Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN!

I have a question about running sockless.  It isn't something I've done before, but am thinking of making the transition for races this year.  The useful life of my current shoes is about up, so I'm wondering if timing the transition with new shoes is a good idea.  I figure I'll give it a shot on shorter runs and work up from there.  Anybody else run sockless? Advice?  Are certain shoes better for sockless adventures?

Running sockless is something that I have done for Oly or less, but not worth it in the longer runs.  I figure I can grin n' bear it if I get a blister 4 miles in, but on the longer races it isn't worth it.

If it were me, and you were going to buy a new pair of shoes go ahead and break your shoes in, then after a couple weeks break your feet it.

I just bought a pair of Zoots (a few weeks ago), and they design for triathlete's to run without socks.  Higher heal, build in speedlaces, etc.... My 1st run w/ them was an 8 mile run (without socks) and I was cursed by a huge blister in each arch, but have since run the same distance without socks and been fine!

Just got in from a full morning of kids swim lessons (gotta get ready for our summer league) and see that Suzy is ahead of her goal pace.  Hold it steady Suzy, you're awesome.  Here goes a few hours watching the feed (at least it isn't Ironman when I lose the whole daySurprised

Less than 6 miles I run sockless.  I thinks past this is something I just need to get over and do.  Throw some BodyGlide on your feet before your run.

As far as shoes, I'd be more focused on  fit rather than one for running sockless.  If you have a shoe your feet and legs like then learn to run sockless in it...not the other way around if that makes sense.

Don't forget about your cycling shoes too.

swbkrun - 2009-04-20 12:20 PM Reuben, I prrefer out and backs, or big loops.  I want it to be that my only choice to get back to where I am going is to get back there..... NO OUTS!

I also like to mix it up, and explore.  This adds to the fun.  If you get a little lost, and discover something new..... It's worth it.

Congrats on the aero bars.  Now you know we are all good, as no one here outbid you Laughing

I can't keep up with you guys - not even going to tryLaughing.  Of course, being off-line for most of the weekend probably doesn't help.  I was trying to get in some really good training over the weekend since my tri is only 2 weeks away now.  Had some success and some failure.  I had a great 5k race Saturday morning (missed a PR by 16 seconds), a decent swim yesterday, but totally bombed on the bikeFrown.  Not a good thing.  I realized while out on a ride Friday night that most of my gears don't work.  I can only get to 4 out of the 12.  Something seems to be wrong with the rear shifter - it'll only pick up 2 of the gears.  So I've got 2 choices - either try to get it into the LBS to see if they can fix it or go with what I've got for my first tri and get it looked at afterwards.  I'm leaning towards the second only because I don't want to be without a bike this week.  I really need to get some training in - I'm still not really comfortable riding on the roads with all the cars going by and I have a feeling the hills on the course are going to do me in, so I want to work on that as much as possible this week.

It's funny - I originally thought the swim was going to be the hard part for me, now I'm not worried about that at all but I'm starting to dread the bike part of the race.  Good news is, if I can just get through this first one, I'll have over 3 months to work on the biking in order to get ready for the next!

Ruben,  you trained, you were at the starting line and you finished the race...most people can't lay claim to any of those three.  So keep training, more good things to come!

Back from the fabulous weekend?

I will say in one of life's questions...."What would be your perfect weekend?"

I just achieved it!  It was awesome.  We got a lot of strange looks as we walked through the lobby of this swanky Lodge w/ our bikes, but we loved it!  And did we sleep in Sunday?  No way... Up at 6:45 to hit the roads for a nice run before breakfast!  It was an epic weekend!  Kim and I both would have liked to bike further, and run further, but we had to get back in time for the massage, and breakfast reservation.  Not complaining though.

On a side note---Check out Janet getting her 5k done Saturday!!!

The bike is my weakest - by far - so maybe the others can chime in.  But I'm wondering, with hills on the race don't you want as many gears as possible.  Maybe you can get it by the LBS and just see how long it would take for them to look at it/fix it.  I hear you about needing time on the bike (I really hear you!) but I know if it's my lower gears missing I'm dead on hills and burning my legs to boot.

I have a quick injury question for the group.  Anybody ever trained with a broken toe?  It doesn't really hurt that bad when I run, but swimming is a different story.  Seems to throb the entire time I swim?  Does this seem odd or has anyone else had similar experience?

Other than that, the training is going pretty well (granted I am just 2 weeks in, to my 20 week plan).  Next race is 5/17/2009.  Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Have you tried to tape your 2 toes together?  I feel like this may limit your toes moving around so much?  Might make a difference?!

You might be able to get them to check it out.  If it's something simple like adjusting the derailleur that doesn't take very long.

Josh,  I'm sorry about your toe, I feel your pain.  Really!   I currently have a broken little toe (rt foot).  It hurts a little on the bike and run because of my shoes (Easter was fun with the dress shoes for church).  But I actually have not had a problem in the pool.  I can only think to maybe tape them together and see if that helps.  Wish I could add more.
Glad the training is going well.
