Fielding - 2007-12-28 9:33 PM Oh no, Yanti! That sucks about the pinched nerve! So painful, ugh. Re: pool etiquette. My pool's pretty busy so I almost always have to share a lane (fortunately I've figured out when the busiest times are, so I can usually avoid the hours when everyone's circle swimming -- man, I hate circle swims). I usually pick one of the slow or medium lanes, sit at the edge and dangle my feet in the water to get the other swimmer's attention. That tends to do the trick. If the other swimmer ignores me, yep, I jump right in and take whichever side of the lane is open. One thing I hate when someone's trying to share a lane I'm already in, is when s/he insists on getting my verbal permission. If we make eye contact and I nod at you, that means I'm cool with you joining me. But for some reason some people insist on, like, tapping me on the shoulder and asking, which is annoying if I'm in the middle of a timed set. There's such a thing as being too polite!

I have to agree on the tapping thing since most of my seesions are timed as well. luckily I don't have your pool issues.

Happy holidays all. I am in hybernation mode right now. I've been off work since Tuesday, but I've also been fighting a head cold, which won the fight. No swimming, running, or biking for me. Just a bunch of sitting around with my puppies. I see I have tons of mentoring to catch up on and hope to get that done by Wednesday.

I need to get my act together since I have my 2nd 5k on Feb 3. I dread getting outside and running in the "cold" but I know I need time on the streets instead of the treadmill so I'll be able to finish

Welcome back, Terri! She's been through the wringer this week, team, so let's bump the cheer.

A lot of us are getting sick/sniffly/injured, and yes, it's common for this time of year* (although it will probably happen at least once during the year no matter what). It's good to be mentally and physically prepared, and not view it as a detour or stumbling block, but rather an opportunity to heal, to recharge, to watch bad TV (good for the SOUL!), to focus on mental training if possible.

*we are all stressed, busy, have our schedules and training and sleep disrupted for holidays, and are exposed to more people ( = some of whom are sick) and even if it's all good, it throws us off.

Just heal up Terri -- you've plenty of time to prep for Surf City. It'll be great to see you there!

You'll be ok just give it time to heal first. This is day 3 of no workouts but we make the best of it. So do like I do and rent a couple of movies, enjoy a Latte from Starbucks (old fashion donut included) and relax. Chinese food to follow later. LOL

Thanks for the swimming tips-like Beth said, there aren't a lot of times I come up against pool crowds so hopefully I won't have to deal with it too much.  I suppose I could also just say I have never shared a lane, so take your chances, buddy!  Then swim all crazy.    I am excited to go to a blueseventy wetsuit sample sale in a couple of weeks to try to get a good deal on one.....not that I will but I will try!  I figure I can wear one in almost all the tris I am signed up for this summer, since it is never really hot here and the water is always cold.

Off topic--Yes the big tv is nice.  It was a gift from someone who had a recent windfall of sorts.  Gotta love when they pay it forward!  Speaking of paying it forward, somebody even bought us our drinks in line at Starbucks drive-thru yesterday (darn it, I only had an americano, can I please change it to a venti peppermint white mocha? kidding.  hehe).  We paid it forward, to the person behind us who only had a drip.    I thought it would be fun to start the tradition of paying it backwards, telling the cashier that the person behind us would love to pay for our drinks, and driving off.  Just kidding.  As you can tell, my silly thoughts are caffeine-induced.  It's a law here, you know, that you have to have caffeine running in your veins at all times.

While running this morning I could not stop thinking (obsessing) about the fact that my next scheduled run is a 5k on Jan 1 that ends with a jump into Lake Washington.  Icy Lake Washington.  Nervous now.  Forecast is mostly cloudy with a high of 44.  Please be thinking of me and sending warm thoughts!!!

Yeek! I will totally be thinking lots and lots of warm thoughts for you (and for me -- I have a long bike ride scheduled that day, and it's been rather chilly here too). I'm also super excited for you. The race sounds like a lot of fun.

It's just another 5K, and you're a great runner. Try not to think of the dip at the end--right now it seems awful as you're warm and cozy in your home, but by the end of the 5K you'll actually be wanting it.

Good luck!!!!

Ah ha ha MWAH HA HA ...

I'll say this challenge ought to get lively with Hector and Beth on Running C and you and Laura on Running D.

I'll only say it once: nobody beats TriAya's Team T.I.T.S. . (Okay, well, at least for the name).

Same, seriously, the challenge groups can be super fun, and here as well as there you will find lots of delightful support and motivation.

I think I'm going to have to take a break from challenges. I just kicked off my oly training plan today, and I'm going to have plenty to keep me motivated just following that plan. I don't need the extra pressure! But I have had a great time with the three challenges I've done so far. I just hit my December swim goal today. With a kind of crappy swim, but whatever. Winner!

Hope everyone's been having a great Sunday. If you didn't already read the post in the tri forums about newbies at the gym, you should definitely check it out. I ran into a lot of the "resolutionists" at the Y today, and I had to keep reminding myself that it's really great to see them (even when they're taking *my* swim lane, hee). It wasn't long ago at all that I was one of them, right?

Shawn, I'm sure everyone's out training their butts off so they can properly close out 2007. Or else they're sleeping to get ready for some marathon partying tonight.

Sadly, I'm at work.

What are folks plans for New Year's Eve?

Fielding - 2007-12-31 12:20 PM Shawn, I'm sure everyone's out training their butts off so they can properly close out 2007. Or else they're sleeping to get ready for some marathon partying tonight. Sadly, I'm at work. What are folks plans for New Year's Eve?

We do an "East Coast New Years" party tonight with some friends who also have kids. We whoop it up at 9 PM our time and turn on the CNN to watch the ball drop in NYC.  Nobody is the wiser and we are all home safe by 10 PM.  I rather like it, as New Years Eve has never really been a fun holiday, more obligatory than not.  For amateurs, haha.

I did make it to spinning class this morning, although now the sun is out so I should have waited and gone for a 'real' ride.  Oh well.  My knee is bugging me--my son ran into it at a weird angle on my ligament so I am hoping it isn't something bad.  Still have the 5k and polar bear swim tomorrow.  Hopefully we have the same weather for that!

I am not doing a challenge in January, I feel like the guidelines from the BT program is enough for me right now....although I do like both the comaraderie and the trash talking....I never seem to have enough time to inspire everybody like I want to so I end up feeling a bit flaky. We will see what Feb brings.  If I decide to do the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride in July I am going to need to start upping my bike miles considerably and that may just be what I need.

Happy New Year everyone!  Be safe, have fun, and let's have a great 2008!

I love that idea! I am so with you on the New Year's Eve obligations. I'd much rather stay home and watch some movies and just kick back with a couple of friends, but there's so much pressure to do something FUN and EXCITING. Ugh. This year shouldn't be too bad for me -- I'm going to a small house party with some former coworkers. It's my compromise, I guess.

Good luck with the race tomorrow! Make sure you post about it right away.

Ha ha indeed ... that's what my roommate says, he calls it "Amateur Night." Then again, he's an old '60s-'70s diehard partyer ...

Like Erin said, the NYC special--what a cool idea!

Sorry you're at work ... I woulda been if I hadn't called in sick ... then again, I AM sick.

I might try toddling down to the beach (two blocks away) to watch the fireworks.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, all! May the year bring each of us all the joys and tribulations in measure that we need to become even better than the marvelous wonders we already are.
