Veteran 257 Iowa | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread If the water is too warm and you want to wear your wetsuit, they will allow you to wear but you will just be ineligible for any awards. Also, you will have to start at the end of the swim waves. They will create another swim wave for people wearing suits and you start last. That is what they said last year anyway. |

New user 24 Hutchinson, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I sent an email to the athlete services coordinator at IM World Headquarters about the status of the 2011 Athlete Guide. The response from Kristen Stantz was as follows: Thank you for your email. The 2010 Athlete Guide is very similar to the 2011 version which will be posted in the next day or so. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Feel free to email me with any other questions. See you at the starting line! So, it looks like the 2011 guide will be posted this weekend.

Member 58 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread not trying to be a harbinger of bad news or negativity...but I obsess about the weather (especially since I'm flying from NYC)...weather.com says 40% chance of scattered t-storms for the 12th.. it was showing clear skies earlier this morning. I hope the weather for the 12th really does do as said in Kansas, wait 10 minutes and it'll change. |

I have erased this post from BT since it is bad juju to post weather reports more than 10 days out from the race! Weather will be perfect. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Water surface temp. (June 1) was 75 deg F. Looking like the wetsuit may not be happening. I've heard they can be a little creative in terms of where they measure the water temp. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I would be willing to bet it will be "wetsuit legal" come race morning.
Then come race morning, magically the temp is wetsuit legal. Huh. |

Veteran 369 Cabot, Arkansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Looks like it's gonna be cooler there than is has been here for race time. It's almost 730pm here and still 94 degrees with a 104 heat index. I have a 54 mile Charity Bike Ride in the morning and it's supposed to be even hotter. I actually love the heat. I've had over 10 tours in Iraq/Afghanistan/Kuwait...great place to work on your tan. As long as my body loves it too and doesn't cramp it shouldn't be too bad, but it being hotter a lot earlier here and real humid helps getting acclimated easier |

As far as ease through water and keeping my body afloat a bit more? With a wetsuit on you can almost float on top of the water without exerting an once of energy. But that's me and my 165-170 lb frame. But the more on top of the water you are, particularly when aided by a wetsuit, the less water resistance you encounter. Which means you'll be faster, not by leaps and bounds, but faster than sans wetsuit. Right now, based on current water temps and predicted air temps, I'm thinking the water is going to be too warm come race day for wetsuits . . . . or exactly 76.1* F. I just looked at Army Corps site and "Water Surface Temp" as of June 1 was 75. Dumb question, but this is the water temp right? |

Extreme Veteran 516 Olathe, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread pitbullzz - 2011-06-03 7:31 PM Yes and no. I believe for races they drop the thermometer below the water surface to a certain depth, where it is usually slightly cooler. You would have to ask the race director on how far down they go to take that reading.I just looked at Army Corps site and "Water Surface Temp" as of June 1 was 75. 3 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I am doing IM 70.3 Kansas next weekend. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for aero wheel choice. I have a set of Jet 6 and Jet 9 available to me. Right now I have a 9 on the rear and a 6 on the front. My bike is a road bike that I put aero bars on (hardly use them). Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Please see Lisa's post above. Too soon to worry about the weather forecast. The forecast will change everyday this week, I won't put ANY faith in the forecast until Thursday or Friday. I have as good a chance to win the Powerball as they do to predict the weather in the Midwest 6 days out.

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Chance favors the prepared....... For my run Saturday I intentionally ran when it was forecasted to be the hottest (between 3 and 4) for my run to help prepare "mentally" for hot weather running. Was only 40% RH but it was around 93-94 degrees. If it's hot, ease off some on that bike because the run will be tough, especially the second loop. Hydration will be key and don't wait until race day to start hydrating. |

New user 24 Hutchinson, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Good work reecealan! I did the same thing on Saturday. I rode for 1.5 hrs then ran 8 miles in 95 degrees. Really sapped my energy. Did not train on Sunday, but did yard work and sweat like crazy. Heat makes it much harder to stay at peak performance even with proper hydration and energy supplements. It can be done, but it starts in the days leading up to the event. I started my hydration/nutrition plan today being that it was 100 yesterday, 102 today and 100 tomorrow. Work out in very early a.m. Stay out of the heat as much as possible. Wear a hat on race day and pour water over your head at every aid station. Hopefully they'll have some ice to chew on and put inside tri suit. |

I have made that mistake in the past. I thought I was acclimating and all I was doing was wearing myself out when I should have been tapering and resting for the race. I am not going to make that mistake this time. I am starting the tapering, hydrating, and watching the food intake. I am praying for mid-80's, that would be nice compared to the my May race or what we had this past weekend. My son came down with an stomach virus over the weekend. My biggest fear rght now is that I will catch it next. It happened to my last October. I caught it the morning of the that race. Praying for good health.

I'm contemplating buying a speed suit / swim skin and don't have time before I leave tonight to get to any stores in NYC and not worth the expedited shipping for UPS to send to my hotel.. |

Veteran 297 Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Elite Cyling in Leawood, Kansas is probably the best pure Tri shop. However, if the Expo is anything like it has been the past few years, you will be able to buy anything and everything you need at the race site Friday or Saturday, including a speed suit. Not sure you will get the best deal on $$$, but most of that stuff isn't discounted at the LBS' anyway. Safe travels! Edited by cjkelly0729 2011-06-07 2:33 PM |

Veteran 369 Cabot, Arkansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Question about bike pumps. I know they said there will be a few in T1 come race day, but if we are checking out bikes in on Saturday, for those who have been there before, was there ever an issue getting a pump to top off your tire? I'm ready to get on the road...leaving early Friday morning. Did my last race Saturday(a 54 mile bike). My tire blew right as I was taking it off my car rack like 12 minutes before the start of the race. That sucked. Also, what was worse...and sad, a lady perished on the ride we did. I guess she was coming down a steep him and either had and equipment malfunction or had some sort of operator error and he slammed into a parked Police Car directing traffic and died instantly. So sad. |
