Veteran 286 Brisbane, Australia | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed bradleyd3 - 2013-02-28 1:46 AM My motivation came back.....but I sometimes fall into the trap of doing a workout becuase it's on the schedule....and not for any other reason. I have 80 days until my IM. I feel, right now, that I could CRUSH a sprint distance, go 2:50 on an OLY, trudge thru a 70.3, and no way do a IM. My "time to get serious" has passed. I should have gotten serious earlier. But....since I can't change that, I have to keep pushing. Stuart....who drummed for Blink???? Since Travis Barker doesn't fly anymore, getting to AUS was out for him. Damn that's getting close! You're in the critcal period now. Everything you do builds on what you have already done, and anything you don't do will detract from race performance. Now is the time more than ever to be consistent, otherwise race day will suck a big one. Drummer for blink was the guy from Bad Religion I think. Can't remember his name. He was fine. Just a drummer - they don't sing so you don't really notice a difference. |

Member 36 Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed I've been having a really tough week. The mother in law was here to help out for the first 3 months with my son. This week, we started him in Day Care. I'm having a really hard time to find the time to get to the pool along with handling him. I'm kind of on my own with him for 3 days of the work week because my wife is a nurse and works 12 hour shifts. She's out for taking him or picking him up from Day Care on those days. How does everyone find the time to get their workouts in? I was close to getting two swim workouts in early in the morning on Monday and Wednesday (The days my wife has off). I got one in on Monday morning and couldn't yesterday because she was called in for a last minute mandatory meeting in the morning at work. I know this is the first week of "figuring out" how everything will work, but it just seems so crazy. |

The saying up late tradeoff really isn't one. The little one gets his bath by 8 pm and it asleep by 8:30. My wife and I fall out quickly after that. She is up at 4:30 am on her work days. Thanks! |

Somedays though, it just doesn;t work out and I have to remind myself that this is a hobby. |

It wasn't as awful as I anticipated. But i noticed something... Becides the snails pace(2:15 pace usually.. But he last 2 days probably more like 3 min pe 100 lol) anyway i noticed I have a looong glide once my tips enter the water. - Meaning once my arm is extended out underwater in front of me (not crossing my midline , I can actually count almost 2 seconds of gliding from start to finish before i begin pulling. Should my catch& pull be a continuous motion? I think you have to be careful about becoming a windmill but I do think it should be faster and not as much glide. 2 seconds is a long glide! Is your stroke really slow back towards your hip when your arm is extended?? |

Should my catch& pull be a continuous motion? yes....should be a continuous motion. When your left arm enters the water, your right arm/hard should be near your hip. When your left arm is starting the pull, your right elbow should be bent and ready to come out of the water. When your right arm is starting to enter the water, your left arm should be near your hip. It's hard to explain over a message board, but my arm thats out of the water is never extended up. You'll lose A LOT of momentum and power by "windmilling". In fact, I bend at the elbow when my hand grazes my hip, continue pulling with the left arm. When my other arm is out of the water, I basically hit the top of the water with my finger tips and then extend out once my arm is in the water. Whenever I'm struggling with form, I try to envision myself going through an "old school" door mailbox. Reach out until my pulling hand goes through the slot, "get small" in the water then reach through with the other arm. Unless your in an all out sprint, you shouldn't even make that much of a wake or splash in the water. |

As a newbie, I have total respect for you vets - it is freaking hard to get all the workouts and time in. I am getting 90% of my planned stuff in, but not without serious planning and help from the family (picking up kids, cooking, skipping dinner, etc). Quick question: anyone else feel the treadmill at the gym is 'off'? I need to check, but I think I discovered the clock is just a tad slow, thus making my run seem a tad shorter than actual. I have always thought something wasn't quite right. I will confirm on my next run, but I think it is almost a minute off during a 30 min run. Feeling strong - not "Stuart strong" but I am hitting the racing circuit next month with my first sprint. Look for me on ESPN highlights that night. Brad: you coming to Denton for that one on March 17th? Buy you a sandwich afterward if you make the trip...I will check your profile, maybe we are doing a couple of the same ones. As for motivation? I am weighing each day....that motivates me to work out! |

I'll run until my legs and lungs burn and think..."man, what a great workout" and then the mileage says 1.2 miles..... lol. I cannot run on a treadmill. I'll be in Dallas on Greenville Ave watching the parade with the wife and kiddos (and the SIL and niece/nephew). We do need to meet up (maybe at the Speedway) and go for a ride. The Speedway is about 5 miles around, wide open, and no traffic/stop light. We can go for 10-12 loops (more or less) so get some good bike mileage in.....Let's try to connect toward the end of the month/beginning of April.....maybe do a brick out there! |

