Hey ladies...hope you day is going well.  I will probably be M.I.A. for a couple of days.  I just took my computer to the shop this morning...power supply died (said the super non-geek firefighter computer idiot).  So I stopped by the library...and frickin stood in line for a shot at a terminal, so I won't be here...except in spirit...for a day or two.

I will however, be training and will log when I can.  I have no doubt that you ladies will keep smashing pumpkins and kicking pineapples until I get back.

Hugs and kisses to you all.

Steve

We'll miss you, Steve!! Happy training!

owl_girl - 2008-04-03 10:54 AM You two are confusing me with the same avatar!!! I think it's Julie and then, darnit, it's the competition!!!

LOL - you and me both!

so, Tracy - did you see my description of my spinning class last night? thoughts?

So you stood a little bit, eh? I don't do anything in my classes that you can't do on a real bike. No one in their right mind would stand up on their bike for a whole hour! A cyclist is most efficient while seated. When you are seated, your body weight is supported by the saddle and your legs can go to the business of pedaling. When you stand, your legs have to pedal AND support your body weight. Don't get me wrong. Standing does have a time and a place. It just needs to be used appropriately. What kind of isolation drills did you do?

well, I didn't do them (the isolation drills kill my knees)- nor did I do all the standing -

I'm not really sure what kind of drills they are - she has the class stand, with a lot of resistance and move only their legs - then she has them 'bounce it out' in between drills

it just doesn't seem quite right to me

I know what you mean about all the standing in spinning classes.... When I go to a spin class, I just do my own thing. I usually keep my butt planted in the saddle, but I usually increase the reisistance or cadence (or both) while the rest of the class is standing. I might do one or two "standing climbs" per class, but that's about it.

that's exactly what I do!

It's pretty obvious that this instructor has never actually ridden a bike

Kinda figured that was what you would say about the isolation drills. Those are very bad for your knees (as you have felt). You never do anything like this on a bike. Not sure what you mean by "bounce it out" but.....if you are bouncing in your saddle while pedaling a Spin bike, you don't have enough resistance.

She literally has them keep the resistance but bounce their bodies up and down - kind of exaggerating the bend in the knees - it's sort of hard to describe, because it's nothing you would EVER do on a bike

All I can say is I'm really glad I learned from someone who knew what they were doing.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why do spin classes instead of riding your bike on a trainer stand? Is it to combat the boredom?

I do not spin or do the drainer, but between the two, I would rather be in a class with others then sitting behind the tv or in the basement or wherever you train...plus you can become lacadaisical on the drainer...and if you do that in the class...not as easy to do in a class full of people...same thing with me on the bike...I notice that I push much harder when in a group, but when I ride alone I sometimes find myself looking all about and enjoying the scenery...then I look down and realize that I should be going much faster...so what I am getting to is  motivation purposes and can become social...plus my sister who spins three times a week has made lots of great outdoor riding friends...but me, I am a strictly outdoor rider....if I can not ride outside due to rain...then I will run or swim...
