How was your race, Sal?

Anyone training today??  What are you up to?  I taught a spin class and did serious hills and AT intervals.  Tough ride but the class was packed with great energy so it was fun.  Hope everyone's having a great day.  Be safe tonight.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Race was O.K.  I slept on and off yesterday morning until 1pm.  Wasn't feeling the greatest.  Ran with Cindy for about 100 yds, and started to feel a little better and took off.  She gave me a hard time about that, because I told her I might run the race WITH her.  Felt o.k., but DEFINITELY knew I couldn't push it...(my goal was to not throw up )...course was beautiful, though.  1 loop around Lake Calhoun (lake was frozen over of course).  Trail was covered with about 1/2 inch of snow.  There were about 4 people kite boarding on the lake.  Ran 8:33s, so not bad for feeling sick.  Walked back and found Cindy and ran in the last 400 yds with her...

welcome to the group Brett.

Thanks!  Appreciate it!

Welcome Brett and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

(we've got another troublemaker in the group)...sorry I didn't call this weekend.  We took my dad to urgent care...he's sick too, but at 73, colds affect him more than they do me...

So, we gonna race at Lifetime?  Any bets this year?

Noz - 2007-12-31 1:01 PM happy new year everyone, let's have a great 2008!  (ooh, that rhymes.  that is now copyrighted by freshwater productions, a divison of noz inc.  all transcriptions, notes in blog, or utterances at parties without the expressed written concent of noz is going to happen and there is nothing i can do to stop it.)

I was scratching my head for a while thinking 'that doesn't rhyme.'  It would have to be:

Happy New Year everyone
Let's have a great 2001

Oh...I guess great and 8 rhyme...carry on...

Well, the last workout for 2007 is in the books for me!  YES!!!   Now it's time to get really serious!

What's everyone got planned for the New Year?   I'll do my traditional New Years Day run.  Typically about a 5k but I may decide to push a little further tomorrow, after all it's a NEW YEAR!

Be safe everyone and have a happy new year!

Let's see...take steady doses of Mucinex every 4 hours, then leave on a flight to Chicago...yes, bummer...I have some project work to do early tomorrow...

Ok Sparco and Milaminute... Can I play -

I should probably be a mentor, but I need some extra motivation....

Just let me know --- I know your group is technically full...

welcome brett!  i look forward to hearing perspectives of a race director

Thanks, NOZ!  I'm looking forward to your expert swimming advice (seriously!  ) I'm stuck in the 2:00/100 rut and can't seem to break out of it!

Hey Noz...don't give him too much swim advice...I may have to race against him this summer...(who said that?)...

Item #1:  I would like to publicly thank Sal for bringing back my favorite avatar in honor of the run challenge

Item #2:  Great job on the run, Sal, especially for not feeling 100%!  I hope Cindy had fun, too.

Hey Noz--

Disregard the man behind the orange muscle shirt and sunglasses ---  I'll take any expert advice you can give.     ---  I BEAT him at Lifetime last time -- got to keep up the record, and he's getting too fast!!       (Sorry Sal....    )  -- Yes it's true, I did beat Sparky at lifetime -- he got even though -- he KICKED my TAIL BIG TIME at the Salt Lake Marathon ( by something like an hour and 15 minutes --- pretty scarry -- right??? )

I sense a gauntlet being thrown here -- do you???

Oooohhhhh... I like it, I LIKE it!!!!   But, ummm... let's not disregard the avatar.  I don't want it to go away .  So, Sal... what say you?  Oh wait... he is busy with his Mucinex and business trip.  Keep up with the smack talk... he can't respond.

First workout of the year down... great 1000 yard swim (I usually swim in a 25 meter pool so whenever I swim at the 25 yard pool I get excited about my times ) and a naked Z2 run (2.25 miles).  Had a bad calf cramp at the end of the run.  I don't recommend it.  It hasn't gone away yet but I'm still going with the whole cramp concept...