I hit all 7,000 crunches I committed to in Feb! BOOM!!!! I loved it so much, that I am extending my abs/core workouts through March! Goal of 10,000!!!
I know we talked about a mileage challenge for March! Is everyone still interested in that? if so, let's set some parameters! |

New user 91 | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed I am down for a mileage challenge in March since I flopped on the abs challenge. Guess I will be making that one up this month as well. Parameters.... I know for our local Tri club division challenges they ask that all miles be logged each week. If running on an elliptical or treadmill all miles are divided by 3, same goes for riding a stationary bike. Miles logged on bikes on trainers count in full. Miles running outside or on a track count in full as well. Just a thought.. |

New user 37 OKC | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed Didn't quite hit my goal for my ab workout (fell short by 4 days worth). It felt great for the first half of the month, but as the number of reps increased, it actually felt like it was starting to hinder my cardio workouts. I ended up pulling the plug a couple days early so I could get my cardio back on track.
Speaking of cardio, not sure what kind of parameters we're setting here. I know I've already set a goal of getting the mileage of a HIM every week (i.e.- IM x2 by the end of the month). Not sure if we want to gimp treadmill or trainer rides. I'm all for doing workouts outdoors, but sometimes its just not feasible. In any case, I'm up for whatever. |

However, I am really staying swim focused because of the issues that I have had with my swim through my Indoor Triathlon season. April is the beginning of my Beginner Triathlete.com A Race training plan. |

But I think we all should come up with realistic mileage goals and put them out there based on what you are training for! You really shouldn't handicap treadmill miles or miles on the bike trainer in this challenge. Sometimes, especially this time of year, the weather and temperatures can reek havoc on training plans. I consider it a serious win if you still get on the treadmill and run your scheduled workout/distance/time or hop on the bike trainer for the same thing with the crappy weather outside. It can totally be an excuse and crutch for a lot of people. I know....I've done it before and it was a BIG contributor to me packing on the pounds. |

New user 91 | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed Sounds like handicapping the treadmill and stationary bike is out, which is fine, it was a suggestion. Are most of us working through a set plan for training either distances a week or time logged each week? If so we could use the challenge to meet our planned times/distances... That way we are all working towards are "A" race and not trying to over train for a challenge. Maybe we could all post what our March S/B/R distance/time should be and see who gets it all in.? |

Pro 4313 McKinney, TX | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed For the challenge, I think that we need to post what we are going to do when measure against that. Not necessarly the "I did more than you so I win" contest. Even though I'm going to win, no matter what. Regarding the bike trainer, I don't have a way to measure distance on it (I tried with my bike computer but after 1:15 last night it said I went 7 miles.....so that's not right. I usually do the average of 4 minutes per mile on the bike to figure distance....even thought I'm a little faster than that. So in my 75 minute ride on the trainer last night I basically did 18.75 miles. Thoughts? If we're going to post up the numbers....we need to get those in. And possibly do a "check in" every Monday to give your mileage thus far. |

My "A" Race is an HIM on 5/5 so I won't be tweaking too much of a taper or recovery. Then throw in the mix my daughter is getting married next weekend so getting all my training in this next week shall be a challenge in itself. |

Member 110 Denton, TX | Subject: RE: JFord Bradleyd3 2013 Spring Group- Closed concur: don't handicap trainers and 'dreadmills'....esp since one of us lives in Boston. I typically use a factor of 17mph for spin bike. I know sometimes it would be more, sometimes less based on my exerted effort and experience on the bike. I owe everyone an apology: I promised to win the core challenge, but lost. I had to trade that time for swim time. Good news - I doubled my swim distance in Feb vs Jan and bought some swim tools. I am actually getting excited about swimming. I will have to look up my March data for the challenge, but the point is moot b/c I am so going to beat my plan and you guys on the March challenge. Maybe we should discuss the April challenge. Brad: yeah I have ridden at TMS; let's plan on that. If you ever want to ride in north Denton county in horse country, let me know. We have a lot of good riding relative to cars and shoulders. Hitting a group ride of just tri guys tomorrow (2-3 hrs). Need to plan on some open water swim at Ray Roberts in April. oh yeah...haven't seen Cara post anything in a while. (crickets chirping...) She is probably too busy washing her workout clothes everyday I am guessing. That would be my reason. Edited by Todd13 2013-03-01 9:32 PM |
