Artemis - 2010-01-07 8:40 AM We're one week into the New Year!!  How is everyone doing?

The more training that I'm doing, and the more people I talk to/meet, I'm getting really antsy to get outside and use everything taht I've learned to far in the great outdoors!  So aside from a little exercise cabin fever and just hating the cold weather, the New year is going well...however, I can't seem to get over this psychological issue I have with stopping after one lap...I know that all I need to do is just keep going, because I don't think that I physically have to stop, but my brain is stuck...hopefully the swim class on Sunday will help with that; or maybe I can power through if on my own tonight!

I'm doing ok with running the miles in my training plan, but I'm having so much trouble with deciding what to do as far as my workout goes on my days I don't run.  I really think I need a very specific training plan set out for me in advance.

Yesterday was a bad day for me.   I ended up spending a lot of time on the phone with our bank straightening out fraud on our checking account.  I was so upset by the end of the day - the bank has been a nightmare to deal with and all I want is to get our money back.  I had already decided not to work out that morning, but I should have gone anyways to relieve some stress.

I hope you get everything worked out - that's so frustrating.  That's the kind of day when you need to go to a boxing gym to let out steam.

I think I'm doing well starting off the new year! I am almost through week #1 of my 22-wk beginner sprint tri training schedule. So far I've been able to get everything completed pretty easily. I just need to focus on my eating habits a little more to achieve my weight goals.

Speaking of goals, mine for the year are:
Lose 10lbs by April 1
Complete 1st Sprint Tri 6/6/2010
Complete 1st Olympic Tr by end of the year

And maybe if I'm on track to accomplish all of that, I'd like to complete 1/2 marathon

I'm sorry to hear about your bank situation   I have started doing the 22-week sprint tri training program and like it a lot. It tells me specifically what I need to be doing swimming/biking in addition to running. Also, since I've just gotten started, I haven't gotten into all the lingo of doing "bricks, VO2max, intervals, tempo" etc. So that might help out some

All the lingo can definitely get confusing!  I can clear some of it up:

bricks: one workout followed immediately by the other.  Most common is bike followed by run.  It's meant to get your legs used to the transitions you'll have to do in a triathlon.

VO2max: is your maximum oxygen uptake or aerobic capacity.  It's the hardest your body can work for a given sport.  Heart rate zones are usually defined as a percentage of VO2 max.  Note: your max heart rate is NOT 220-age!  The best way to figure it out is to do a 30 minute test where you work as hard as you can and then take your average heart rate for that time as your VO2 max.

intervals: during an interval workout, you'll work as hard as you can for a short period of time, then recover.  Maybe one lap around the track sprinting, then recovering for a few minutes.

tempo: the pace you would race at

Today is finally Friday!!  What are your plans this weekend?

I'm planning to bike tomorrow on the trainer and run 4 miles on Sunday.  I think I'm going to suck it up and run outside.  I'm also considering going to a hot yoga class, but we'll see.  I might save that for Monday on my "strength/stretching day."

Jen, I wish I could suck it up and run outside because the long runs on the treadmill are starting to wear, and it's only been a few weeks...but I was thinking of trying a Zumba class tonight.  I watched one briefly a couple weeks ago and it looked like they were having an awesome time.  Tomorrow I think I have a swim/bike/run, and wanted to incorporate my long run tomorrow because I have a 2 hour tri training swim class Sunday.  Otherwise, I plan on eating a lot as I'm going to a little get together tomorrow night!

I missed a swim workout this week, so I'm headed to the pool for a workout both Sat and Sun. Even though I missed a swim, I'm feeling pretty good because I did something (video or rowed) every day this week, and that's a big deal for me! And I didn't go out for lunch all week - and that's also a big deal for me.

Also might check out a week's membership at our local Gold's - they have a pool, and I'm thinking I'd prefer the facilities and times available over the University, so I may suck it up and get a 40-45/month membership. At least give it a shot for a week.

I've always been curious about hot yoga, but too wimpy to try it Undecided

Thanks.  No - I'm still working on it.  I think we almost have our accounts back to the way they should be, and then we're switching banks after all this.

Jen - Are you using a Hal Higdon plan for your half?

My training plan calls for a 5K race tomorrow, but since there is only 1 race in the entire area and it's ridiculously cold out,  I'll just go to the gym.   And Sunday I hope to make it to a spin class.

Nice job on the workouts this week!!  Missing a swim workout isn't the end of the world and it's nice that you've maintained the momentum by doing other things.

Hope you can get the gym situation straightened out.

I am.  If it calls for a race and you aren't doing one, just do your run at race pace - probably a little harder than you would run your other long runs.  The idea is just to get you used to moving a little faster and build endurance at the higher speed.  That's why it's shorter than the other runs on the weekend.

Hey Jen,
Well, my week didn't go great - but it went as well as it could considering what was going on.  My dad had passed away on Dec 31st, so my goals weren't quite the priority - but I did what I could!   Too many family gatherings with too much food to help with the loose 1 pound goal!
I did try a little run today, but haven't got into the pool yet.  Sunday - FOR SURE!!  And the pool I like to swim at finally reopens this weekend, so I'll be able to get back to my Tues/Thur swims next week.  Yeah!!!

The Olympic Tourch is coming to my fair city tomorrow for the Tourch Relay this weekend so I'm hoping to get out to part of it at some point!!
Oh... and for working out... tomorrow is a 1.5 hour rip and ride session (45spin/45weights) and if the back is ok, maybe a little run on the treadmill.  And Sunday -- FINALLY I will get my butt back in the pool for the first session with the mulitsport club for a 1.5hour swim session.  (hopefully I don't sink -- it's been over a month since I've been in the pool! )

Thank you all for your kind words.  I come from a fairly large family and we were very fortunate that we were all together for the holidays and for each other.  We are blessed in oh so many ways.  My dad was so proud of what I accomplished in the past year, and I am so looking forward to dedicating my training in 2010 and my first real length tri to him.

It looks like several of us had some trying times over the holidays, and although there are some not so nice people out there, I am very happy to be part of an online community of great and supportive people!  Thanks BT and thanks Artemis’s Group!  There are good things in life!! Laughing
