Well it looks like I am going to have to go on a diet!! Darn it!!! Even with all of the training I am still putting on weight. I have now gained 7 pounds and I am feeling it on my knees. So here goes a last ditch 12 week calorie cutting. I know how to do it but I was really hoping the shear volume training would allow me to eat however I wanted. NOT SO MUCH! I am so there with you. Was just discussing this with my trainer tonight that I need to cut A FEW calories to try to drop some more weight before the race. I have lost 11 pounds since May but really need to drop at least 10 more!! Happy calorie counting!! |

Master 1655 NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread My lack of loosing weight is due to my current obsession with Rocky Road icecream. Melissa - You have amazing dedication to run 111 laps!! Didja switch direction after 55? Training is going OK. Getting in all the workouts but my swim is getting slower. I don't get it. Running is my weakness but I must admit that having a specific workout for the runs, whether it's intervals or strides or whatever, makes the time go by much faster. Longest bike so far is 3.5 hrs. and will be increasing to 4 after my recovery week. The plan Im on doesn't have too many bricks - 2x per month or so...Im gonna go with it! Hope everyone's training is going well!! |

I LOVE your quote...what a cutie Katie must be and what an amazing person you must be to be training for an Ironman with a 2 year old!! To all those that have children and train for this race, I tip my hat!! I don't know how you do it!! |

Elite 3371 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread TexasMPGal - 2009-08-10 1:06 PM . that's a the reason I picked IMFL. Some people dislike the constant peddaling (i.e. no coasting) that come from pushing the flats, but I'd much rather pedal constantly than do big climbs. x2 Even thats more incline than I'm used to riding. Its so unbelievably flat where I live. IMFL was an easy choice. |

Wow, talk about a mouse on a wheel....If you can mentally do that - Ironman shouldn't be too bad Hmmm I cut back from Ice cream to Raspberry Fudge tort frozen yogurt. Now I just gotta stop eating the 600 calorie pint in one sitting. Hope everyone's training is going well! |

Extreme Veteran 437 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I am asking for a little help if anyone wants to give some please. Trying a reality check. Do you think I really will be able to complete the race considering where I am at in my training. Yesterday I did a run walk of 2.5 miles, mostly walking Today I did 20 miles taking 3 breaks to stretch out a little. I have swam approx 7 times in the past year. Total workouts in the past 6 months is probably 10 or so Please be honest |

Member 34 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Have you biked at all. How long did the 20 miles take to run/walk. From what you have said i think you might be in for a rude awakening. Have you done anything like an IM or Half ironman before? I never want to discourage anyone but i want to be honest also. Need a little more info. |

While I wouldn't say your numbers need to be where mine are right now I would say they definitely should be in the half iron realm. It sounds like you have no base in any of the three right now and that is worrisome. You would have to be icredibly diligent and wise between now and the race to get within finishing quality. While many people are on 13 week IM plans they went into them, foe the most part with at least oly if not HIM bases or really solid long distance cycling or running bases with some natural, ie no struggles with the swim. Honestly, I'd be pretty concerned based upon what you've shared.Edited by TexasMPGal 2009-08-13 10:22 PM |

Expert 764 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm gaining (or just not losing) weight, too. I'm out of town this month and staying in a hotel, so my usual good food habits have kind of slipped toward eating whatever they serve at the dining hall. Then I end up snacking in my room because I'm just so DARN HUNGRY!!!! I'm getting more calories than I need, though. *sigh*...looks like it's time to stop buying the snacks. If they're not there, I can't eat them. PS. Anybody know any flat cycling routes in Montgomery, AL? I've been riding into some hilly areas and it's killing my legs! I need to practice speed on flats! |

