DougRob - 2009-07-15 9:23 AM Sam:

It will definiely be DURING the week. The race is on saturday. we will be in Rockville through tuesday or wednesday and then head to NJ for a few days before returning back south. So monday or tuesday would be great days to ride for me.

Sounds good - I'm sure we can get something together.  We are on the Rockville side of the metro area in Arlington, VA.  Maybe we could ride around Columbia.  There are some great routes up there and it's no far.

sdalessio - 2009-07-15 8:19 AM Good morning group - It's Weds.  I hope everyone's training is going well.  I have been such a slug this month.  I think mentally I knew I had a break b/t my HIM in June and my marathon in Nov.  I start that plan in 2 weeks and can't wait.  I have been coasting and I probably wouldn't care except I want to do well at my next tri July 26.

Ok I hope you all don't mind if I whine for a moment but I have been trying to trim down a bit and drop some pounds before I start my fall plan.  Has anyone struggled to get weight off even with the high level of activity and keeping calories in check.  I have certainly gotten in better shape and changed a clothes size since I started all of this 2 years ago but it has been painfully slow and nothing dramatic.  I don't think I've lost more than 5 lbs. on the scale.

It is incredibly frustrating esp. being female (ie men seem to be able to drop weight much easier).  No offense Tony but I'm going to use you as an example.  He gets off his butt after a few years of online gaming and geta on the tri bandwagon.  We work out about the same and we both eat well.  He's lost about 40lbs. and looks great over the past year.  I have the same weight still clinging to me.  I'm trying the nutrition coaching thru BT.  I tweaked a few things and tried to rebalance my meals but I haven't had to make big changes in my diet.  So what now?  I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.  Is there anyone else in the same boat?

I'm driving that boat Sam.  I can't get past 230 and I think about it everyday.  But I'm not gaining weight and it appears you aren't either so that's a very good thing right!?!

How long have you been working w/ the nutrition coach?  If not to long then chill and see what the affects are in a month or so.

I know this is incredibly hard but you can't compare yourself to anyone either.  You are just beating yourself up over something you have no control over...but again I know its incredibly hard not to.     btw you say online gaming helped him lose weight.  I surmise he'd be a stick figure if he gave up BT.

Keep at it!  You're heading in the right direction!!

It's a good thing not to gain weight although after both my marathon last year and HIM this year I managed to gain a few pounds.  GRRRRRRR!  And it wasn't celebration food.  It's definitely more of a mental issue.  It can be hard to keep up the good work when you don't see results.  Just like if you work and work for a whole year to improve on a time at a race then only go 10 seconds faster.  It kind of makes you feel what is the point.

It's been a few weeks w/ the nutrition stuff so I will keep at it and try to remind myself of the little victories.  Maybe I'll pass some skinny chick at my next race and give her an elbow just for being skinny.  That will make me feel better.Laughing

Oh and Tony did not lose weight w/ his online gaming.  The 6 pack of beer while playing that he went through saw to that.  Wink

First, thanks for the inspires.  I've re-watched some video and re-read some articles and am ready to hit the water today.  Unfortunately, it's pouring today.

Suzy, glad to hear you're getting somewhere with nutrition.  I can take in nearly anything so I can't relate directly, but I feel your pain because my wife has a lot of GI issues that we have fought for years - it's tough.  She's had a several surgeries that have helped a lot, but still has to be careful what she takes in.

Trevor, did you really say you may "Last much longer at a higher speed"  Not sure if it'll help your running, but your wife may appreciate it!Surprised

John, you are a 24 hour comedy show.

Karen - your question about where you sit while climbing.  Different positions will work different muscles.  Standing and moving forward works your quads more (so does pointing your toes) while sitting back and stretching out more in the aero position works the hamstrings and glutes.  "Proper" technique calls for flat feet during the pedal stroke, knees tucked in and resting your weight far enough back on the saddle so you are sitting on your seat bones and not the pubic bones.  People will move forward when trying to descend fast b/c they are shifting their weight to the front of the bike to help gravity.  I would recommend finding the position that balances the muscle usage and one that is comfortable enough to hold.  If you choose to stand while climbing, try to keep your weight back over the center of the bike (not over the handlebars) and think about "painting your butt" with the saddle, IOW moving the bike from side to side underneath you, rather than moving yourself back and forth.  This will reduce power loss while climbing.  Standing draws more power from your quads and will mimic the feel of running.  Spinning at a higher cadance in a lower gear is also a good technique for climbing.  Don't mash up a hill trying to power through a big gear - you'll burn out quick and not have much gas in the tank at the top.  If you do a high spin it may take you a minute or two longer to get up the hill but your power and legs will thank you for it.   Hope this makes sense and helps some.

