Okay - I'm going to change the subject again.

I was curious if anyone here stopped at special needs on the bike?  I passed it up as I on;y filled by bags with "emergency" items and ended up not needing anything.  I was curious if the boxes were close enough that you just grabbed your own bag, or did the volunteers actually have it in their hands as you rode by?

I think I'm just going to leave a nutrition bottle in there and maybe an extra tube, BUT it would mean i HAVE to stop this year, I just don't want to wait very long.

I had to stop and search for my own bag at IMFL.  I can't store enough nutrition onboard to make it the whole ride so I had to stop.  I combine my special needs stop typically with my bike potty break, so I'm typically stopping anyway...makes me feel like it saves time.  I don't really feel like it wasted a lot of time even though I had to search for my bag.  Plus that year I took off my vest at special needs and stuffed that into the bag after I pulled out my nutrition.  Between the potty break and getting my bag and taking off the vest I probably still only spent 5-7' there.  If all I had to do was stop, find the bag, and swap out the bottles I bet it would be less than 2'.  If you don't have to search much you could be in and out in under a minute.

Are there any BT folks planning on a training weekend on the course this summer.  A friend and myself were thinking about making a short family vacation/training weekend either on the course or just near their (Seaside, Destin, Gulf Shores etc).  We really want some ocean swim time.

Or does anyone know of any group open water swims down there this summer.

Not sure but there should be no hurry.  Do not think it sold out this year.  It was a fun race and having Lance there made it a little more exciting!

enjoy, but be prepared for hills (Florida style).

Where I ride, there are parts wide open so even a small breeze seems brutal when is in your head, and other parts are well covered by trees so the wind does not seem to affect that much.

For those with previous experience, how is in general the IMFL bike course, mostly open or covered?

Thanks!!!!

My coach is doing an FLA Ironman training camp on Labor day weekend in PCB.  Roast at the Coast.

I know a lot of Atlanta area athletes that will be going.  I spoke to her last night and there are still some spots open for signup.  It will be a fun weekend!

I didn't think the wind was much of a factor last year except in a couple places. Last year the wind was coming in from the east. I think normally it comes in from the west. Going out on HWY 20 there was some head wind, but from what I remember the entire road is set pretty much in a forest and I don't remember the wind being overbearing. I know on the return trip there was a slightly tailwind which was nice.

The most wind I felt was the last 7 miles on Front Beach Road. There was a strong headwind and the buildings made it feel like I was in a wind tunnel.

I'm sure some years the wind is a factor, but there are trees along the majority of the course to help knock down the wind some.

Been slacking on the amount of training and mileage, need to kick it back into gear. Picked up Chrissie Wellington's book so hopefully this will help get me back and motivated Definitely looking forward to IMFL.

Anyone from the South Jersey area doing IMFL?

CRAZY PERSON!  the wind was though the first 56 mi.  Not the entire way but a good portion of the going out was in the wind.  Don't forget the last 7 miles either - brutal wind.

My mileage is starting to pick up as well. My pool was randomly closed the last 2 weeks in May and the first two in June. I will have to find a lake to swim in.

Howdy yall.  Just jumping in here to say Hi. I'll be in PCB this Nov as well, doing my 3rd ironman. Did IMFL in 08 and Texas just a couple weeks ago. Already recovered and have started training again. Should be able to get in a lot of quality summer training (Texas training was hit and miss). Looking forward to chatting with yall the next few months.

Question for the IMFLA vets - someone refresh my memory.  Can't we let other people get our bike and transition bags from transition?

With it being offical now the LSU vs Bama football game will be at 7 pm, first it makes my sub 12 hour finish that much more important, but I also want to make sure I don't have to go into transition after the race if at al possible.  Didn't they give us tickets or something we could give to someone else to get our stuff or did we have to get it ourselves?

Yes. Someone else can get your stuff as long as they have that ticket. It comes in your registration packet.

LSU/Bama game is always same day as IMFL. Yeah, gotta finish race early, then watch game while recovering. Then go to finish line to celebrate the finishers and the LSU victory.

In 2010, the game kicked off just after I started the run and I was able to get score updates through the entire run course as I was wearing my LSU tri kit.  Last year we volunteered and quite the tailgate set up about mile 1 of the run course and a few of our sub 12 hr friends were able to come back and watch the game with us.

yes after I think 5:30  use the ticket you get in your packet.  People on the run course have hd TVs out watching the game in the past

Maybe I didn't notice it because I was too busy drafting.

Maybe it was worse than I remember. The final 7 miles really stands out in my mind as the worst part of it.

I've done this race 3 times and each time I get to the last few miles (not sure if it is 7 however I am very sure of the last 2) and it surpises how tough this stretch is. It ain't that there are hills or that the wind is much stronger I think it's the anticipation.

Hey gang!

I am jumping on this thread because I am volunteering this year at IMFL. Goal is to race in 2013! I will be in the women's change tent during T2 so stop and say hey to me (where applicable LOL). I am excited to read about all of your goals and am getting excited for November to get here. I finally decided on a condo which makes me happy. Where is everyone staying?

Another one staying at Shores of Panama.

One word of warning to those who don't have a room yet...if you are planning to stay right near transition, start looking NOW!  After reading a bunch on here about how rooms are easy to get (and seeing the size of Shores of Panama and Laketown Wharf), I was in no rush to find a place.  Last week I started looking and all be damned, Laketown Wharf is completely sold out, and finding places in Shores of Panama was tough (and the people from VRBO don't answer requests).

Anyways, the one booking company that did have a few condos left Shores of Panama was http://bookings.bookthatcondo.com/

Brian you are right on.  I did the same thing and was anticipating staying at Laketown Wharf.  We went down there for Gulf Coast Triathlon and they said they were already booked up.  We scoped out the condos and my wife wanted to stay in Shores of Panama.  I found one that gave me a military discount so that was cool.  It still took 2 weeks to find a condo there on VRBO b/c like you said most condo owners would not return an email.  If you do have to get a condo that is a little ways down the beach you can always drive and park at Walmart.  It isn't far at all from there compared to most IM events.

We are staying at the Boardwalk Beach Condominiums.  if I didn't stay there, my condo would be somewhere on the run course, probably Surf Dr. again like we did last year. For your support, most of their day will be spend spectating during the run portion of the race, and if you stay at the Shores of Panama, thats quite a hike to Alvin's Island, Club La Vela etc.

Staying on Surf Dr. puts you rght on the run course by your bathroom, kitchen, etc., but still close enough to walk to/from transition if you needed and definitely close enough to walk to Mellow Mushroom/Wendy's etc. for food during the race if need be.
