Long run today (though not as long as planned due to this crappy cold..), maybe a swim if my lungs feel up to it
100 mile bike tomorrow with a 40' run
Sunday either another 40-50 on the bike or a swim/run, I'll decide when I wake up

I'm on day 7 of this chest cold and am still dragging. I've barely done any training this week and feel pretty miserable. I hope I'm at the end of it and will be better after the weekend

Question about LP transportation/travel: Is anyone traveling with family or an SO and planning to go separately? My BF is coming, but isn't going to take a bunch of days off work and doesn't really need to be there to watch me check in and do warm up swims, so we're trying to figure out how to get there separately but not have two cars. I can either try to get their Thursday on my own and have him bring my bike Friday, or I can take the car Thursday and he can get there Friday. So my question is, is there any way at all for someone to get there without driving? It's not like IMWI where he can just fly in so we're really struggling with that.

Anyone want to pick me up in NYC on their way?

7hr bike with a friend, going to hit lots of climbing, probably about 90-100 miles. the first 3 hours will be with a friend, so I have no idea how hard/easy we'll, 2nd phase will be all on my own, so.. who knows.. FIB brick, and Sunday I have 2 runs scheduled.

I'll be up there this year to volunteer in the Men's Changing tent.

Anyone know if the swim course will be open on Saturday, the day before the race?

I'm sure it's been covered somewhere in this thread, but someone just reassure me that aero trumps weight even in LP.  In other words, I should definitely put the wheelcover on my 82mm rim even though I have to "climb" all day, right?

The consensus answer is 'yes' aero trumps weight at LP.

BTW, latex tubes are no less durable than butyl rubber Josh. They do bleed air a bit faster and are very hard to find. Otherwise they are as good AND much better than butyl tubes

Just curious, why are they better? How much difference will they make to a slowpoke like me.

Yep - I was referring to the the race tires... 2 strikes against me in recent days for unclear writing!

Because they are move flexible, they lower the crr (coefficient of rolling resistance) of the whole tire/tube combo.  They conform to miniscule road imperfections instead of lifting bike + you over them.  Times a few hundred thousand imperfections, and we are talking seconds to maybe a minute or two over a 112 mile ride.

So, it won't make my 7+ a 6:20 - not worth it - I need a magic bullet dammit

a 75 Kg rider with avg Coefficient of Drag of 0.5 and rolling resistance of 0.004 (i.e. continental GP 4000 with butyl tubes) holding 180 watts over a relatively flat 112 mile course will net you a 5:55 hr bike split.

If you keep the same tires but use latex tubes it can save you around ~6 minutes, and if you change to tires with lower Crr and using latex tubes it can save you ~12 min.

Not bad, you get "free" speed (or more precisely cheap) for around 100.00 USD investment. AGers can gain up to 20-30 min of free speed on their final split if they would consider speed extraction; that is how can you save time and/or go faster with same effort level by just paying attention of the details and making minor tweaks.

Stuff you should/could consider are:
  • Bike position, better CdA = free speed
  • Better tires/tubes, lower Crr = free speed
  • nutrition/flat kit placement, lower CdA = free speed
  • stay aero most of the time = less energy used (kJ)
  • Bike maintenance:
  1. adequate gearing - avoid power spikes, save energy (kJ)
  2. lubed-clean chain/cassette, tune up, etc = free speed
  • improve transitions, avoid wasting time = free speed for same effort level
  • run the tangents = less energy wasted (kJ)

Me, the wife, 2 daughters.

Plus my parents, brother, two sisters and their fams, maybe a SIL who will also do nanny duty to help out the wife.

They're all making a big family vacation out of it.  Some staying by Lake George, some by Lake Saranac.  Race day will be based out of our room/suite at the Golden Arrow.

Talk about pressure to finish on my feet!

In order to get my family to come watch the Ironman, Ryan (yeats) and I are getting married the Wednesday after, so they HAVE to come watch the race! It will be both of our parents and brothers/sisters with their families, plus some aunts and cousins that will be there cheering all day on Sunday. I know, it's a pretty sneaky way to have a rock-star support squad!! The whole week will be a big family vacation, which makes me even MORE excited for July!! One month!! EEeek!

OK. THAT is SO great! Congratulations! What a great way to celebrate a wedding by doing an IM (and vice versa, I suppose!).

I'm dragging bringing my bf, mom, dad, sister and brother-in-law. We're all staying at a B&B in Keene. Really looking forward to it!

Also, while we're on the topic...is there a planned BT get-together?

Very cool..great way to have family gather, be spectators, and be there for two big events in your life.

In 2008 two local pro triathletes got married on the beach of Mirror Lake in the week before IMLP and she won the women's race a few days later.