Sam, I hear you girl.  As nature had it I had 2 very large babies so I have an extra 5 lbs around my waste hips and back that I can't seem to melt away.  And if I have to watch my husband one more time stand in front of the mirror in his tri suit and say "wow I really look skinny" I think I'm going to let the air out of his tires!!   I'm too am hoping the marathon training will help with the muffin - but I also need to reduce my addiction to simple sugars!  I don't drink or over eat so I make an excuse for my junk food.  Maybe that is part of the problem.

Thanks for making me laugh.  I think Tony knows that saying something like that would not be in the best interest of his good health.

And I know what you mean about the kid weight.  Although I lost actual pounds having kids, the weight I was left with got re-portioned and won't budge from my middle.  So you had big babies?  Can you top 9 lbs. 14 oz.?

Hey Sam

As someone who is 4'10" I have to watch what I stick into my trap pretty carefully. I think a good first step is knowing your Resting Metabolic Rate (how many cals do you burn doing nothing).  You can get it tested at a nutritionist office or many gyms. I had it done a few years ago and it 1,300.  YOu can then build your plan from there. Some of the advice in the book I sent you is spot on.  I think we all feel we can eat a lot because we work out, but the fact of the matter is that is not entirely true.  On average a 150 lb person burns 100 cals during a 1m run (for me it is 70 cals).  Not a lot when you consider how ez it is to eat that many calories without thinking.

I agree 100% with Trevor on portion control.  I got a food scale and started weighing what I was eating to get a sense portions.  I also am a vegetable person first, followed by lean protein, fruits and then complex carbs.  I eat most of my carbs the night before a long workout or the morning of the workout.  Finally, H20 was key for me. I dumped my 12 can/day Diet Mt Dews in favor of plain old water and lost weight.

Don't get me wrong, I eat plenty of crap, but the minute I gain a few lbs. I know it is time to cut the cord and send my husband on the road (his eating habits suck and affect mine!!!).  I am about 3% above my ideal running weight and I can tell it.  Thanks to Sam, now I need to start thinking about that some more!

Suzy

Tony on-ling gaming as in poker?? I love you..I got into that quite a bit as well. Once the kids starting coming along, it was harder and harder to play. But man I had some late nights on FT and PS back in the day.

Nope his poison was EverQuest aka EverCrack.  A lot like WOW if you have heard of that.

I think a lot of us are fighting this same issue.  I lost about 35 lbs from Mar-May, but have been "stuck" at about 232 or so for the last 5 weeks or so.  Can't seem to break through to a lower weight.  I do think my body composition is changing from mostly flab to more "fab", but I keep score by the scale (Tanita is an evil mistress!)  I just need to keep the faith, watching what I eat and exercising.   I can say with 100% certainty that both my resting HR and my blood pressure are much better now though.  Hopefully my cholestrol numbers come back better (just went to the Dr. this morning) again.  Perhaps we get to wound up with the numbers on the scale and should look at in a larger context or overall health.

You go girl!!!  Mine were  9lbs 10oz and 9lbs 5 oz, both vaginally and the first one without an epidural.  (not by choice, the damn thing didn't work on me Yell).  Keep in mind I weighed 125 pre-pregnancy and tipped the scales at 175 at the time of birth - all baby and fluid weight.  Needless to say my body did a bit or redistributing of skin and hip bones to accomodate the girls.

Hey Steve  that was a great interview! Like everyone else said, at least now a 'voice' to the pictures.
Can I ask you what kind of sales are you in???
As well, I thought one of the great points you made was when he asked you for advice for a newbie. Deep down asking yourself why you are doing this was spot on. I get that.

And I know what you mean about the kid weight.  Although I lost actual pounds having kids, the weight I was left with got re-portioned and won't budge from my middle.  So you had big babies?  Can you top 9 lbs. 14 oz.

awwww.   that's such a cute little baby.  jack was 10 6

I'm suprised your wife still speaks to you!

Oh I am loving these conversations! Frown

Can't we start a different thread about vagina's and body redistributing somewhere else?

ugh!  too late.  already got that vision in my head.  its like the brady bunch song is stuck there....but lots worse.
