I finished my first race and really enjoyed it. I had no expectations, started in the back of the pack and finished in the middle (30:27) with energy left in the tank.

Looking forward to doing this again soon.

That's the important part for sure! Great job, especially for your first one

I do have one question.   During my ride I was passed by 4 guys riding together. I heard them talking behind me but I did not get a  "Passing on the left"  They just shot by me and did not say a word.   Is "Passing on the left" a triathlon thing only?

I don't think it is, I think it's common courtesy. That was pretty rude of them not to warn you.

Went on a long ride today, which was great.  Except when I ran over a squirrel that darted in front of me. That was scary, but somehow the squirrel was okay...

b2673ad - 2010-07-03 11:48 AM Hello

I am back and had a good swim-ride today.

My heel is better but I think it will take another 2 or 3 weeks before I try running.

The weather here in SC is cooler over the last 3 days so it was very nice outside this morning.

I do have one question.   During my ride I was passed by 4 guys riding together. I heard them talking behind me but I did not get a  "Passing on the left"  They just shot by me and did not say a word.   Is "Passing on the left" a triathlon thing only?

Everyone enjoy the 4th

Do a random act of kindness to someone on active duty or a veteran.  Say hello, buy them a drink. Just
tell the guys & girls thanks!

Kevin

Glad the heel is doing better.

Most of the time if I'm in a group and we're conversing or being pretty loud, I skip the "on the left" too, unless it seems the person in front of me is not good at holding their line. It's similar to "Car Back/Up" and the hand wave to debris in the road... more of a common courtesy than a rule of thumb.

I always manage to hit birds. I've had a couple of birds fly into my front wheel. Squirrels, not so much.  When I was in high school drivers ed, our teacher gave us a dollar for every animal we hit instead of swerving to dodge... oh the good old days.

Wow, Training has really started to pick up this last week or two, and will continue until the end of August. Trying to re-arrange things to work around Work / Racing / Weddings (silly friends in love...don't they know it'll never last! :> is starting to take it's toll.

I remember I used to look forward to my weekends because they were a break from training... now I dread them because they are when my longest sessions are haha.

Hope everyone else is getting in some quality work!

Good luck rearranging things.  You do seem to have an extraordinary number of weddings this summer, they always seem to happen in waves for some reason . Training here is going fine, well hopefully, spent the last couple days laid up with some sort of stomach thing.  Back to work now.

Looked at my schedule for the next couple months, and between trips with friends, races and a trip to Alaska, I have something going on every weekend until my last race of the season on October 2nd.  Not sure how much I like being that booked up... oh well, that's the life of a triathlete right?

Well, tomorrow is exactly one year from the day that I did my first Race.

I'll be doing it again tomorrow... against my better judgement (really shouldn't be "racing" this close to my A-Race) Plan to really try and make a statement as to how I've improved over a year. Hopefully things will go well.

Good Training and Racing everyone!

What can you do in a year?

Well... I went from 9/16 in the beginner division of my first sprint with a time of 49:06 last year.

This year I finished in 39:40 and got first in my age group.

Just to show that hard work is more important than good genes.

Awesome job!!!

Coming off a recovery week with some seriously painful hill climbs over the weekend. Back into the training routine! I have a sprint this weekend in Leadville, CO which is at 10,000ft, should be pretty interesting. My goal is to be able to breathe the whole time

Ouch, good luck! When I've been in Vail, it was an effort to even snowboard!

Alright guys, how's everyone doing? Been kinda quiet in here

I got a 4500m swim in this morning, and left feeling good. I've also finally been able to re-adjust to breathing bi-laterally (after clavicle surgery I was a righty only) which has really boosted my confidence in the water and even sped me up a little (very little)

Sprint #3 down! Think I cut my time about 7 minutes from the last one, probably all in the swim. I swam the whole freestyle (and not backstroke!) so I met my goal. Race report to come.

Race report if anyone's interested: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

I actually cut my last sprint time by 16 minutes! Amazing what not having a panic attack in the water will do for your time. But I was still at the bottom of the pack- the ladies here were FAST!

Great Job Emily! Especially with the swimming, huge improvements!

This weekend has been insane for me. I am just now able to sit down it feels like.

Friday, hour and a half bike (on the rollers! :/) before work, work, come home, get dressed, rehearsal for my buddy's wedding... come home and get in bed about 10:30.

Saturday, up at 5:30 to go swim, then I realized I need black slacks for the Wedding!!! Dillards had me covered though (although I had to wait til they opened) then off to the wedding for pictures from 12 - 3. After that was the reception and... Oh dear lord... I've never been to a Jewish reception before (the bride was 100% Jewish) and wow... they put us Irish folks to shame. I've also never been hoisted up in a chair before (scary... all those drunk people) or given a best man speech where people afterwards told me it was "too PG-13" for the couple... Tried to sneak out early (they had a D.J. and open bar, which I refrained from...mostly...) but didn't make it home until 11:30p.m.!!! (When the Marriott kicked us out! err...asked us politely to disperse)

Tried to sleep, but absolutely couldn't make myself. Finally got up and did some laundry dishes. Fell asleep at 2:45 or so... alarm went off at 4:30. Breakfast, some coffee, and off to the Amica 19.7 TN Championships...

...Had about the kind of race you'd expect after a weekend like that. Still managed to (somehow) come in 3rd in my AG. Now... rest and relaxation until tomorrow.

There's my wild story for the week haha

And of course, the Race Report (a downer...)

You're a machine. I would have slept through and missed the race after a weekend like that.

Wow, I don't know that I could have raced the day after a wedding.  Your Saturday night makes mine look tame, and I thought I had it rough on Sunday morning... ha Good job!!!

Rode 60 miles with some decent sized hills thrown in there on Saturday morning with a friend training for a century.  Then drove over to a celebration for a friend's engagement Saturday night. Avoided most of the drinking, but still stayed out until past 2.

Woke up at 5am to drive to my race, and even with tons of stretching couldn't get my legs loosened out.  Interesting race to say the least.  Somehow still pulled out an age group win, and 4th woman. Really gorgeous location for a race, even if the altitude thins the air. Got the Race Report up here.

You too can have them! www.linsocks.com They have awesome (!!!!) socks.  If you've used compression socks before, their current ones are a little lower in compression, but they tell me they'll have higher compression soon. Personally I think they are plenty strong enough now. (And if you like anything there, be sure to use "christina" as a coupon code for 10% off!)

Did my first Time Trial tonight.

8mile/19:20 so a 24.8 mph average.

Still, got smoked by the "real cyclists" that were there. Although afterwards I was asking around for tips and it seems I totally botched my warmup by letting my HR drop back down to close to resting before starting. Oh well, next time!

That is so cool!  How did you find out about that? Was it through a bike shop or something? You had a killer time, can't wait to see what you do next time!
