Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the advice all. After yesterday's run, the same stomach bother happened, this time there was no nauseau..my stomach just "ached"...there is something I am eating that just does NOT agree with high intensity running..I need to figure it out and get rid of it..well at least on days I have "high intensity running" scheduled. Yesterday I went out and bought a book on nutrition and endurance athletes. Yes I'm a dork, but I ALWAYS rely on books and other's expertise first, THEN I can go out and expirement for myself. I know about general nutrition and the like, but dont know much on nutrition AND endurance sports. This book should be interesteing, its sections include "Your Daily Performance Diet", "Your Training Diet" and then "Sport Specific Nutritional Guidelines (Triathlon; Road, Mountain, Track Cycling, Cyclo Cross; Distance Running; Swimming; Rowing; Adventure Racing). It also had an entire section on "gastrointestinal distress" and running. Apprantly, out of running, biking and swimming..running is the one that will most likely cause GI distress..and what you eat before, during, and after your run is key as to how you will feel. So hopefully, after reading it, I will be able to develop a better eating plan for myself and we will get rid of these stomach issues once and for all. |

Running just shakes things around more I think. That's why a lot of people schedule the high intensity for early morning so there's not a lot in their stomach. As far as what you ate before you ran: Breakfast: English Muffin (with a bit of butter and Jam), one egg, tea (I cant each much more that early in the morning) Snack (about 30 - 45 mins before working out): Pria Nutrition Bar If it was a whole wheat muffin, that would do it for me (the more processed the better before running I've found - white bread great, wheat bread, I feel sick.) Possibly the egg as well. And, maybe the pria nutrition bar, depending on what's in it. You've probably noticed that I've just said no to your whole morning. Like I said, I've found I'm good to go with a Clif Bar pre-intensity but a LOT of other stuff that you would think would be ok makes me feel ill. I have a really sensitive GI system though. (IBS so I have to be careful anyway.) Find something that you CAN eat that doesn't cause problems (or run on an empty stomach, some people do this too) and then you can experiment from there. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() I do my run during my lunch break so I need to find a breakfast and snack that wont make me ill....I'm going to try oatmeal, with a banana and skim milk for breakfast...and then the nutrition bar as a snack (I work out so much better WITH it)....so lets see how the change up goes...will let you know on Wednesday (next weigh in) since thats the next time i have a high intensity during lunch run scheduled. I also have a sensitive stomach...I have had gastroenteritis twice, and food poisoning once. Food poisoning is not so rare, except, I took two bites of that funny tasting sub and stopped eating and ended up in the ER the next morning...my boyfriend didnt think my sub was funny tasting and ATE THE WHOLE THING...HE drove me to the ER ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's hard to find something that agrees with your stomach before running. Lots of trial and error for me. Eggs are no good, lots of people suggested toast and PB, but the PB comes up for the whole run. It's gross. Bananas are no good either. So, I've found that granola bars work and so does cereal. If I run in the afternoon I'm really careful to eat small meals during the day and nothing heavy. You'll find it, just keep trying! On a side note, I started keeping a food journal on Wednesday after my 2 lb gain and I'm already down 2.5 lbs. Amazing what happens when you pay attention to what's going in your mouth! |

Imagine my shock and complete delight when I had to go down not one but two sizes! I was so proud of myself ![]() And a bad note, I've been eating horribly the past few days. Pizza, chicken wings, beer, spicy crispy chicken sandwich...and not going to the gym...smoking a cigarette a day at least ![]() |

It all wants to come up, bad acid reflux. So I tend to eat a good 4 hrs before the training, and soldier through it. Maybe that's what you need to do. Make sure you have something in your stomach for energy but already digested to the point that it won't cause too many problems. Have you had ulcer study done? A probe to see how susceptible you are to ulcers? Or your pyloric count? Helicobactor pylori, a major factor in the cause of what was once believed to be stress related ulcers. You might want to do some other research on the gastroenterology aspect. A bleeding ulcer would definately cause nausea especially during different times of the day and/or during strenuous activity. With the increased production of stomach acid or increased blood pressure only then would signs of a tummy ache be evident until of course or if the condition worsens. Let us know what you find out from your book, sounds interesting. ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i146q - 2008-03-14 1:45 AM I went shopping for those illusive skinny jeans today! I found some, but I didn't buy them. They were still too snug for my taste. I don't like baggy jeans either, it's just I'm in a transitional phase I guess. So I bought the same size I usually do ( between 36x30 's and 34x32's) ( 2 pair). I tried on I think 12 pair, and the 33x30's would have cut off my manhood in about 2 hrs time, that or I would have passed out (decreased blood flow). But I did notice that the normal 36x30's were getting really baggy for my taste, so I've digressed to wearing a belt. Does this qualify as too much information? ![]() The skinny jeans will be yours soon enough. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, Skinnies! I finished my first 1/2 marathon yesterday and it went great!!! ![]() I'm afraid to weigh myself on Wednesday, though - between retaining water in all my muscles (which will hopefully go away) and rewarding my efforts with a trip to Wendy's (plus ice cream), I'm not sure how the scale is going to be. Ah well! Have a great Monday! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel better about things today. I auditioned for America's Got Talent yesterday and didn't get put through to the next round which was quite disappointing. I did opt for fast food for dinner because of that but it made me sick which is what I get I guess. But I feel like I'm mostly back on the wagon today with maybe a leg hanging off the side. I did get my butt out of bed around 5:15 this morning to get to the pool. I did my required 100 yards, periodically sticking my face in the water and then did drills for the remaining 50 yards of cool down. Then on to the gym for my 35 minutes of walking/running which turned out to be 25 minutes because it was dry and hot on the running track. It was my first time running on anything besides a treadmill and it was interesting. And now my legs feel like jello ![]() |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saling4..you are a GENIUS!!!!!! After my three week plateau, I took your advice and did some high intensity trainining. One GREAT result was making me realize what I am capable of, and how much I have improved with my training. I was able to bike and run faster (now my "regular" speed feels slow) and I was able to bike farther. The other GREAT result was 2 pounds just fell right off! So I have now entered the 50s!!! (I am working on de-conditioning my mental chain from the scale). So, your great advice really helped out last week in more ways than one...THANK YOU SALING4!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Everyone, So it's been 10 days since I got sick and I decided that though I'm still taking antibiotic the set is nearly over so it's time to stop lazying around. Weather is nice (not only not ranining but also quite sunny) so I made a brave decision to go running outside. Got properly dressed, got the right attitude: it's your first time outside so take it easy and just enjoy it- and off I went. OMG I thought I'm gonna die after 7minutes. My lungs felt as if somebody was shooting them with a nail gun- am I smoking 20 cigarettes a day in my sleep or what?. The whole "running" session lasted 20mins and it took me 26mins to WALK home so you can imagine my glacier pace. I know I've been sick and it was my very first time "running" outdoors but this was a disaster. My conclusion: if you think that running on a treadmill for 40mins or more means something you're wrong. In terms of nutrition- not so good for the last few days. I managed to stick to my usual breakfats (2 wheatbix) and tried to have reasonable lunches (like brown bread open sandwiches with cooked chicken, ham and cheese) but dinners and snacks definitely got out of control (fries, curry sauce, crisps, 1 twix, 500ml of coke, cookies). I'm guessing that didn't really help my running either but it's been only since Friday that I was eating really bad. I'm planning to go to the gym tomorrow even though today it seems that those hours I spent there so far mean nothing. That's the end of my rant. I wish you all happy St. Patrick's Day - Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit!!! |
