New Years Eve 8k, ran straight through, no ouchies, steady cadence, few hills, PR by 4:11 from last year. Tough AG this year. I took 39/40 with a 57:09 finish (40/40 was close with 57:28). Last year I would've place 14/25. Its all a matter of who shows up. I wasn't LAST!!! Not that I cared. I was so happy to run it all!!
YEAH!!! WAY TO GO....nice PR. Can you add me as friend to your training log? Would love to be able to 'inspire' you. Note the Manatee table further up this page ... will take you wherever you need to go with this group. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED What do some of your daily training diets look like? What do you eat? The truth is about half the time I eat like crap. However, when I eat like crap, I don't eat much. I don't have a specific nutrition plan regarding workouts unless they're very intense (which if you're a beginner or doing lots of long-course training, would be very rarely) or very long. If they are, then I'm sure to eat a little protein with carb (PB on toast, Pop Tart with lowfat milk, etc.) beforehand, and if it's long (2-3 hrs) I will take some sports drink or other sugar source (you guys have gels, blocks, etc.) every 45min or 1hour. It is best to also take a little protein and some carb in highly digestible forms after (the old chocolate-milk fallback, or a flavored yogurt, or some nuts and low-fiber cereal). However, the latest evidence is starting to show that it might not be SO critical to do it within 30 minutes. But it's still wise, I think, as it may keep you from overeating at the next meal, and it ensures the protein is available for repair. Here's what I've eaten so far today: Breakfast--lowfat granola (lotta sugar though) with lowfat milk, cup of strawberries, coffee with lowfat milk Snack--thin slice of Gouda cheese (1/2 oz or so) Lunch--turkey veggie soup (homemade, fat skimmed off) with 1/2 boiled potato, steamed green beans drizzled with olive oil and apple cider vinegar Dinner is going to be a lean ground beef burger (I put a beaten egg white into the meat to keep it together) with another slice of Gouda cheese and ketchup; lots of salad (olive oil vinaigrette dressing, romaine/radicchio) and the burger will be topped with plenty of tomato and onion. Dessert will be two kinds of cut-up fruit, and maybe a mini Mars bar later in the evening. Clearly, it's a good day, and I'm also cooking for my mom right now, and I'm happy to eat junk but I'm not willing to feed it to her (and she wouldn't eat it; she's old-school incredibly picky has-to-be-perfect-and-healthy German). On a bad day I'd be eating something like a Pop Tart for breakfast with milk, the other Pop Tart with milk for lunch, and a plain McDonald's cheeseburger for dinner with real Coke. No fries. So basically, you're getting the same answers from all of us. And repeat repeat on the logging food--it's the best way to start. Awareness. Also, you just don't want to have to write down "hot fudge sundae at 2am." Edited by TriAya 2012-01-01 3:23 AM |

So looking forward t at last nights 0o sharing thoughts and ideas with you thru 2012. Day 1 of my stop smoking plan. So far i am 3 hrs in and all is well. nobody dead yet! Will be passing up on training today as i should be out on the bike but my head is a little squiffy from a few too many pints of 'Hobgoblin' at last nights New Years party!! Will catch up the bike tommorrow with my other training so that i am not behind. I have also been offered the chance to do some circuit training at a local boxing biased gym. Apparently it is really intensive. I think i will be giving it a go as it will help with my aerobic capacity and weight loss especially as i have now given up the ciggies. Can't wait to see the new me emerge over the next few months. Hope you all reach your goals and have a great year Allen |

My plan of getting up before work this morning and doing my 8 mile run was changed to an evening run as everyone in my neighborhood apparently decided that shooting off fireworks until 0230 was a good idea...
As for nutrition I try to stay on the abs diet meal plan, 6 small meals a day plenty of H2O. Normally start off with morning smoothie and go from there. Happy New Year everyone hope y'all had a safe night! |

