Charlotte and Mark, it might be confusing but it's the best way to go. I fought the idea myself until it was broken down in front of me. Mark, in your case things are different because of your location, you are entering the season and not finishing one, therefore you should be in the "general preparation" phase of you training. This is increasingly longer runs and rides at MAF or similar, little speedwork.

Charlotte, your lack of consistency for many reasons can only be mitigated with frequency, look for little niche spots of time where you can go for a quick run, ride your CT and pretty much forget the pool for a while.

Went to my orthopedist yesterday and he says no stress fracture. Just a very very tight calf due to internal muscle damage from my full and half marathons, even after two weeks of no running. Told me to take a few more weeks off of running (do other stuff like bike and swim) and go get it deep-tissue massaged. Today had a half hour massage on just my calves. Painful does not adequately describe it. The time spent on the left calf hurt but was bearable. The right calf was just torture. Very sore now.

I set up the drainer downstairs and will hop on tomorrow.

Not sure of my goals next year. I'm still thinking. Definitely Boston and another marathon in the fall. Not so sure of a long triathlon. I think a common reaction when finishing a HIM is "I can't wait to do a full IM." That wasn't my reaction. And if I'm not into it, it doesn't make sense to sign up. Most likely I will sign up for another Olympic in late spring and a sprint in August.

I'm thinking back about my training for my July HIM. I enjoyed the group bike rides. Didn't really enjoy long solo rides. And I'm convinced the bike training helped me as a runner. So I think my goal when it gets warm again is to rejoin the bike group even if I'm not doing a long tri.

I was just about to ask you what was going on injury wise.  Yay for no stress fracture.

I didn't have the IM sentiment when I finished the HIM either.  I'm thinking maybe 2014 if I am still doing tris.

Chris, that IS REALLY GOOD NEWS. I cannot stress enough how much balance you will get from cross training. I know running is your thing but to be a good triathlete (regardless of distance) you have to step off the bike in a good spot and strong. Only way to do that: be a strong cyclist and at least an average swimmer.

Catching up from the last couple of days.  Weather is beautiful here so getting some unusually nice runs outside this weekend.  Very strange for November in MI.  Tomorrow however, the other shoe is supposed to drop.  Back into the 30's and rain.  My plans for getting back to the pool were quickly tossed aside this week as I put a fairly large gash in the back of my hand requiring a trip to the emergency room and a bunch of stitches.  No permanent damage, just cant swim for a couple of weeks and will prolly get a nice scar out of it.  Hope it doesn't affect how I hold my gun this coming weekend (right Jim?) Wink

Good luck today racers!

Chris - Glad you got good news on your leg.

Scott - Sucks about your hand.  Hope you heal quick!

I'm enjoying the same great weather.  Went for a ride towing my toddler behind me then ran for 60' on the treadmill.

ernestov - 2012-11-11 2:00 PMCongratulations Joe! Great time, let's hear about it.
Need to think a lot more about today before posting a RR. Conditions were ideal, nutrition was good, but stuff happened. At mile 3, my hip went into overload and the piriformis became bad. By mile 6, I thought about a DNF, but kept going after I saw my wife. Whatever I did to modify my stride caused all kinds of other problems from groin pain to alternate side hip pain. Stayed with the pace group until hills from miles 19-21. Not rollers, but steep ups and downs. Hit mile 22 and a wallop of hamstring cramp set in. Stopped for a second, but that was it. Ran home with no stops. Need to look at my splits and see what happened. Mark: 20' improvement is possible when you cr$p the bed a year ago. All: I suffered during this race and ran with pain and discomfort. I'd be lying if didn't tell the group that there where numerous point when the sage advice and support of this group carried me through. Not just from an accountability perspective, but sharing your stories and struggles have meant a lot. More to come.

yesterday, i only did crossfit for 30 minutes.  today, 33 minute run outside before family activities; twins were confirmed today.

I still have a question:  During this off-season, it is wise to continue with MAF or is it better to do speed work - aerobic vs anaerobic runs??

Updates after today's run.

Joe- Glad to hear that you are being honest with yourself and the group about the race. It helps us all learn.  Can't wait to hear your analysis.  The marathon is not a race to go into lightly.  Sounded like you prepared yourself properly, and I'm happy to hear you had the mental fortitude to make yourself finish.  Perhaps writing your report will shed some light.

Congratulations Joe, and thanks for the honesty.  That really helps me out.

Scott, sorry about the hand.  Fast healing vibes coming your way.

I bailed out of a 13 mile run today at 11 miles.  I had an intermittent sharp pain in the inside of my left thigh and in my left knee.  Not sure what it was all about, but I didn't want to take any chances.  I'll see how it's feeling tomorrow before my workout.
