Redknight - 2009-01-08 7:40 AM Tony can we keep your wife's avatar. Much better looking . Well maybe except for the little one in yours Tracy. Sounds like you are having some fun again. That's great. Nice to have that little challenge. The hockey I am playing this year is with guys my own age. Is it ever nice to play against someone in their 50's instead of the youngsters ( 20 - 30) I seem to have played with all my life. I am actually better than a lot of them. That, I know is thanks to playing with the young guys for so long and having so work hard to keep up. That and of course the great conditioning I get from tri training.

HA, I will let her know.

Man I would LOVE to play hockey, something I have always wanted to do.  That whole skating thing would get in the way I suppose though.

Oh yeah forgot to tell everyone that I will be at Disney World next week, temps in the 70's woo hoo, can't wait.

Looking forward to doing my 8mi run on Sunday in shorts and a T-Shirt.

Though when I get back I have to figure out how to get from my house to work on inaguration day.  Every road/bridge/etc will be closed.  I had planned on riding or running but looks like even some of those routes will be closed.

I would soooo love to play hockey...not so good on the skates though.  Hockey players must have nice legs...don't think I've ever seen one in shorts though...hhmmmm.  The thing I ponder.

FLORIDA - ok, we get to not like you next week!  I moved back here 2 years ago from living in Orlando for 5 years.  Sighhhhh...I so miss the weather!  I love the warm sunshine!

Question - how do ya'll keep yourselves entertained while swimming?  If there is someone else, I'm ok because I can "race" them in my head.  But, I was in the pool alone this morning, and the 1000 yds almost killed me from boredom!

I have the same problem also, 1000M is about all I can stand in the pool.  OWS is different you have that whole drowning thing to worry about so it keeps you occupied.

I have been seriously considering a swimMp3 player to keep me entertained.

I can run all day without music but contstantly looking at that stupid black line is dull.

I guess I'm too focused on trying not to drown to think about companionship...   Then I always forget how many laps I've done, so I find myself trying to remember if I'm on lap 1 or 2.

Need to find a watch you can use to count laps, I have an old polar S-150, just have to hit the big red button.

I count lengths rather than laps.  Knowing one end of the pool is odd and the other even helps me stay on count a little better.  As far as entertainment - well the voices in my head usually take care of that for me .   Racing the people next to me isn't all that rewarding - it's usually one older lady that backstrokes for an hour or an older guy that swims tarzan style (head out of the water).  Needless to say, I can't keep up with either one of them

If you want music, I saw elsewhere on this site a reference to swimman.com (??) that can waterproof your iPod Shuffle.  They do it internally, so no bulky case.

Well as far as playing hockey goes Yeah the skating thing really helps. It is also better if you don't have to lean on a chair ,your hockey stick or someone else. Speeds up the game. I will say it is a good thing they make the corners round. That way you can just ride the boards around them instead of slamming into them Oh and yeah hockey players have great legs its just to cold to uncover them.

I'm with Matt on the swimming. I usually get in around 1500 to 1900m and the voices in my head are telling me all sorts of weird things. Like try not breathing and see if that makes it more exciting (I try not to listen to that particular voice.) or try swimming with only one arm. I do hear music but I think that might be within the pool area. Not sure where it comes from.
Actually for the most part I am just sort of brain dead and try to remember which lap I am on. I generally use a couple of swim fins to mark my distance. E.G. I flip one fin over each time I do 10 lengths. Then I just flip the fin back over at the end and count those, mutlipe by 10 and have my distance. That way I only have to count to 10 each time. I do try and think about my stroke and play a bit with making sure it is proper especially toward the end. Once I am into my rythym it is so easy. But it certainly wasn't last year.

I think swimming is just a mental game.  Don't let music run your training for the pool as well!?  We already let it control our runs....

Ahh that's why I'm not getting very far, I forget the repeating strokes...

