Subject: RE: TriAya's Group: SHUT like dog on steak, sorry!

It was back to work today for me.  Luckily I was the only person there today, so I didn't have to work too hard.

I have a question for you guys.  Due to all of your fabulous advice I have been doing a 5 min run/ 2 min walk each time I run.  I am averaging between 9 and 10 minutes a mile.  I ran 3.1 miles in under 29 minutes last week using this method.  I have my first ever 'real' race on 1/1, a 5K, and I'm not sure what I should do.  Should I keep with the 5/2 plan since it's what I've been practicing?  Should I try to stretch to 7/2 or more since it's a race?  Should I forget about the walking and run the whole way??

Help!!  My goal is to beat 30 minutes if at all possible.

There's a few million ways to run a 5K, and since it's your first 'real' race, remember that "she who has the most fun, wins." That said, looks like your time goal is well within reach.

Remember that in a 5K everybody feels like they're dying during the second mile. You're not. You are very well prepared, and it will pass more quickly than you think.

It's a race, and it's short. There's no problem with running through. You could try going out strong, then just easing the run (and/or speeding up the foot turnover) for one minute on a 5:1 (a 5:1 run/easier run interval, essentially). Or, actually do a 5:1 run/walk. If you're still feeling strong a few minutes into the second mile, cut out the easy run or walk interval and just run.

Super good luck! How exciting, and we are all cheering for you!!!

So the massage place I go to called me up around noon with a cancellation....which means I had to skip my intended workout (short run).  It was worth it! It felt great and she told me my IT Band is pulling my left knee ligament VERY tight which is probably the pain I've been having since Thanksgiving.  I have really tight muscles.  Yep.  I scheduled another round in three weeks.

Since tomorrow's scheduled workout is only a short swim, I think I will run first, then swim.  Can't hurt!!  Then I won't feel so guilty. I have been a big slacker lately.....it's harder having hubby around the house this week than I had expected, I can't find my groove to get into my schedule and end up frustrated all the time, and a touch angry which isn't good for anybody.  I could go to the gym tonight but I hate to ruin the massage buzz, and I just ate nachos so I need to digest.  Plus it's rush hour there and it is annoying to park.  So many excuses, listen to me, argh!!!!!

Glad to hear from everyone else on here, though.  It's so helpful having a support group!

The kids badgered me into going to the gym after all.  Once they were there, of course they could only handle about 45 min before freaking out. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.  Got my 23 min in so that is ok.  That leaves a short swim for tomorrow.....

Awww! Well ... you had the great buzz for a while, and as for getting to the gym ... "something is better than nothing."

Hope you get the swim in today!

I had a threesome planned ... no, not the "really good" kind ... an easy hour spin, then later in the day a 30-min run followed by an easy recovery swim.

However, I am feeling under the weather, so I am sucking down the OJ. I *might* spin for 30-60 minutes, or maybe just go home to bed.

Yanti I'm sorry that you''re feeling bad.  Tis the season...

I am leaving this afternoon to go to my parents' lake house in the middle of nowhere...so no Internet for a while.  This, of course, is both good and bad.  I'm going to try my best to exercise while I'm there, but I will be restrained to walking/running.

I'm back! I thought I'd be able to get online more over the holidays, but both my parents' computers were messed up and I'd decided to leave my own at home. I'll never make that mistake again.

I skipped my swim last night because it felt like I was coming down with a cold. I felt pretty guilty at the time, but I'm feeling much better today so looks like I made the right decision. Now I've just got 4,500 yards to go to meet my December goal. Then I start my olympic training plan. Yee!

Sounds like folks had a pretty good holiday. Mine was OK, but I'm so glad it's over. It's great to be back here with you guys.

Found a great way to practice swims with getting kicked in the head lots and swatted. I keep swimming with the 4 older kids and they just pummel me. The 7 year old has got a vicious kick and can swim like a fish so I can't catch her

it's always kind of nice when the holidays are over - there can be a lot of unintended stress!

really glad to hear you're feeling better - there are some nasty colds going around!

I have a LOT of yards to get in for the Dec swim challenge - I missed a week due to my chest cold or whatever it was

Hi everyone!

