it has been a long weekend since it never stopped snowing. All my guys are beat, even I had to get in a plow truck last night and they never let me plow!!

Looks like more of the same, trainer rides and stay indoors!!!

Stay warm everyone.

Weather...it's been kind of a wild ride here, too.  Snow Thursday night, freezin' cold Friday, nice Saturday, raining Sunday and this morning (48 degrees at 5 a.m.), then we're barely supposed to get above 10 degrees tomorrow.  Then back up into the 50s this weekend.

Should make for a nasty cold/flu season...hopefully I got mine out of the way!

Yup, 50 degrees and pouring rain. It makes to ice underneath very slippery. I'm shuffle along like a 90 year old man. Have no fear tomorrow is supposed to be single digits with wind chills well below zero. So glad I work outside a good portion of the day. Tough 16 miler yesterday, it was supposed to be a fast finish long run with the last 8 fast. I didn't wear the Yak Trakz because I didn't think I would be able to run at pace in them. Big mistake. Shoulder of the road was still covered in snow, the kind of snow that you get when the cars chew it up but it's not warm enough to melt. For you southerners it's kind of like running in beach sand except it's slippery underneath. I did the 1st 8 miles ok but when I tried to run harder I kept getting pain under my knee cap so I decided to just make it an easy run. Unfortunately, the pain got worse as the miles went on. It turned into a walk/jog fest all the way home. Probably the worse run I've had in this whole training cycle. It's a little strange because walking doesn't seem to bother it although today it's a little tender to the touch. Hopefully, I just tweaked something with all the slipping and sliding. Off day today so I'll test it out on the treadmill tomorrow. I'm beginning to think this group is cursed.

What are the ND statutes on the LEGAL USE of high-powered fire-breathing weaponry?

Wow. The last 7 days have been totally crazy for me. First, a last minute trip to the Rose Bowl to watch my Spartans come through. My wife and I were only in California for about 36 hours, but it was well worth the trip.

Back to Michigan, but only home for 12 hours before my daughter and I headed up North for some skiing. Three days turned in to four when the weather that everyone has been talking about blew through. We huddled up and stayed in our cottage for an extra 24 hours. I wasn't sure if we were going to make it home today as it was still a white-out in Northern Michigan, but it looked like it could be days before it really let up. So, five hours of white-knuckle driving later and we are home and I am ready to resume my triathlon training. I have some catching up to do

Glad to see that (almost) everyone in the group is healthy and happy and checking in frequently.

Before I get back to training I am going to have to fire up my flame-thrower and clear the driveway, I'll let you know how it goes.

Blanda--I would shut the running down until you can walk pain free first.  It may seem super cautious, but I've had little things that have turned into BIG THINGS and kept me from running for 6 months.  Hated it.  If biking doesn't hurt, that definitely will help you maintain your running fitness.

Well today was everything they predicted, -45F windchill.  Schools are closed again tomorrow although it is going to be warmer, -35F. Woo-Hoo!

A local coach is holding a USAT certified indoor/outdoor tri in February.   750m swim, 20K CT bike, 5K outdoor run.  I was told it was a qualifier for Nationals.  Does that make sense even if it is a shorter distance?  I plan to give it a go.  I've never done a pool tri.  How should I think about that swim?  As most of you know, I'm not fast, I have one speed, but I really want to win my AG badly. What should  I do between now and then to be ready for that swim?  I feel as if I can gut out the bike and run pretty well.

Blanda, sorry to read about your foot pain, hoping that resolves fast! I enjoyed your pictures and like hearing about your fitness adventures.

Suzy, I hope your husband is doing well and having better pain control.

Randy, I saw that you are adding some strength training to your routine. I am on week six of 18 for my marathon training and thinking of adding 2-3 days of weight training in. Light stuff, maybe 20 minutes. It will be new as a routine thing. Do you (or anyone) have opinions on this at this point in my marathon plan?

Stay warm! Easier for some of you FL folks than the rest of us.

I'm still here. Just shoveling. Next year, I will be buying a snowblower.

I'm going to try and attach a picture - I hope it works. I was riding along today enjoying my indoor trainer ride when I glanced over and saw my reflection in the window. My posture was really bad, I was leaned over the bike and as one spin class instructor would have said - "choking" myself.

By straightening up you can see by the chart what happened to my speed! During the last five minutes of my 45 min trainer ride I turned into Lance Armstrong, sans steroids. For the full explanation - the goal of this workout was to keep the HR in zone 2 and I was real steady between 140ish-144 the entire ride. You can see at the beginning where I had to givershit to get the HR up to zone.

Moral of the story is twofold. Keep good posture, and don't eat yellow snow.

Disclamier: this indoor trainer ride was after dinner and after a short run today so no judging when you see how slow I was! Also, if you think well 22-25 isn't that slow....remember...I'm in Canada. Thats kph....

Just thought others might be interested.

Thank you Suzy and Mary for your foot pain sympathy. I am going to take the rest of the week off and replace with more cycling. I'm a little sad about missing "Ladies Run", but I think they'll understand.

I'm amazed at you all hanging in there with the extreme cold weather. I cannot even handle anything below 70F being a Pacific Islander. I'd like to think that I'd acclimate, but while in Australia's 50F temps, I barely survived. My pre-soccer game warmup was laying under the gear/equipment till a few minutes prior to kickoff, then my warmup went straight to kickoff. I'm a wuss and I know it!

WTH - temps yesterday at 530am on my way to the gym, 33F
On my way to work, 800am 58F
On my way home from work 500pm 37F
At my 5am alarm this am 10F

And the roads suck today so since I HAVE to be somewhere by 815 I decided to skip the pool to make sure I have enough extra driving time. BOOOOO

Jason - I hate those white knuckle drives. We sometimes run into that trying to get home from weekend ski trips to VT. Glad you are home safe.

Stuart - flame thrower, huh?

Blanda - like Suzy said - I'd lay off it. I know it sucks

Nelson - the first thing we bought when we moved into this house in 2004 was a completely over the top too big for this driveway snowblower. I tell you what - we had a blizzard last year and the thing KICKED BUTT!! It's totally my toy - and DH doesn't really know how to start it HEH No judgement on your trainer ride! At least you pedaled!!

I'm stuck in class all day today - not even sure if there's wifi though. Have a good day all!
