Just joking about the EPO, but it got me thinking: most of us have a bit of athletic potential but we ended up playing it safe and going to college, getting a safe job and living a safe, normal life.

Professional athletes are not only hugely talented but they also had the courage to ignore the safe life path and take a risk that they could earn a living by a different, less conventional route with far less security and huge risks of it not working out. Basically, these people are different. The temptation to take PED's and the likelihood that they will take a risk is probably different for people with this personality trait compared to us regular people.

Just a thought....

this post disgusting.  it is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with athletics at ALL levels today.

Are you serious? I'm not saying they should take drugs, I'm just wondering if the sort of people who go into professional sport might have such a strongly competitive and risk-taking personality that they are more likely to succumb than other people.

It's a bit like when Clinton got caught with his pants down, apparently highly intelligent ambitious men are more likely to have affairs because it's a flaw associated with that personality type....interesting how self-destructive traits can be linked to positive personality traits.

Ummm you should probably look at other underlying factors before you introduce peds into your theory. Perhaps then you may realize how flawed it is. Courage ....... I'm sure that's what some 13 Dominican kid is thinking when MLB scouts start waiving cash around in his moms face in their one room dirt floor rat infested home. Hell, don't even leave the US. Come on to jack football game at 11. At first it's fun to watch the moms and dads thinking there 7 year old is gonna play in the SEC. But when they start yelling at them and berating them in front of everyone it's not so funny anymore. And I kinda wonder what they do behind closed doors. Courage to ignore the safe path. For f@cks sake.

The courage bit refers to their desire to go into competitive sport, nothing to do with PED's. I think you've completely misunderstood the point I was making about some of these people being natural risk takers.

I agree and disagree with both David and taper boy.

Thing is now days, these 'people' don't really need to take risks. If they are good enough as teenagers they are on everyone scout and agents radar. They get drafted and sign massive contracts. I think for most of them, it's trying to stay on top where they have these devils on the shoulders.

i think as they get older and start seeing others stepping ahead of them on the depth chart  is when things start to change. this may not necessarily be true in  cycling, but alot of these guys are completely uneducated. If they can't stay near the top of the depth chart, they may have to enter, THE REAL WORLD. Like getting a real job.  What are they trained to do? Hit a ball, throw a ball, etc. To Taper-boys point, this is what is wrong with sports. No one cares about who is the most consistent. We care about who can hit a ball the longest, who can run the fastest RIGHT NOW. This is our society. It's a what have you done for me lately society. Its a ESPN highlight of the night society.

Right. You're smarter than all here. So I hope this means that you'll be taking your coward excuses for a ped story somewhere else. Good luck to you, Davie.

I'm not sure what's got into you! I was just musing about what makes supposedly intelligent capable people do something as stupid as Lance did and you interpret that as me making excuses on behalf of cheaters. I'm not trying to pick a fight, I really don't see why you've gone off like this????

A girl goes away for a day and a family feud has broken out.  Really?  What's up with that?   David, realize that Fatty is tapering which often makes him cantankerous.  Certainly not an excuse, just a possible explanation.  Kiss and make up.  I'd like to see civility returned before the close of the weekend.

Julia, details!!!!

Yes Julia we need details. Excited to read you race report. Congratulations.

I have caught a bug or something. I spent the half night on the potty doing the big D. My entire body hurts. This is not good less than two weeks before the big race. Spending the day in bed.

You're right.  I must have still been delirious!!  45:45!!!! or 45:48!!!  No beginning timing mat and I started two rows back which accounts for the difference.  No matter, either one is a PR!!!

Not sure it's a breakthrough, but I would say it was 1) a strong desire to make something of 2012 and 2) the mental commitment to embrace the pain through the whole race, not just at the start or finish.  There was one point yesterday where the suffer factor was very high and I started smiling through it and another where the grunt factor was high and I just rolled with it into the finish line.  I am sure i looked possessed, but I honestly didn't care about anything but sub 46'.
