Hi everyone. I got in a nice swim/bike brick today. I spent over an hour in the open water and then a little over an hour on my bike. The lake was perfect today and I figure I did 6 X 400 meters. For the last two, I put on my wet suit top and felt quite comfortable with my stroke. I was really relaxed by then and the calm water helped too. I'm now leaning towards wearing the top for the race, but will likely hold off on making a decision until I do a warm-up on the day of the race.

Thanks to everyone for the "good luck" comments. I am doing this race because I've been motivated by what everyone else in this mentor group has accomplished so far.

MDHillSlug - 2009-08-16 8:26 AM As the day wore on yesterday my feet started feeling worse and worse to the point where they ended up hurting more than ever before (the right heel more than the left forefoot). I definitely won't be running again this week and I don't know what I'll be able to do at all between now and my tri. I'm already scheduled to see my foot doc the last week of the month but I think I'll call tomorrow and see if I can move it up.

Yes, I can still bike and swim (although finding an open county pool to swim at is currently a challenge).

I guess I'll be well rested for the Oly.

good luck...quick healing and no more pain thoughts are heading your way! take care girl...thanks for the update...why are all  your pools closed?

The pool near work has been closed since April for some major work and won't reopen until October or so. The other indoor pools are starting into their yearly cycle of 2 week closings for maintenance. The pool near home is closed from now through the end of the month. I'll be at an outdoor pool for the next two weeks.

I wish mine was indoor...It is cold here this morning and the thought of getting in a pool outside gives me the shivers.... but will go when it warms up some. Hope your foot feels better soon. Have a good swim.

I hated the pool today. I don't think I'm going back there. Either I'll find another pool or take some time off

what happen...is it the pool? the people? or both?

MDHillSlug - 2009-08-17 1:09 PM Julee,

How far are you from Livermore? There's a really good chance that I'll be in the Livermore area from October 15-18. I'd love to meet!

its only about 45 to an hour away depending on traffic...sounds great! hoping I will be here and not in Texas...my dad is not doing well and that is when my work season seems to peter out some...so I may head home around then...but may have to put it off a day or two if it means we can hang out! is this business or pleasure bringing you this way??? and that is around the time of my half marathon..cant remember the dates! hope we do get to meet!

My partner needs to be there for business on that Monday.

sounds great...October is nice in Livermore...hope I will be around then so we can hang out.

lufferly - 2009-08-17 8:09 PM Did someone say something about cold weather ...  Julee, can you bring some of that with you as well as the rain when you come this way?

Cheri, glad that Claudette wasn't any worse for you.  That is the kind of rain we need here.

Nicole, sorry that your foot isn't feeling any better.  Were you able to get back in to the doctor?

Dan, good luck to you this weekend!

Karen, hang in there.  You are going to have a wonderful new home!

Hope everyone is doing okay.  My son is playing flag football for the first time, after playing baseball for 4 years, and his first practice was today ... school starts on Monday ... and the days are getting shorter ... guess my summer break is just about over.  This has been the hottest summer that I can remember in a long time, and I'm ready for the cooler weather.

sorry...didnt mean to rub it in! hope it cools down for you soon...still no rain???

swam today...and now I have to go and eat...super hungry...swam a little under 2 hours! 30 minutes were with fins. Felt soo good to swim...dont know why it is so hard to get there!???

That's a lot of swimming. No wonder you were hungry. Sounds like you need to get out there more often.

that or drink a protein drink as soon as I get home...this will fill me up and keep me from wanting to eat everything in site...HOPEFULLY, anyways!

It was the pool, the people, and the facilities.

  • Pool: the few lap lanes go across the pool down at one end, next to the diving board; lots of unidentified floating (and sinking) objects in the water; gross!
  • People: no one seemed to give a crap that someone was trying to swim laps. People would just appear standing in my lane, swimming under me, etc.
  • Facilities: just didn't care for the changing and showering areas.

There's another outdoor pool that I'll try on Thursday but it's less convenient to work and home. I'll be glad when September starts and my indoor pool is back in service.

Great job Julie!  Please don't overdo, though.  Follow the plan and don't increase your mileage too drastically.  You don't want to get injured -- I'm sure you do want to run that race with your daughter!   I left you an inspire with some "answers" for you.

