Bron-When does your daughter need the results? I'll take part in her science project.

Kyla-It looks like Jorge's workouts are getting harder. I know what you mean about the negative thoughts sometimes. Good music helps (or the kids coming in to hang out with me.).

Heidi - thanks for participating!!! She needs the data within 2-3 weeks. If you have any questions, let me know! I hope your smashed knee is okay!!

Speaking of knees...mine is hurting and the pain keeps moving from the inside through the knee cap and now on the outside.  This has been going on for about two weeks.  The pain has slowly moved places.  I am not sure why.  I have stayed off the bike.  But have kept running.  It doesn't hurt WHILE I run but does hurt later.  I hit the ibuprofen and should ice it tonight.

Just a thought: I am envious of people who are training for IMs in 2009.  I can't wait to say I am training for one!

Hang in there with Jorges program guys!   Its good stuff, and it will get results!  I did alot of harder stuff last winter/spring and I think that it payed off.   Plus it keeps you motivated instead of logging all mindless hours on the trainer in the winter!

kkcbelle - 2009-01-19 6:31 PM Thanks for the pick-me-up words, Greg and Heidi!! Yeah -- Greg I totally told myself today, "If this was easy, everyone would do it. It's not easy, therefore it's putting you ahead of others. You WILL see results in your races next year." One of my goals for the winter was to work on my biking, so I need to remind myself that this was all part of my greater plan! And Heidi, when I bumped my radio station from NPR to tunes, it helped a ton. It's amazing the difference music makes!! I actually listen to NPR a lot when I run (geeky, I know), but I scroll around stations as my mp3 player has an FM tuner. When things really get tough, that's when I find my Foo Fighters and other energetic tunes on my mp3 to lose myself!! It's good to know that the workouts will get harder gradually. I saw something somewhere at 115% and it sent me into a small panic!! j Good luck repeating week 4, Heidi. You'll do great once your knee is on speaking terms with you again!

I asked Jorge about the 115% of LTHR because I cannot hit that doing the intervals.  I can hit 100% sometimes and a little over, but even then my average is less than 100%.  He told me that is one of the limitations of training with HR vs. power.  At that point he said that I should just go as hard as I can and get the RPE up.  In reality, I may be pushing harder using HR than if I had a power meter! The current video here on BT that talks about power has some comments about this.  It might be worth listening to if you have the time.

Very very true.  Power is real time feedback, HR is delayed.  If you do a 30 second quick spin, watching power, and watching HR, power changes the first second you apply more force.  HR lags though.  If you watch, by the time your done with that 30 sec interval, your HR may just be catching up, or it will spike when your interval is over, and then drop.

Training with HR has its limitations because essentially your HR top out is your HR top out.  What you are training within your HR zones is your power, your speed.  Those can change.  Your max HR will rarely change much if at all if you have done your time trial test properly.    If you have a speedometer, it may be beneficial to monitor that also when you do your testing and you can set speed zones.    that is how I trained most of last year when I wasnt working with power.  HR was a  secondary number when doing intervals.

Makes sense. I read his thread before I started and definitely can see why he is so into RPE if you're not using power... the HR lag has become quite apparent as I am more aware of HR stuff on the bike. So in those 4-5' intervals, I know it takes a good 1:30 or so for my HR to catch up, but I try to find that effort early on that holds the range he is targeting. When I'm doing the 97-103% intervals, I can get above 100% and hold it for those short times. I can see where 115% would be just all-out.

So how much does a power meter really cost? (I'm scared that I just asked that!)

Thx for pointer to power video. I'll check it out!

Well, it depends on which one you buy of course, but the one I would like is the PowerTap Wireless and I think they are around $1200.

I have never been close to the podium for a race and I have never won my ag, though I placed at one or two sprints, so I don't know if I could ever justify buying one.

Of course, I can't really justify the aero wheels I just purchased, except that I sold my mountain bike and used the money from it to keep the money in "biking"!Smile

Last year I bought a powermeter for my trainer (only works on trainer) for $40 new.  I wasn't sure how accurate it was but atleast you have something to gauge your effort with.  Then this year I found a used cycleops (non wireless $150 ebay) and found out the cheap meter is within 10watts! Now that I have a meter I don't know how I would train inside without it.

Yea I got lucky, its not the newest version but I'm with you tough to shell out $1500 for a meter.  If your around in the summer we are always looking for more people to train with.  The local bike club did a race your way that went across Indiana it think its called RAIN.  They tried to get me to do it last year but 160 miles did not fit into my IMKY training plans.  Sounds like a blast though so I may try it this year if no other races are coming up.  What is your brother-in-laws name? I am on a couple boards with UF people.

Hmmmm... maybe it's worth surfing Craigslist and ebay for a used powermeter. Didn't even think of that (duh). I got my trainer for just $75 on Craigslist, a Cyclops that has been perfect. I'm with you, Greg... can't justify the cost for the hobby. Shelling out for a road bike 2-ish years ago was enough. No way will I even think about a tri bike anytime soon, if ever. Aerobars, maybe, but so far so good just motoring along on the road bike.

I had a couple friends do RAIN.  One year they were miserable due to the heat and the next year, they got a break from the heat and a westerly wind which pushed them along pretty well.  I will look you up when I come out later in the spring/summer.  I bought my aero wheels from some racer down near Dayton.  Ohio has a strong bike community.

Mark Smith is my brother-in-law.  He works with the equestrian school.

I'll likely do a sprint here in late May. Might do a half-mary in March but it's doubtful unless my training buddy really wants to and talks me into it. If my Y has an indoor tri and it's not on a ski lesson day for the kiddos, I'll probably do it.
