Spun the wheels on the cross bike a bit after work. Trying to reactivate the muscle fibers again, I'm feeling great. Probably the best Ironman recovery so far, I think having a massage right after crossing the line had a lot to do with it (the other two times I skipped).

gobluedds - 2012-11-11 7:59 AM

Catching up from the last couple of days.  Weather is beautiful here so getting some unusually nice runs outside this weekend.  Very strange for November in MI.  Tomorrow however, the other shoe is supposed to drop.  Back into the 30's and rain.  My plans for getting back to the pool were quickly tossed aside this week as I put a fairly large gash in the back of my hand requiring a trip to the emergency room and a bunch of stitches.  No permanent damage, just cant swim for a couple of weeks and will prolly get a nice scar out of it.  Hope it doesn't affect how I hold my gun this coming weekend (right Jim?) Wink

Good luck today racers!

You will find a way. It does give you a built in excuse incase you develope Buck Fever. I have been hearing some good reports, especially over where you hunt.

Joe- GREAT RACE and good report.

RR to follow, but being my first Oly, I PR!

Had a conservative goal of 2:55 for my race. Came in at 3:00:45.Both happy and slightly disappointed, but had a blast. 9 out of 13 in my category (is that MOP or BOP?Wink). 419 out of 611 overall.

There were a few factors that affected me. After my last few weeks on training in nice 60s and low 70s temp, race was at 80s and humid. But worse than that was the 25 mph winds (30 mph gusts).

Swim went well (63 percentile - first time above 50 percentile in any discipline in any race!). Bike went well the first half, but the last 8 miles was done against a 20-25mph head wind. It just killed me. I normally enjoy the bike portion of a race, this time I couldn't wait for it to be over, including kidney pain (first time, and it went away as soon as I dismounted).

Began the run in so-so shape (got a pain in my side after 1/2 mile), and wanted to stop almost immediately. Did the first 4 miles in my target speed, the 5th mile slower, and the wheel came off during the last 1.6 miles.

Overall, happy with the race all things considering. The quality of competition was significantly higher than my run of the mill sprints (there was Oly and HIM distances), so expected a BOP result. It also gave me lots to think about for next year.

Oh, yes, on the way out signed up for an Oly in June 2013 (there were giving a nice free running visor, I just couldn't say no). So I guess I am sticking to this triathlon thing.

Andy, how are you feeling this week? Squirmy perhaps? hehe. Been there, done that... Relax, Arizona is a beautiful race, the weather this weekend promises to be PERFECT. You will do well, as long as you stick to your plan.

Never forget the golden rule: if you can't genuinely smile, you're going too hard.

Samy, congratulations on your first Oly. Just like any new distance, a learning experience.

Gabe, have you decided about next year's schedule yet?

I want to propose Ironman Arizona 2014 to the entire group as a destination race. It is two years from now, PLENTY of time for absolutely everybody in this group to make it and have a wonderful race.

I'll coach all the takers for twenty weeks prior to the race. Who's in?

2013 Goals

Main Goal: To finish the year as excited about triathlons as I finished this year

Schedule: Open, but first HM (Feb). Hoping for 5 tris,  2-3 olys, 2-3 sprints

1st quarter: With training for my first HM beginning in 2 weeks, the first quarter will be run focused. Looking forward to some runs at pace. I believe that MAF built a good foundation, but also think that being a new runner and racer, I need to train my body to "push it".  Don't worry E, will continue to MAF most of my runs, I know my base needs lots of help still.

2nd quarter: Aiming for my first 2013 race (sprint) in April, with my Oly in June. Probably will focus on the bike. My runs on the last races have been sub-par, and I believe it comes from too fast on the bike. Planning to add distance to my long rides and maybe find a group that I can ride with.

3/4 quarters: Train, race, relax, enjoy. And hopefully move into MOP status for good. I want to be average!Wink

Year review: Want to gibe a GREAT THANK YOU to Ernesto and the rest of the gang. I can safely say that one of my best decision on my first year as a triathlete was joining this group. The knowledge, motivation, and support given by all members help make this year a VERY VERY fun year. 1st triathlon, 1st international distance, 1st podium, and countless training related firsts. But most important, had a blast doing it (from training to racing), and plan to do it for a long time.

On the other hand, that same motivation and support given by the group is one of the main reasons I will stick with triathlons, which means lots of money being spend. As you are part of the reason why, I expect a few checks on the mail to cover expenses.

hmmm... tempting...

Cannot commit to it now. Was planning maybe to do my first HIM in 2014 and a IM in 2015 if everything fell into place.

My main limitation is the kids (or should I say getting my wife on board knowing she will have to take care of the kids while I train). So although it might be too early for me, and will definitely accept a similar offer for a 2015 IM, I will not say no right now. Very tempting...

Hmmm, anxious is probably a good word to describe how I feel right now going into next weekend.  Maybe a small bit of stress on top of it.  I'm running crazy this week trying to get the house cleaned up and ready for my mother-in-law who is watching our kids.  I've been at the rink coaching hockey every day for almost 3 weeks now (I coach both my kids teams and our entire association's & high school goalies), and I'm there tomorrow and Wednesday as well.  I've got parents upset with me that their kid's team's head coach is missing two games this weekend, so I've been overcompensating making sure the assistant coaches can handle it.  And of course add to that the usual taper madness.  I'd better start packing, at least I started a list!

2013 goals and races have been floating around in my head a little, but I think my entire next year's season depends on the outcome of this weekend's race.  If things go really well, I may want to do another.  If things go really bad, I may still want to do another to make up for it.  Or there's a slight possibility (like less than 1% chance) that I might not want to ever do another 140.6.  So my current plan is to wait until a week or two after Arizona, then I'll come up with a plan.  I am however already signed up for the Goofy Challenge in January at Disney World.

Who's in?

I have been thinking either IM AZ or Lake Placid in 2014 for my first. I believe that you have just tilted the scales.

Getting in Arizona is pretty darn hard, if it goes online it sells out in a whoping three to five minutes. Worth every penny though.

Scott,

I just read about your hand, I hope you heal quick! I must have skipped a few posts.

No lasting damage, just looks like I have a big ugly caterpillar crawling across my hand right now.

The idea of running IMAZ has limited appeal to me right now.  I have wanted to do a full IM race for a long time, but this year's training and my new focus on running has me rethinking what my future will be in endurance sports.  Who knows though, everything could change again come spring 2013 when I see all my friends out tri training.  I'm fickle that way. Maybe I need to make plans to get out there to volunteer 2013 and see everyone in action.

Jim- The trail cam set up near my blind has shown 8 different bucks in the last three weeks ranging from a spike to an eight point.  Hopefully at least one has stuck around the area for this weekend.  If he shows up, I'll get him.  Tested the hand last night and no shaking Wink.

Samy- Great to hear that you finished your race and have already signed up to do another one. Way to keep yourself motivated!
