hughes411 - 2009-01-15 10:54 AM Did we lose matt and david?

I'm not lost just been crazy lately, was in Key west 80 deg for a week and a half now I'm back home at a windchill of -37.  Trained everyday down there either MT biking, swimming, running.  Diet was completely shot though as there is not much to do there but train, eat, and drink.   If I get some time this weekend I will update my logs.

I was excited to try out my new newton running shoes outside ( the jury is still out as they are completely different than anything else)

Hope everyone's training is going good and I will catchup on the your posts this weekend

David - I will be in Key west for a couple weeks starting in Feb.  Did you rent a bike down there?  I considered doing so to be able to train...Now I am dreaming of warm weather!

Thanks its kinda nice to be back :-), still depressed about the COLD! I can deal with 20/30 deg but -20 sucks! lol

As for bike rentals there is only one place that rents bikes other than single speed cruisers their website is www.bikerentalskeywest.com  We always get mid level mt bikes that seem to work out perfect.  This year I got a 21 speed hybrid with full sus and it worked out great.  You pay alittle more but it is much more like riding a race bike.

I will be in Key West for one day as part of a cruise my wife and I will be on.  I can check the exact date, but it will be around the 9th.  Any chance you being there then and maybe we could meet one another and have a cup of coffee, glass of wine, whatever?  I think for our shore excursion, we are just going to rent bikes and tool around town.

Thanks for the info on that!  The weather is crazy!

Greg - Will you be there Feb 9th?? I fly down there Feb 25th and fly home March 17th.  I will be at Disney for part of the trip and staying in a home in Cujoe Key (next to Key West) the rest of the time.  It would be cool if we were there at the same time!

Hi-I'm back!

Welcome back David.  I'm psyched for everyone who is getting to spend some time in the warm weather.

My work trip was to Long Island/Queens. It looks like I'll be going there for 2 days a week for atleast a month. I managed to get in 20 minutes of yoga, but nothing else. There is so much to do while I'm there, that I put in 12 hour days yesterday and today-I'm really not used to that!

I wasn't able to weigh myself this AM-so I'll check in tomorrow morning.

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been around lately. I've had a bunch of other stuff going on. Looks like everyone is doing a great job with the training, keep it up!! I had a pretty rough beginning to the week, but made up for it with a couple great workouts Thursday and Friday. Weight around 172 Friday. I definitely feel a big change in body comp. this week. Everything seems to be tightening up.

Have a great weekend everyone! Keep up the great work!!

Nate

Questions for everyone...well all performance members

What are the benefits of being a performance member? I read all the features but want to know what everyone thinks. Of all the features which do you use the most?

I'm contemplating becoming a performance memeber but can't decide. Also, I do not plan on using the training plans AT ALL, if that makes any difference to what you tell me. Thanks!

I am just a performance member for the training plan...but I have benefited from the articles and videos too...I don't think I would have done it except for the plans.  I don't think you can download Garmin data unless you are a performance member (I may be wrong...)

Weight: 157.2   Wow! That sounds high...

I love the silver performance membership for the detailed training plans, the ability to upload my planned training into my log, the ability to upload garmin info directly into the log, and the videos and articles. Like Bronwyn, the reason I got it was for the plans, but since having it I have really found all the features to be worth more than I pay. Plus, I like to support BT because it's such a great site

Same here -- I went for the training plan but am enjoying other options, plus I want to support the site as it has been such a good resource for me.

Also, I don't plan to shell out for a coach anytime soon -- just don't feel I can justify the cost for my hobby when I'm not even bringing in $$ (stay-at-home mom)!! (Every coach I've looked into around here is $200+/month.) But putting a few bucks into this site for a year isn't a big deal and it gives me access resources that can be valuable if I use them properly!

OK, so here's another question: How do you know when you need a new saddle? I've used my stock saddle for 2.5 years now and have been fine on it. Have done some long rides (did a 204-mile ride over two days last summer, plus the training leading up to that) and survived, although I will say my butt is what hurt most on that ride! Anyway, lately around 40-ish minutes into Jorge's workouts I'm feeling uncomfortable. Hard to know if part of this is mental -- just riding indoors endlessly -- or if it's time to replace. Anyone have any thoughts or feedback?

It sounds to my like you  have a great saddle.  If you can do a 200+ mile ride and still manage to sit down at all, that's pretty good.