I suck at swimming.  It's ok to slow down while biking, you can stop; it's ok to slow down while running, you can stop... but with swimming, I cannot slow down, let alone stop - I sink.

I gave up my IPOD while running early last year,  the strap broke and I haven't used it since.  I think my runs are more enjoyable now.  Maybe swimming will be the same later but for now I think I need some music.

I probably have my iPod on 75% of solo runs, only because I want to be taken completely by surprise by the car that slams into me from behind.  Never on group runs.

No music swimming.

Just got back from a noon swim.  It felt great to be in a warm pool. The pool I usually go to is SO COLD!   But today I was back at my "lunch time pool" (yes I swim at multiple places, depending on where I am at that time of day) and their water is about 5 degrees warmer.  Not too warm but not an ice bath either.

Matt I tried your counting length technique, sorry to report I get just as confused that way.  I am mentally challenged I think.  But that is not new news to this group.

On a side note, I almost lost my swim bottoms in the pool.  I forgot to tighten the waist band on my bottoms and when I pushed off the wall they ballooned out and down!  To make things worse, I had my hands strapped to paddles and wasn't able to grab my bottoms very quickly. So I think I gave the life guard (and all the parents there for their kid's swim lessons) and nice mooning.   Cheers Embarassed

Pretty exciting training! Laughing

I always breathe on my left side for 2 lengths, then on my right for 2 lengths.  So I'm always doing 0-50 on my left, and 50-100 on my right.  It makes it much easier for me to keep track since as I'm returning to the wall, I know that I'm approaching to a 100 if I'm on my right.

My mind drifts and I start doing math problems based on the yardage I've done, and what I have left.  I start figuring out what % I've completed, figuring out my time for the last 100, 200, 400, etc. and on and on.

fun stuff.Undecided

That is too funny.  A similar thing happened to me in Hawaii in my infamous near drowing.  I lost my top, it literally got pulled off me in a riptide.  Three nice Marines saved me and I have to say the last thing I was worried about was flashing anybody (not that there is an awful lot to flash ).

On a separate note, the leader of our pack got me thinking about race plans quite a bit yesterday.  I'm officially done being wishy-washy on the whole "what should I do" thing.  Thanks for the kick in the a@#.  It is exactly what I needed!

Ran with my awesome running partner today...she definitely loves tempo thursdays better than recovery sundays! As a treat, I took her to the hilly trails near the beach for about a mile of the run and can she FLY!!! (off leash area)...So, I still have a nice buzz from that run, as I wolf down a turkey pasta lunch with no guilt

The whole thing about swimming for me is that since I am relatively new to swimming and have lots of room to improve, I am always working on some aspect of my technique, and don't have time to get bored! Also, I do odd math calculations in my head to figure out laps/distances...and my favorite thing to think about, is an upcoming race or event...and doing my own little scenarios...visualizing something positive is always helpful to me...I think music would be distracting for me...especially if the beat is either too fast or too slow! My rhythm is already kind of messed up and so I recently purchased a tempo trainer...another fun tool to hopefully give my swim workouts "new excitement!"

This is a really great group of peeps and i'm happy to be a part of swbkrun's group! For some reason, it makes me want to keep my calender days pink and filled in!

Have a great day everyone!

It kind of hurts my feelings/irritates me/drives me crazy that I actually need to provide a confirmation number to prove to you that I actually act of my intentions.  I've been signed up for Boston since it openend and the 1/2IM as of today. So what do you have to say to that boss?

Actually, I hope you don't.  You gave me the kick in the butt I needed to make the decision. It was driving me crazy for a long while.  Too many options, too many outs.  Now it is all about focusing on the training plan leading up to both events.

So go ahead and be my little brother.  I dare you. Laughing

Does it sound like Steve is a little obsessed with us and the sport. I like to think so. He sure kept us going last year and if you think he is obsessed now wait until he has a major injury like a zit.

Keep up the great mentoring Steve.