Total workouts in the past 6 months is probably 10 or so Please be honest What were your workouts like before the HIM ? What is your athletic background ? If you were a stud with the workouts prior to your HIM training then you might have a chance at getting the training up to speed but if your HIM training were also subpar or if you had very little endurance background beforehand, I think that you are asking a lot of your body to get up to speed with only 13 weeks to go. Three of those weeks will probably be dedicated to taper so to go from pretty much 0 to IM in 10 weeks is asking a lot. Some folks on this board can do that but some folks on this board are also studs to begin with What was your HIM time ? With the lack of workouts so far, you are looking at at IM time of at minimum 2x HIM + 1 hour. Whatever that number is will allow you to guage your IM time and your 17 hour buffer. However, that equation is usually reserved for people who have been training with due diligence. The $550 registration fee is a lot to give up but an injury or a really bad IM experience might cost a lot more. I personally would not do it but I may not be as gifted an athlete as you are. |

Extreme Veteran 437 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread GREAT advice thank you! I missed quite a few workouts before the HIM as well. Not worth going into why just that it did happen. My HIM time was a slow 6:15. Most of the run was actually a walk. I went very easy on the bike so I had as much left in the tank as possible for the run/walk. The swim was just an easy, let's just get through this and get on to the real part of the race With a wetsuit ( I know it is in the gulf) it will be a bit better unless there are big waves. Have been doing tris for quite a while but not anything this long. I will do this. I will continue training and see how things go as the race gets closer. No need to make the decision now. If I do it I am thinking just sneak in under 17 and I am happy BTW if I do it I will be the one with the bell on my bike ringing it and saying hello lol |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Well RBR it sounds like you made up your mind so good luck, just be careful ramping up so you don't get hurt. As far as ice cream goes I am a chocolate peanut butter fan myself. My recent weakness is "Extreme Moosetracks covered with Reece's Chocolate peanut butter hard shell" YUMMY! I have put away the ice cream as well as a large quantity of the food I was eating. I am feeling hungry but the weight appears to be flying off. I guess all the exercise really is working. My stomach was just stronger willed then my muscles. Hopefully I can hold out for 12 more weeks and get to a decent race weight. So far so good though. I was afraid that I was going to cut back and the scale wouldn't move. Have a great weekend everyone. |

Extreme Veteran 536 Russiaville, IN | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread 6:15 is not that slow, I'm not sure how you pulled that off walking and riding slow? I think I remember reading that you double your HIM time and add an hour that will give you an estimate of time, so that would put you at 13:30 if you are way out of shape add a couple more hours your still in the 15-16 range. If you can get back to HIM shape or a little better you can make it. In 2007 I had to walk almost the entire marathon due to stomach problems and ended up walking a 6:39 marathon and still finished in 14:10 so it can be done but you will have to be decent in at least 2 of the 3 sports. good luck, Ron |

Basically I plan to run and bike as much as I can. Then start using a swim trainer the last month before the race. I am 60 miles round trip from a swimming pool so actual swimming is not an option for me. |

YOWZA Just over 14 hours with a 6:39 run that is some fast swimming and biking, congrats. I was figuring out possible times and am thinking I better prepare myself for walking most of the run and turning in a 6+ hour time for that. |

I did the race in 06 when it was super cold and last year when it was pretty nice. '06 on the bike I wore tri shorts, tri top, arm warmers, bike shirt and a long sleeved throw away tech shirt plus some of those $1 gloves you get at walmart. Threw the gloves off within 12 miles, threw the tech shirt off at mile 80ish and wore the rest of it the whole ride. On the run I put a long sleeved tech shirt under my tri top and wore a wind vest the second loop 08 it was MUCH warmer, tri top-arm warmers-bike shirt. THrew the arm warmers off aa special needs. On the run I brought a long sleeved tech shirt with me....just tied it around my waist and I put it on under my tri top towards the end of the first loop. Both years I had bought wind vests off the super clearance rack at Marshalls for like $6. I am super slow. If you are fast you will not need to worry about being cold on the run so much. Also last year daylight savings time rolled over the night of the race (sat night) so we had more daylight than we will this year. |