One thing I learned is that riding on the trainer indoors adds some "weight" to your sitting.  I was told but a bike fitter that when you ride outdoors vs. indoors, a couple things are different.

1. One tends to change positions more often outside.  Stand to hammer or go up a hill, slide back or forward on the saddle, etc.

2. There is some amount of "lift' you get outdoors from aerodynamics.

That said, finding the best saddle for you can be tough.  I went with Specialized this time since the bike shop offered to try every saddle they made, if necessary until I got one that fit.  It worked out that the saddle I bought first was very comfortable after some break-in time.

And it's kinda funny, because after riding my new saddle for many months, I got on my old bike, which I thought that saddle was comfortable, and boy was that a butt-buster!

Love to help Bronwyn, but I'm a year and a half short of the demographic. Let us know the results when she's finished. Sounds interesting!

Thanks for the saddle comments, Greg. They make sense. I was thinking about it this morning -- how you do just pretty much plant your butt when you're on the trainer and while there may be some shifting around it's nothing like riding outside where you might stop for lights, stand for hills or just cuz, etc. I hate the idea of replacing the saddle as my fit is oh-so-perfect... so I'm more than happy to leave well enough alone.

Jorge's workout was really hard for me to get into today mentally. It wasn't anything much harder than usual (main set was 4x5' at 97-103% then 12' at 86-91%) but man was I hating it. So many negative thoughts were zooming around for me. It got better for 3rd & 4th sets of 5', so maybe it was just that my legs took a long time to get warmed up and it was dragging me down mentally. In any case, I was really happy to be done with the 5' set.

I have peeked ahead just a little bit and am a bit scared of the future workouts!! Yikes!! These workouts HAVE to be good for my cycling... for they continuously kick my @$$!!!

I'm having a run of bad luck. (pun intended). I smashed my knee up yesterday, and couldn't get a workout in.

Today I managed to get to the pool. It was sore thru the whole workout, but I got it done. By 10 AM, it was much more sore and swollen. I've iced it and taken ibuprofin. But it hurts to do stairs, or to bend it really far. The weight of my pants hurts the bruise. Now my foot is swelling a little.Cry

Okay, I'm done whining. Thanks for listening.

So sorry, Heidi!! Be very careful with it, OK, and don't try to do too much too soon. If it doesn't start to feel better get it looked at!! It sucks being hurt!! Hoping you are on the mend soon. Keep up the ice and ibuprofen. My husband keeps making me ice my shoulder -- I am bad about it. It's much improved but still not "right." I did PT twice last week, and she wants to see me 2x this week and then we'll see if we can go to 1x a week. Ugh!!! At least I can live my life, for the most part!

Hang in there!  These are the hardest workouts that I have ever done, I think.  The way I look at it, other people aren't working as hard this winter and the difference between the successful and the unsuccessful is the successful people do things that unsuccessful people don't.

Some may be doing a lot of steady state, low HR stuff to build a base, but I think these workouts will make us so strong, that once spring hits and we can go outside, we can do the long rides with a good base of strength and endurance.  Plus, it is hard to drone away on the trainer.  An hour is about all I can take.

Jorge has been really good about increasing the efforts as the weeks go on, but they are not huge jumps that are unrealistic.  You will be able to complete them.  Your logs on the current workouts look strong.

Bron-When does your daughter need the results? I'll take part in her science project.

Kyla-It looks like Jorge's workouts are getting harder. I know what you mean about the negative thoughts sometimes. Good music helps (or the kids coming in to hang out with me.).

Thanks for the pick-me-up words, Greg and Heidi!! Yeah -- Greg I totally told myself today, "If this was easy, everyone would do it. It's not easy, therefore it's putting you ahead of others. You WILL see results in your races next year." One of my goals for the winter was to work on my biking, so I need to remind myself that this was all part of my greater plan!

And Heidi, when I bumped my radio station from NPR to tunes, it helped a ton. It's amazing the difference music makes!! I actually listen to NPR a lot when I run (geeky, I know), but I scroll around stations as my mp3 player has an FM tuner. When things really get tough, that's when I find my Foo Fighters and other energetic tunes on my mp3 to lose myself!!

It's good to know that the workouts will get harder gradually. I saw something somewhere at 115% and it sent me into a small panic!! j

Good luck repeating week 4, Heidi. You'll do great once your knee is on speaking terms with you again!
