Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() James, while I totally agree with others on kicking your butt, I would actually advise on taking 2 weeks off and not even thinking about any workouts. This constant discipline can be a serious mental drain and some break should help a lot. A break. Conscious break, meaning you are the boss and you decided not to do anything for say 2 weeks, not that you lost your motivation. I heard that Scott Jurek, one of the world's most famous ultramarathoners does exactly that. A 12k run this morning in 1:03. Andy S 6/B 9/R 6 Rest 2 Total 21 26:28:53 |

![]() | ![]() James Two things similar with me. 1) huge recent increase in work responsibilities and 2) recently completed big race. The second can cause a big letdown. The first provides a real reason to question the training time. So I may advise taking off a few weeks as well, but I would try to remember, At least my case, I am more productive at work when I work out. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nihao everyone! Happy Birthday Samy and hope you had a great one! Jim, hang in there buddy and agree with Mark, take a few days off to recharge and get your mojo back! After a long trip I finally arrived today morning in Hangzhou and just came back from a nice 1hr run next to the Quintang River http://connect.garmin.com/activity/233999113 Now time to hit the pubs before my summit tomorrow! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Needed a rest day earlier than planned. Had zero mojo and listened to my body. Jim - While I would normally seize the opportunity to give a kick in the rear to a fellow attorney, opt for the mental and physical rest as needed. As you train more, you know when your body and mind need a break. Also, look at it this way, take the rest now and by the time the holidays roll around you will be bad in the routine and mitigate the effects of holiday eating.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Birthday Samy, welcome to the age group. I decided I need to reboot and take a mental break, and do whatever seems fun at the time. The way this next month is going to shake out, I need my workouts to be fun and without obligation. I don't have anys serious races coming up until February when I have a 15 mile trail run, other than that a couple of Holiday 5k's. I am also breaking out the "don't eat like a pig" diet. Thanks for your support and help putting things back into focus.

First time swimming after trying my wetsuit, and can see how swimming with a wetsuit constantly could lead to bad form when without it (i.e. letting the wetsuit do the work - like lift your legs - instead on you focusing on form). Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 75 mile ride today, was hoping to go longer but I had a service guy at the house this morning who took longer than I was hoping for. Got out late then had to get home before the kids got off the bus. Then got out for a 5 mile run this evening while the kids were in swim team practice. I'm not sure what hurts more, pushing the pace on a run or sitting on those darn wooden bleachers around the pool. Either way my back is killing me! On the plus side, I've gotta say I'm just overwhelmed with pride for my two boys, ages 6 & 9 who decided to join the swim team this year. Seeing them in the pool, with jammers, swim cap and goggles, actually swimming with their faces in the water and breathing and the whole deal, is just so absolutely awesome! I told my 9 year old that in a couple years, he'll be tapping my toes, hoping to pass his slow dad! Andy S 6/B 10/R 7 Rest 2 Total 23 31:21:03

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did a runch today and a swim in the 50M outdoor pool with the Super Jesus lizards at SMU. I'm recovering much faster from the workouts and the HR is dropping quick when I lower the intensity, signs of fitness. Andy S 6/B 10/R 7 Rest 2 Total 23 31:21:03

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 10 miler this morning that took a while to get into the groove. At about mile 6 things started to feel better - HR settled in as I was getting faster. Solild negative splits over the second half of the run. I find that when I run really early (hit the road pre-5am) it takes a while for my HR to settle in. Maybe its the coffee induced shock to the system. Andy S 6/B 9/R 6 Rest 2 Total 21 26:28:53 |

![]() | ![]() I'm still resting. Bit of a strained right calf from the marathon. I, like Jackie, am reading Luke Humphrey's new book on the Hanson marathon training program. At the end, there is a small section on marathon recovery, and he basically recommends two weeks of no running at all. I've done two small runs, but nothing else. We'll see how the calf goes before starting up again. |

You can stay away from the bike and relatively retain some fitness but the swim mojo goes away quickly. Learn to love it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jackie & Chris: I'd be interested to learn what you glean from the book and Chris what you gleaned from completing his training plan. I read the sample from the book that was on his blog - very interesting. I also downloaded his half marathon training plan. Good amount of weekly mileage for a half marathon but 80% at "easy" pace and running 6 days a week. The key word being "easy". As long as I am healthy I will have ramped up my runs per week by mid-december and start run training again for an April half! Love any thoughts or wisdom you guys have your readings and experience. Jackie - are you doing a Hanson's marathon plan? -Mitch |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got in an hour on the trainer this afternoon then a few miles on the treadmill at the Y. Then realized I forgot my darn goggles so I skipped the swim, will try and get that in tomorrow morning instead. First thing I did when I got home was throw my old pair in my gym bag so I'll always have an extra just in case I forget my good pair. Ernesto, double check your totals, mine got dropped somewhere, I think yours may not be accurate either. Andy S 6/B 11/R 8 Rest 2 Total 25 33:01:03 Edited by Climbinggonzo 2012-10-17 4:42 PM |
