Middle Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I know I bought gloves. I see the neoprene booties & swim caps are specifically allowed. I do remember my hands didn't function in T1, so maybe I did not wear them. |

Per this years FAQ's: 8) Are swim booties and neoprene swim caps allowed during the swim? 9) What is the rule on wetsuits? Edited by lakeview 2011-10-18 10:36 AM |

We all went and bought gloves & booties, and the other guys bought hoodies also. I did not buy a hoodie. Even with the benefit of gloves, I realized in T1 that my hands were too cold to do fine more tasks like zippers. Just my n=1, YMMV I've heard folks mention that booties cause a bit of drag on your legs...Any thoughts?no they don't... u need to get the right size! I am usually L or XL for shoes/socks but I bought M booties They should fit fairly tight or else they are going to be full of water while you swim (kind of like a wetsuit)! Did you go for tri booties, or something from a dive shop? I've heard dive stuff holds up better (i.e. for running on asphalt). BTW- Water temp @ Wrightsville Beach NOAA buoy has been 72.7-73.4 F past 24hrs. I may be a tough old Michigander, but that doesn't have me rushing out to get hood/booties/gloves. Last 2 OWS's I've been fine in just my sleeveless & latex cap for >1hr in 74 & 70 F water. And +1 on face-planting the water for acclimatization just prior to swim start. Helps me a lot- esp when I can't get in a practice swim. regular booties (swimming); diving stuff are usually heavy IMO. I can't stand the cold so I will swim with my neoprene cap and booties regardless |

Member 47 Lewis Center, Ohio | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I'd swear there was some discussion about this before, but I can't find it. Sorry to ask it again. If we don't wear booties, is there someplace to stash an old pair of running shoes at the docks? Is it worth it given the time to get them on and then off with cold hands and tired muscles? |

I would definitely consider it water under the bridge at this point. Honestly, as long as they were just gloves and not webbed swimming gloves, I don't see how they could have helped your speed and if anything, probably slowed you down. Just think of how many people probably drafted the whole bike ride and really cheated! That should hopefully make you feel better... |

So you didn't cheat! Thanks, I knew we all rushed out and bought them that day, but I sure didn't find a reference this year. Man I was sick and about to write the RD telling him to pull down my results. THX for letting me off the hook! |

Member 72 Kodiak, AK | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Several iron newbie questions...please forgive me! 1. On the bike, do you start out with bottles in your cages and then just exchange at the aid stations? Thus, you don't want to have "good" bottles with you because they will be thrown away, right? How do these hand offs work anyway? Do you just throw your old bottle down? I know you can get penalties or even DQ'd for getting rid of things along the way. 2. Will anyone be out on any part of the course on Thursday or Friday? I'd love to have company for some short sessions...especially in the water. 3. I read somewhere (on here?) that the start will be delayed for the sunrise. Do we have any idea how long that will be? It would be nice to know so we can fine tune race morning nutrition. 4. Does anyone carry gels in a flask? I have done this during training and usually mix my gel with a bit of water to thin it a bit. But I worry that this will make it hard to tell how much I've consumed. Any experience with this? Thank you!!!! Bree |

253 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I plan to swim from the Blockade Runner (about halfway point of the IM swim) to the swim finish around 7:30 or 8 AM Friday the day before the race. I was wondering how we were going to start in the dark, but I will be pissed if it gets delayed much. Really would like a shot at finishing in the light of day . peace ben |

Yes, you'll discard your bottles at the aid station in a designated area, replacing the discards w/fresh bottles from the course. 2. Not sure about a specific BT group, but there will be plenty of easily identifiable folks on the course. Lots of folks will be swimming the course. YOu can find access in front of the Blockade Runner hotel for example. 3. Safety concerns will preclude us from starting in the dark. 4. I've just used gels & custables last year. No flask. Good luck. |

I plan to start with water in my aero bottle and a disposable "sports bottle" from similar to the one below. I'll add electrolytes of my choice to both. I'll refill my aero bottle before the bottle exchange, dump the disposable and get a new one. I realize I end up carrying more than necessary but I want the safety net (yes, not needed in October). 2. Will anyone be out on any part of the course on Thursday or Friday? Middle Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread When I do tri's with long runs to T1 or even long walks to the swim start (fearing glass or sharp rocks, rtc.) i use or stash an old pair of flip flops or crocks. You can run in them a short distance and I have no fear if they get lost or picked up as trash while I'm out racing. They look so bad that I've always had no problem finding them post race. |

New user 339 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Gloves were legal last year because of the cold. I am not sure what kind of swim booties you all are talking about but I can tell you scuba diving booties are made to go inside a set of fins, therefore they would be bulky and cause drag. I scuba dive and I could not even imagine wearing my 3mm or 5 mm to swim in. I honestly don't think you need this stuff this year. |

Per www.saltwatertides.com, sunrise will be at 7:28am. But it get's "light enough" 15-20 minutes before that. So my guess is start will be 7:05-7:15. 253 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Anyone ever get knee pain after changing cleats/ pedals? My old cleats/ pedals were old and worn out, so I had them changed from the old Look Keo style pedal to new Kobe- very similar style pedal and cleat. My lbs tried to get the cleats as exact as possible but I am now having medial knee pain on both legs. I did move the cleats out a bit, so that my feet are in toward the crank more, but haven't ridden since i did that. Maybe it's all in my head and part of the taper madness, but it does hurt. I am worried about riding 112 miles and causing some severe pain for the run and the future. Also, I did have the cleats with 4.5 degrees of float, but the new cleats are 9 degrees of float. Could this be adding to the issue? thanks ben |

I'd go back to the old set up. and yes, I even noticed when I changed shoes only to find out the LBS didn't put my inserts in the new shoes in the same position (had them reversed). so yes, it can be real discomfort, why jeopardize your race and all the training you've put in? |

253 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Well, I switched because I thought my lbs was competent enough to put the cleats back in the correct place . Also, my old pedals were making a LOT of noise- like making me want to kill myself noise, especially on long rides.