Well, no break in the weather yet, but we are supposed to have a "cool front" come through for the weekend and at least drop the humidity.  Looks like it actually might be down in the 70s for my group run on Saturday.  I just try to remind myself that all this running in the heat surely must be making me stronger?

I feeling rather down right now. There are several different things swirling madly in my head but among them is that I see the end of my tri season in 3 weeks and I'm feeling like this season has been a big disappointment.

I started the season in May with the Kinetic Sprint; overall it was a good race but I was disappointed with my swim. June was no tri because of my big charity ride. July was the Philly Women's tri that was changed to a duathlon; it ended up as hugely stressful experience for an overpriced race that was a huge disappointment (for $100 do you know what we got in our race packet? 2 lip balms!). This month (Sunday) is my Iron Girl relay tri. Here I feel like I've "wasted" my August event on a race that's just too expensive for 20 minutes of swimming and is keeping me from doing a "real" triathlon this month. But, of course, that's all moot because I can't run now anyway. So, in 3 weeks I have my last event of the season, my first Olympic distance triathlon. I set up my schedule to build up to this and I can't run, haven't run in 3 weeks. There's no way that I'm not doing the race but I have no idea what I will do when I'm done with the ride and lace on my running shoes. Maybe 6 weeks off of running will allow me to limp through the run, maybe I'll walk the whole thing, maybe a run/walk combo. Who the hell knows. All I know is it is not going to be what I envisioned months ago. And right now I know I'm not quite emotional equipped to go with the flow and accept things as they are.

Curious ~~ how many usually show up for your group run? is this thru a running club?

Hang in there Nicole....this has been a tough year for you...but you know the old saying...next year is a whole new season~! Try and find some of the positives of all the training you did this year...and the races. Write them down. I bet you will be pleasantly surprised that you have many to jot down. You have come a long way this year. I have seen you become a fish and improve your swimming magnificently...your biking leaves me in the dust....as does your new bike you got this season. You are really fast running when you are not injured...I would never want to compete against you!!!! remember when my knee was injured and I thought I was done! I was sooo down then. I  had trained sooo hard and was unable to do many of the triathlons I had signed up for....it did take a long time to heal and I thought of throwing in the towel.....but Im hooked! plus, this year I did NO triathlons! how lame is that! done a few runs, century rides, one biathlon, and a couple mtn bike races.

Hang in there Nicole....the longer you can stay off your foot and let it heal I think the quicker you can fully heal and come back strong....do you have crutches? and does the doctor have you icing it? elevating it? I know you said your doctors appt is Thursday is that today Thursday or next week Thursday?....GOOD LUCK and let us know what he says....remember to try and find some positive.

Believe you me...I know that can be hard and sometimes impossible...just hope it will help you to see some sunshine in your grey time! {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}

Nicole, I can hear how disappointed you are.  But you need to realize that these are all things beyond your control.  You made choices at the beginning of the season with a success-oriented schedule.  Unfortunately, you can't schedule injuries.  But you are doing the right thing, taking care of your feet and letting them heal.  You aren't risking further injury by pushing when you shouldn't.  You are using your head, but right now you are thinking with your heart.  I believe sooner or later (but hopefully sooner!) your heart will understand that this season was a learning season for you.  Maybe you can think about what you have learned?  And how about your successes -- you've really come a long way with your swimming, and of course your biking has always been spectacular.  So get healthy and then tackle that run!

I hope you don't think this is too sappy!

Right now I'm just not open to the positive. I know it won't last, but right now it hurts.

My foot doc appointment is next Thursday. No crutches. I ice as often as I can remember, most often while I'm sitting at work. I do 600mg ibuprofen 3 times a day. My feet still hurt.

Believe you me...I know that can be hard and sometimes impossible...just hope it will help you to see some sunshine in your grey time! {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}

Right now I'm just not open to the positive. I know it won't last, but right now it hurts.

My foot doc appointment is next Thursday. No crutches. I ice as often as I can remember, most often while I'm sitting at work. I do 600mg ibuprofen 3 times a day. My feet still hurt.

try and ice as much as possible! really does help! elevate too!

stay positive...and know that we are thinking of you and hoping for a swift recovery! keep us posted!
