Member 73 Roch-cha-cha | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed I worked NY Day, and now I have one heck of a sinus infection. And last night I was up way late because my running coach's wife went to the ED with chest pain (she's okay)...so sleep has been lacking. In any case, my first race of the year is tonight (snowshoe trail race). It's gonna be ugly on poor sleep and bad sinuses. But I'll get it done.
Happy New Year, gang! |

Veteran 419 clayton | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Hi Ernesto – thanks for letting me re-join if a little late. I first attended this group in January 2012 which was my first year in Tri and this group really helped motivate me throughout 2012 – looking forward to that again! Bio below: NAME: username: markhodges1973/ first name: mark STORY: I wasn’t really into sports as a kid. Coming from the UK there wasn’t much pressure to be involved either at school or socially. During College and my single life, sport was an excuse to drink beer from the comfort of a Pub. Come my thirties I thought keeping fit meant running after my growing children. After moving to the US with work I went to watch a College friend who was travelling the USA participating in ‘Triathlons’ – as you all know I had a reality check and was hooked as a spectator. I spent the next two years ‘researching’ triathlon and started with a couch-running program, then added in swimming and finally biking. This culminated in 2012 being my first year as an official Triathlete!
FAMILY STATUS: Married to Karen for 10 yrs. Have two girls, Chloe (13) and Libby (9) and Cockapoo, Molly. CURRENT TRAINING: Just spent the Holiday season Nov/Dec relaxing with no scheduled training. January I will start to build up my base using the MAF method (yes you all finally converted me!) and train specifically for Olympic distance. THIS YEAR'S RACES: still scheduling but plan to attend two sprints from last year to improve on time; Selection of Olympic races; Possibly end year HIM. Also have my eye on some OW swim races to compliment training. 2012 RACES: 1 x indoor sprint; 3 x outdoor sprints. WEIGHTLOSS: I was 210lbs when I started researching, now at 172lbs which seems to be my ideal weight. GOALS for 2013: Have fun! Injury prevention (weight training, yoga, warm up/down, dynamic stretching); improve nutrition; train more consistently; increase race distance to Olympic; if previous goals achieved attempt HIM.

Another bike for me.
Time for my first potentially stupid question... Is HR something I should concentrate at this early stage of getting my behind off the coach, or should I not worry about it until I'm a little bit fitter? Also I don't have a lot of funds to purchase a HR monitor, though I have found a bike computer with a built in wireless HR monitor which I could use xmas vouchers to buy, but given that its quite cheap I'm not sure how accurate it'll be. Would a approximate HR be good enough for me at the minute?

Veteran 112 Wollongong | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Climbinggonzo - 2013-01-03 1:47 AM Got in my New Year's Day race, the Polar Dash half marathon. It was absolutely brutal out, never again! Depending on who you asked it was somewhere between -4 and 0 at the start. I didn't think the cold would slow me down much, but each breath was just cold, thin air that didn't seem to be helping. And it didn't help that any evaporated sweat or breath immediately froze wherever it landed, so I looked like a skinny snowman running out there. Glad that's done. ...
That's pretty awesome, well done Andy I can't imagine running in these temperatures, I think it's cold when it gets below 10 deg C (50F)!! Clearly all you guys are tough

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Gang - the following mostly applies to those in Ernesto's Mentor group last year, but I think it can be interesting for everyone on this year's Team (I hope you all don't mind me doing this). I went back and added up all of the monthly challenges and then for fun added in all the months as if we had run a challenge from January 2012 to December 2012. Head and shoulders above everyone for the year was Gabe - I assume for that accomplishment he would get a Heavy Duty Tin Foil Medal!!! All told the group below worked out a total of approx. 184 days last year. Gabe himself had 22.5 days working out (keep that from your wife). On a 30 minute or greater workout measure - the team complete almost 4200 workouts or 11.5 per day (almost 1 per team member per day). Congrats to all for an awesome year and here's to even greater and broader success in 2013!!! I've attached the file if anyone wants to look at the underlying data.
*DISCLAIMERS - I added up many of the monthly totals myself, there may be mistakes or errors. If so I apologize. Also, I included folks above based on participation in a high majority of challenges. Swim at lunch which felt pretty good although a touch slower than I was hoping for per 100 but still felt like I had more energy after the swim than I have had in the past so I guess some improvement is happening even if I am not going faster in the water.