Went to ride with the tri club this morning. Boy Genius left his bike shoes on the kitchen counter.

Went home got shoes, drove to Back Bay and rode by my lonesome. 35.85 miles to help burn off the calories from last night.

Well, my first workout of the year is in the books.  3.43 miles on my feet (and if you want a 'sob story' it was into the wind and uphill both ways....  (ok just on the return, but I need the emotional boost!    )

Kidding aside, what do you mean by a naked Z2 run???

Hate it when that happens --- nice ride to make up for it though 35 miles --- that's 65% of my goal for the entire month -- you're an animal ---- sure hope it's warm where you are!

I am in So. California, so it is warmer than most of the country, although riding a bike in shorts and short sleeves in 50 degree weather seems cool enough to me.

I think I should just leave you wondering on that!

When you hear people refer to running or riding "naked" around here and they are not referring to an actual nude event (yeah, there are clothing optional 5Ks and triathlons), it means without the use of technology... HRM, bike computer, GPS, etc.  In my case today I ran without wearing my heart rate monitor because I am taking some medication that can cause my HR to be somewhat erratic so I wanted to run by rate of perceived exertion without worrying about any spikes in the data on my HRM.

Nice job on the run in those tough conditions .

Heh.  Boy Genius.  Priceless .  Not to worry... I think we've all had those moments and I now keep a lot of my stuff in my car to avoid that.

That reminds me... I showed up to teach a spin class recently wearing flip flops and having forgotten my mtb shoes.  Oops.

Looks like you pulled off a great ride despite the rough start!

givemashot - 2007-12-31 10:03 PM So Brett...where abouts in Utah did you live? Any insider info on which tri club would be good to join? I'm very green. So much so I'm pretty much right off the couch still (even though I've been trying to get up for 2 months...)

I lived in Saratoga Springs near Lehi.  I only know of 2 "organized" clubs, the Timp Tri Club in American Fork and the Desert Sharks based somewhere in Salt Lake.  Desert Sharks is the biggest of the two.  I know the leadership team at Timp Tri very well, as my race production company (when I had owership) managed their annual Icebreaker Triathlon.  They are a great bunch.

I don't know many of the Desert Sharks, but the few I've met seem to be really good folk!

Hope that helps!   I was wondering where in Utah that you might be.

I'm in South Jordan, at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. It turns out I know someone who's in the Desert Sharks. Actually, I think she's currently the pres. I had no idea she tri'd until a few weeks ago, though. Weird.

Taking your advice to join a January challenge. 50 miles running - thru the snow and ice. Set the bar a little high (ran around 40 miles in both Nov. and Dec.) but I'm ready to do this. Bring it on!

Awesome!  I haven't looked at the running team threads yet... which team are you on?  Brett, Sal and I are on team "Who's Your Marmadaddy?" .  Anyone else doing a challenge this month?

I decided to get in on the challenge this month. I made my run goal a modest 30 miles Since I'll be playing hopstoch with the international dateline and  time zones this month. due to going home for some R and R.

Congrats to the challenge team joiners.   I hope you are on "Who's Your Marmadaddy" though if your running for distance.   Otherwise, well, we'll have to beat up on you by kicking your teams tail      (Evil Grin)

The only challenge for me this month is just trying to stay on a consistent schedule.  I am mostly back to normal after a fun filled New Year's Eve/early morning celebration.  Got in my run and swim today.  My son's getting the ear tubes and adenoids removed in the morning.  So I'll be comforting him tomorrow, but that is more fun than training any day.  Hoping to get back in the gym on Friday.

Heh.  My goal is less than that and I have no valid excuse.  Oh wait, other than that my body doesn't always like to cooperate but that's a minor detail .  However, doesn't really matter.  The challenges are great because they allow participants to define the challenge for themselves by setting their own goals.  I purposely did not choose a bike goal because it's really not a challenge for me to get time in the saddle.  Heck, my bike challenge is more like stop riding!