I read some of Tom Demerly's post that essentially said adding aerobars to a road bike creates a mediocre road bike and a mediocre tri bike. At least that was my interpretation. In the end, I didn't add them and it appeared I was the only person in the race without either a tribike or clip ons. Since I'm sure I will be doing at least 1 HIM this season, I am back to deciding what to do. I'd love a tribike, but i'd also love to save some money. Decisions, decisions. Ann-Marie [/QUOTE I did my first HIM on my road bike. I got the tri bike after I signed up for am IM and I had it for my second HIM. I like my road bike and I did not want to put aerobars on it for a few reasons -- mostly because I want to use it for climbing and the aerobars would not be great for standing climb plus would add weight that I didn't want to carry up Pilot Mountain. Secondly, I did not want to mess with the fit of my road bike in anyway and I was afraid that adding the aerobars would necessitate some changes that I didn't want to make. Everyone's situation is different. I think that is my biggest concern and am leaning towards the tri bike b/c of that issue. Now if I could find someone in town who wants to go in with me on that Cervelo deal I could probably convince myself that buying the bike makes financial sense

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED I had a bit of a strange encounter on my run this morning. I was running with my dog - male, neutered german shepherd (that becomes relevant) when he stopped to relieve himself. As he finished up, a 20ish guy stopped his car and asked me if i taught him to "pee like that?" I think my first response was "huh?". Turns out he was interested in the fact that Gunnar lifted his leg to pee and wondered how i got him to do that. Apparently he has had unneutered male dogs that would not lift their legs and he wanted them to lift! He just got a male german shepherd puppy and when he saw me with mine (who was lifting his leg), he figured I knew how to teach that move. I had to explain neutered or unneutered, the male dogs I've owned have always lifted their leg to pee and I had absolutely nothing to do with it! I mean really, how would one even go about starting to teach that lesson?! He went away disappointed. I suppose he felt his dogs' lack of leg lifting somehow negatively reflected on his manhood. If i had been thinking more clearly I'm sure I could have come up with some "lesson" for him to practice to achieve his goal Odd start to the new year!

That's odd. I'm curious, what did he say his male dog did to pee, did they squat like a female? Or just twinkle standing up? |

That's odd. I'm curious, what did he say his male dog did to pee, did they squat like a female? Or just twinkle standing up? The impression I got was they just stand to pee w/o lifting their leg - I didn't get that far into it, but there may be some squating too, but not like a female, more like a lowering down. |

Coastal Carolina | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED My dog does both, he lifts if he has something to pee on, fire hydrant, bush or whatever, and will just kind of lean forward if he doesn't. My dad makes fun of him when he doesn't lift his leg some guys take it seriously, no idea why imo as long as it isn't in the house I'm ok with it. |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I really do have to do something as it really puts me off looking forward to swim training. (well that and the fact that i am rubbish at it). x whatever (that means yes) on the soft silicone earplugs. Also, since your ears have already started hurting after swimming ... and I do this after swimming no matter what, even if I wore earplugs: use a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol (usually you can get 80% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol at the chemist's) and plain white vinegar. Dropper in each ear, let it run out, then pat dry with a towel. Some people go so far as to fan or blowdry their ears too. Should be fine either way. Oh, and also, the Mayo Clinic says so. (Don't know what the equivalent in the UK is, but in the U.S. Mayo is one of the premier medical facilities/practices/information clearinghouses). |

At some point, I WILL hold a canine triathlon in the U.S. (they have canine biathlons and Doggie Du's, haha, so why not a triathlon?) All I have to do is train my Lisa Labradog how to ride a bike ... shouldn't be too hard, she already knows how to drive. Stick shift, no less. (She wrecked my car into the side of my house. Truth.) |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED So the answer to the dog pee question is: It's a holdover from wild canines. If they have something to mark on (a tree, for example), they will lift their leg--the higher the better (indicating size). You'll see some pugs lift both hind legs to get REALLY far up (as far up as a pug can, anyway) to pee. Many canids also lift their legs to pee on a spot where other dogs have peed before. In the wild, at least with wolves, usually only the alpha dogs do this, although subordinates will if the alpha isn't there. Both males and females will lift their legs. It is much less common in female domesticated dogs. If there's no pertinent information to leave, the dog just needs to go, it may or may not lift its leg. |
