MDHillSlug - 2009-09-06 8:21 AM I know in my brain that this is the best decision, but in my heart it is soooo not want I want to do! And I'm still left with the nagging thought that maybe my body will never allow me to do Oly's.

It is the absolutely right decision, Nicole! As Cheri said, enjoy the swim and ride! I will just add...leave your runners at home so there won't be the temptation!  Take care of that calf and the Oly's will be waiting for you next season.

I'd already thought of this. You know me too well!

One other note...I also recall that you love your data - so you might want to have your watch ready to take note of your splits for the swim, T1, and bike just in case the race is like mine was this summer. When I DNF'd, they didn't post any of my times so I only had the data from my bike computer. Most importantly though.... just have fun- have a wicked fast ride knowing that you don't need to hold anything back. Go get'em!

I hope everyone has had a fabulous Labor(less) Day weekend -- well, at least those of you in the U.S.  I found out something very exciting yesterday.  I was sitting on the beach with my Mom, and she passed an ALS pamphlet over to me.  For those of you who don't know what ALS is, it is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.  And to me, it is the most horrible disease I've ever seen.  My Dad came down with ALS about six years ago, and nearly four years ago he died.  The disease strips the victim of their dignity.  They become totally dependent on their caregiver, which in this case was my Mother.  Anyway, I'm rambling... the point I'm trying to make is that the Florida ALS Association is putting together a bike ride to raise money for research!!!  Who would have thought??!!!  I am so there... and I am blessed with friends who will go with me and make this happen.  Oh happy day!!

Sorry to hear about your dad, Cheri. I admire your strength to move ahead and take action. Any ideas on distance or when the ride might be?

was a great weekend for me....not for training.

I did get to spend some great time with my daughter who came in - we had a combination yard sale on Saturday and half of Sunday...i made just under $2000 and most important..I found my garage floor again! could actually park both our cars in there again. ran a few runs before, got in a good bike ride, yesterday. Heading out for my long slow run before the fog lifts....Hope everyone else had a good weekend.

enjoy your short week!

Wow! You are a garage sale queen! You must have had some pretty amazing treasures sitting on that garage floor of yours! Or perhaps you just turned on your charm and flashed your smile, and they just handed over the $$.

No tattoo's for this lady....at least not yet.

Which HM are you signed up for?

MDHillSlug - 2009-09-05 10:59 AM
MDHillSlug - 2009-09-02 11:29 AM OK, I have figured out what I'm going to do about the tri. The way I figure it, after the Oly I'm done with running for the year so, I'm gonna try my damnedest to run the thing. Once the race is over I'll have 3.5 months to rehab before the start of next year. I don't see myself walking 10k so if I can't at least run 1/2 the thing I'll shut it down and take a DNF. Is this wise? I don't know, probably not, but I have to try.

In the last few days my emotions have mellowed out and my brain has kicked back in and now I think it most likely that once the ride is over and I've stopped the time on T2 I will call it a day and take the DNF

I guess I should have read on....I think this is a SUPER wise decision on your part....

have a super fun and fast bike ride! after all that is your strongest link! plus, you have become quite the fishy...so have a fun duathalon....

The things that really kicked it over the top for me was that I haven't done a brick in months and especially that I never had a chance to figure out what my nutrition requirements would be (and what I would tolerate) for an Oly distance tri.

I know this is the right decision, but I'm still not happy this is how it turned out.

A couple of the popular local races have their registration opening up this month (and they sell out quickly) but I'm reluctant to shell out $100 each this far in advance when I don't know what my running situation will be! :(

I know it must really suk to get this far into the season and have this happen...right when you are ready to make a big step...but now you can get your nutrition intake all squared away when you begin to train early next  year....

how rude of him! hows the weather been? getting any relief? speaking of weather...last nite we had a huge amount of dry lightning due to cold/hot meeting over the mtns near the coast....was great for my husband and I...but our poor dog was beside herself.

today is a long bike ride and then off to work an event tonight...have a great weekend Lisa! make sure the hubby gives you a raincheck on that bike ride you missed.

dcon - 2009-09-13 3:43 AM Wow.  What a wonderfully calm lake - hope it stays that way for your race Nicole.  Good luck!!

No, it didn't stay that calm. We swam sort of a triangular course: angling toward the right heading out from shore ~500m, left turn for ~500m, then another left for ~500m back towards shore. On the first leg I was swimming into some chop and kept catching a mouthful of water; this 500m sucked! Once I made the first turn conditions improved. Throughout the swim I was having a terrible time seeing the buoys and never felt like I was on course (but there was always someone nearby so I was never alone). Toward the end of the swim I saw people walking all around me while I was still swimming. I've always been told to keep swimming until you start feeling bottom during your stroke but I decided to get up when I saw the walkers moving faster than I was. Because of the long run back to TA I decided to take a moment in the shallows to get the wetsuit off.

The bike was much harder than I was expecting and it felt uphill into the wind both ways. I was hoping to do between 19 and 20mph but ended up doing just over 18. I ran through TA, racked the bike, dropped the helmet, ran out of TA and across the mat, and then looked for where to turn in my chip. I was clearing out of TA while the people around me were heading out for the run. End of my day. End of my season.
