I got the tuition waived since I was working as a research assistant. If I had paid normal tuition, it would have been $1500 per semester hour. This is what I was thinking, no WAY would I pay college rates without going for a degree. Find seminars and workshops to attend, then generally your employer will pay them! I like doing that! Free (to you) stuff is always good. |

Im currently 0 for 2, first got a rejection letter and second nothing but an acknowledgement of recipt. Im learning this process is going to be "fun"OK well then. On a whim Friday I sent out 2 resumes and I now have 2 emails for phone interviews. One of the phone interviews is tonight. Sarcastic font is right. It's an infuriating process, at least for me. Hopefully ya'lls experiences are more fruitful. |

If it is mostly for fun check out Coursera and Stanford online they have some great free courses.

So then it would be bad if I said I barely updated my 5 year old resume and didn't bother to send a cover letter. As I said it realy was just on a whim. The upside to my job is there are always more openings than their are people to fill them and it is not often that someone with my credetials comes on the market. The downside is that you have to go where the jobs are.

even just run-of-the-mill engineers with work experience are becoming rare. i'm not specialized whatsoever but i have a 10 year work experience and an engineering degree. that just looks good. |

A year ago to get this job. April 30th is my anniversary. I may start looking in CA soon (keep that on the DL). In my industry, I think they only interview when they really need someone then only call them in if their resume looks good. The interview is basically to sort out the weirdo factor (personality conflicts) or if they person is full of it on the resume. Other industries see to interview dozens for a single spot and can be more choosey? |

Expert 2122 Next to a big lake | Subject: RE: TAN #197: We CAN be polite, TANk u very much! So a question from the FNG job hunter. what/or is there a trick to decode a job posting? I am reading some of the local postings and my mind is reading buzzword type descriptions then trying to figure out what they said and its not technical stuff like Kate does in the lab. Other posts I read and know in my heart that I have done that job several times and can do it again but my challenge is the translation of my skills into thier vernacular. |

I would have to bumb somebody off for there to be an opening in research.

Then why brag about how you got two interviews for jobs you dont even want? That's rude, especially in response to people who are having a hard time finding a job. We get it, you guys have skills people want. That's great, but geez, dont rub people's faces in it. That's just rude. |

Yeah, I am trying to work backwards and get into a more broad field so that I can have more flexibility in the future. |

Nope, if it were to you it would be rude but if Troy thought I was being rude I will apologize to him. you on the other hand can get bent. It so happened that I was a little surprised that I got either interviews as I did such a poor job of applying for them . But hey you can make what ever interpretation makes you fell likle a big man on campus.
