Made it through the storm last night. We live about 75 miles from the beach and the winds yesterday were just incredible. Hurricane gusts that far inland are crazy.  We faired better than most and still have power.  Trees down everywhere, beaches are devastated, rivers flooded, etc.  The eye of the storm passed to our south so we had less rain, but higher winds.

Coastal water surges were unbelievable and NYC experienced record flooding - subway and tunnels inundated with water, large scale evacuations from downtown and more than 1 million without power in the city.  First time Wall Street closed for two consecutive days due to weather since the 1880s.

The size of the storm was just amazing.

Never been so happy for a treadmill - 52' while watching my kids play Just Dance on the Wii.  Put on the iPod and hit some Guns N Roses.

Conditions are much better - lots of wind here still.

Joe,

Good to know you guys are OK. Ironic that in the last two years, more hurricanes have hit the NJ/NY area than us here in South FL. My sister in Washington DC actually gave birth on Friday, so talk about timing (and despite my best efforts, they are not naming the baby boy Sandy...)

8 mile run. Amazing how weather affects MAF training. Best previous 8 mile run was 1:44 (13:07/mile) at HR 144. Today, enjoying the first cold front and high 50's temps, did 1:39 (12:27/mile) at HR 140.

Joe I am glad to hear you and your family are safe. We lost electricity last night, because of the residual from Sandy. The estimated time to turn it on is 5:30 tomorrow. It was a heck of a show with 10-12 ft breakers on Lake Huron.

Heat can be accountable for up to 10BPM of heart rate increase. The body uses the circulatory system as a refrigerant, that's why i put ice in my chest (close to my heart) while racing in the heat. It's worked PERFECT in Ironman Texas, where I ran the marathon in 92 degrees with high humidity. The other place is the head and the hands.

Florida bound today!!!

Joe,  You're not the only one feeling those winds.  Believe it or not, we clocked a 74 mile per hour wind at the coastguard station right by my office here in Michigan coming across Lake Huron. Thankfully not as many power outages here as there are on the east coast. Hurricane storm surge on the great lakes...who would have ever thought it could happen? So far only very minor damage reported.  Running on the treadmill in my barn last night listening to that wind was eerie.

Incredible storm you guys had up there. Footage of NY flooding is scary.

Ernesto, bon voyage and keep in touch before the big day!

A bit stressful time for me here workwise. Starting early I went out for a 7k run last night and couldn't sleep till 1am... While the run was enjoyable, I really dislike the idea of not being able to fall asleep afterwards. I will try not to make this mistake again.

Got in another 45 minutes this morning on the trainer, 2500 in the pool, then got outside for a 4 mile run just now.  Kids are home from school in 5 minutes then another crazy evening full of activities starts again!

Joe, Mitch, Chris and Jim, very glad to hear you made it ok through the storm in in your areas!

Today was supposed to be a day off but I was going crazy between the taper and the uncertainty of the NY Marathon (still don't know if I will be able to run since I'm scheduled to fly into LaGuardia which is still flooded), so I went for a 40 min drainer workout.

Thanks Gabe, what we had here is nothing compared to the East Coast (12 ft breaking surf is about as big as it gets at my house). According to the news the race is going on no matter what. I just hope you can find a safe way to get there.

32' on the dreadmill due to the fact it was raining for the 4th day in a row.  Taper madness is setting in.

Gabe: As you know, LaGuardia is the messiest of all NYC based airports and getting in will be a challenge.  I'd recommend seeing if you can somehow fly into Philadelphia (which is open) and get into the city (no train service right now into the city).  You could also try Boston, but that's a longer drive.  Feel for you due to the uncertainty.

Yes - Thanks for all the thoughts.  I live south of the other Michigan boys and we had about 3 days of steady wind.  Definitely we got off easy compared to the east coast.  Still amazing that they were expecting 15' waves or so off the coast of chicago.

Been a weird week for me.  Don't know if its the head cold or just how busy we've been - but I've had a lack of motivation to workout.  Staying warm and sleeping in won out the last three mornings.  Pledged to run today at lunch - hoping its not too nasty out so i can get outside.

Just saw on DC Rainmakers site that Garmin added a "follow" or "connect" functionality to Garmin Connect.  Seems like you can follow people's activities on Garmin Connect now - much like Strava.  My Garmin Connect user name is the same as my BT name - dangremond.  feel free to reach out and connect to me if you desire.

Finished the month with a 3hr brick session yesterday. Felt good but a little tired at the end. My highs time ever for a  month of workouts. The only issue is my run and bike times are lower.

Hey gang! I'm here in Panama City Beach, already did the athlete check in stuff and I'm just lazy at the hotel. Put a short run this morning if only thirty two minutes, can't upload because I forgot my computer at home. Wife is flying in tomorrow night so she'll bring it.I feel well, worried about Gabe and his flight, not the best time to go to NYC regardless. I'll keep updating, not really a whole lot to say, as usual I will stay away from the race site, too much nervous energy and too many people checking each other out, showing off, etc.

Best of luck to you E!  We'll be tracking you on Saturday.

Mayor Bloomberg confirmed an hour ago that the race is a go!  LaGuardia was so underwater that there is no way it will be ready for Gabe's flight.  Worried as well for him.

Quick question:  How many miles do I need on new pair of shoes (Kinvara 3) before racing on them.  Have a pair which will have under 30 miles which I want to race in - any concerns?

Thank you all for your concerns regarding my trip.  There seems to be some positive news about LaGuardia opening tomorrow to allow certain flights and I'm scheduled to fly out on Friday morning, so we will see what happens until then.  The situation in NYC is really complicated and I feel for all the people that were affected, so if it's meant to be, I will be able to make it and have a great race.  If not, I will run 26.2 miles somewhere on Sunday and make the most out of it.

Happy Birthday Jackie, hope you are having a great one today Laughing

Today a short 4.7 mile run at easy pace