I have a swimming question.  More of etiquette vs technique.  I've only been swimming in a pool since October.....usually I've been swimming in the lake--however that limits my training to the Seattle summer season which is July thru August.    <<Except for my planned polar bear plunge in only 4 days>>

So, I joined a gym this year and have started the laps--I am happy to see my times improving pretty consistently.  Anyway, my question-->today I was swimming laps in a 5-lane pool, and all lanes were filled.  I'd say two were water exercisers, 1 was a slow guy and another was a guy who was probably around my speed but had a whole pile of equipment with him--paddles, fins, sports drink etc.  So, about 21 minutes into my swim, this young guy asks if he can share my lane.  I told him I only had 2 minutes left and he said that was fine, that he would wait.  If I'd had another 30 minutes to go, how would I go about sharing a lane?  What are the 'rules'?  And why did he choose my lane vs the other swimmers?  Was it that he figured our speed was probably similar, or that I just looked the cutest in my skull and crossbones cap?    Just wondering how that all works.  Especially in the event that I one day need to find a lane to share-I need to know how to do that, as well.

Thanks!!!  Have a great night.  We actually got both kids to bed early for a change and are going to watch Blade Runner on the new 42" HDTV we got today.  Popcorn's poppin'....talk to you all later!

You have a skull and crossbones cap? Coooool.

Etiquette dictates you do try to choose someone closest to your speed. If you're "crashing" someone's lane, wait until they stop at the wall, and say something like, "May we split the lane?" [I'll try to link to my blog entry for what to do if they protest ... ] Then each of you takes a side.

If they never stop, I might try sticking my hands in the water as they approach and waving them around. Or just hop in and hope they notice and take a breath.

If there's two in the lane, hop in and somehow let them both know you all need to start circle swimming. It's just like driving: stick to the right side of the lane, always. Go up on the right; come back on the right.

In a 50m pool, you pretty much just hop on in.

First things first - a new 42" HDTV??? so jealous - ENJOY!

funny thing I've discovered over the past couple of years is that pool etiquette seems to vary somewhat from pool to pool

strictly speaking, from an etiquette standpoint, swimmers will/should choose a lane that has swimmer(s) that are closest to their speed and skill level (the fact that you are super cute in your skull and crossbones swim cap is a bonus! )

in my pool, and because I am very spoiled (I hardly ever have to share a lane) on the occaisons where I have to share, we split the lane in half, each staying on our own side of the lane - this is ok for 2 swimmers, but no more

circle swim works well if there are multiple people in a lane - circle swim is up one lane, back in the other, it's pretty important that the swimmers have a pretty equal pace and know how to judge their speed/workout with the other swimmers in the lane

it doesn't sound like you run into many situations where the circle swim will be necessary, so this is probably enough for now

Welcome back, Erin!

Poor Hector--keep taking care of yourself, that's the best kind of training for you right now!

Shawn--yep, excellent OWS practice, especially chasing the fast 7-year-old who might kick ya in the face .

Well done, Will!

Speaking of swimming, here's the link of what I do if someone doesn't want to share a lane:

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/index-weekly.asp?memberid=57784&year=2007&month=12&day=11

I'm not saying that's the best idea ... it's just what I do. Innocent

I'm nursing an injury in addition to the cold--I have a pinched nerve in my neck and have got some bad muscle spasms and shoulder and arm pain. Not a lot of functionality. Dear Beth has been cheering me up!

I was going to do a mini-article (like the recovery and base ones) on mental training, and now's the perfect time to put it together AND practice it, since I'm kind of laid up!

Sounds like you made the right choice - a massage sounds wonderful and enjoy your time with your family - you'll have plenty of time to workout!

my personal philosophy is never ever kill a massage buzz!

enjoy your workout tomorrow!

I'm eating my oranges and drinking my Thera-Flu, I still feel like crap. Maybe I need a warm shot of whiskey or something. Either way today is a blockbuster movie day for me on the couch.

oh no Hector

I hope you start feeling better soon!

Oh no, Yanti! That sucks about the pinched nerve! So painful, ugh.

Re: pool etiquette. My pool's pretty busy so I almost always have to share a lane (fortunately I've figured out when the busiest times are, so I can usually avoid the hours when everyone's circle swimming -- man, I hate circle swims). I usually pick one of the slow or medium lanes, sit at the edge and dangle my feet in the water to get the other swimmer's attention. That tends to do the trick. If the other swimmer ignores me, yep, I jump right in and take whichever side of the lane is open. One thing I hate when someone's trying to share a lane I'm already in, is when s/he insists on getting my verbal permission. If we make eye contact and I nod at you, that means I'm cool with you joining me. But for some reason some people insist on, like, tapping me on the shoulder and asking, which is annoying if I'm in the middle of a timed set. There's such a thing as being too polite!
